Jan is a human who desperately wants a child. Tiki is a peppy, punky fairy who's not particularly good at following rules. The fairy helps Jan have a daughter, but that's only the beginning of the story. Tiki is the best godmother EVER--every year, the daughter gets an incredible magical gift. Even fifteen years later, I still remember some of them. But this extraordinary state of affairs can't continue undetected forever, and Jan and her daughter have to go to war with the fairy kingdom to More...

This was one of my favorite books when I was a lass (…and Scottish, apparently…) and I recently, for reasons I no longer recall, became obsessed with tracking it down. Thanks to the invaluable Bookman in Orange County (truly the only reason to visit the entire area), I finally got my hands on it. And it was very nearly as wonderful as I remembered. Yay!

This is an incredibly quick read, about a rebellious denim-clad fairy named Tiki, and Jan, the lonely ex-actress she befriends. The l More...

The one where a fairy befriends an injured former actress, grants her wish for a child, and gets in serious trouble with the tyrannical fairy queen.

I had to keep checking the publication date: 1989? really? because the book's attitudes toward women, childbearing, work, disability, and beauty seemed very early-sixties to me. There was waaaay too much talking about people's weight -- no, excuse me, only the weight of the female people; Jan's husband's appearance is never described. And w More...

one day Jan, a sad ex-actor, was sitting in her garden.Suddenly discovered that fairies are real, because one was speaking to her. This fairie's name was Tiki. Tiki was the type of fairy that did not obey her dictator queen, so she befriended Jan. Fairy rules clearly stated that was not to be done. Tiki soon comes to see that Jan is sad because she wants a child, and Tiki gives her one. A fairy child!!! With this new joy comes bad things too, the fairy queen!!!! This queen is here to punish tho More...

I believe this book is why I love to read. I liked reading well enough, but when I was seven someone had ordered it from the Book Order program and not claimed it. When the class and teacher left for the buses, I dawdled behind the rest of my second-grade class and stole the book. Not proud of it, but not sorry! I read this book over and over again. I still have that worn copy, and later a friend bought me a newer edition, so I could keep the original safe.

I type that I've read this More...

This book is a fantastic fantasy that will make you devour it in a sitting. It is a very low reading level book, and I would not expect more than a bit of fun from it.
<My Story>
Reading this book nearly got myself and my best friend in trouble in 5th grade. We were supposed to read books and write a review of every chapter. We were so far above the reading level of this book it was ridiculous... but we wanted to read it. So we picked it... read it in an hour or something, More...

I couldn't remember the name of this book at first. But I described it to my mom and she knew what I was talking about... so glad to have figured it out. This was a great book. Nice imagery - left me with some vivid images even though I read it as a kid. Not sure if I can give it five stars as an adult, but as a kid I really enjoyed it and have thought back to it quite a few times and always with good feelings. Good one for your kids to read!

I just found this book. I love the internet! I read this when I was a wee lass and lately have been trying to remember what it was called. All I could come up with was something about this little girl who talked with fairies and they gave her a lock of blue hair. Not much to go on but I found it. Yay! I really need to read it again, but, as a kid I loved this book.

I had to add this book because I read it when I was in Elementary School and I just found it unpacking the other day. I remember it fondly as being one of my favorites when I was younger. I loved it so so much! If you have a little girl, about 3rd-6th grade, she will love this book. I know I'll be saving my copy to read to my daughter in about 4 or 5 more years!

#2 Chapter book read with Annabelle in Kindergarten.

I had no idea what this book would be like. It was a bit strange in story- woman wants child, fairy makes a baby for her, etc. Nevertheless, it was an intriguing read. Bad guy bees working for the queen and such. A little advanced for Annabelle, but she seemed to enjoy it anyway.

This is the book that made me fall in love with books. My favorite teacher of all time, Ms. Gehm, read it aloud to my third grade class, and I promptly devoured every other book written by Lynn Reid Banks, followed by as many books in the fantasy genre as I could get my hands on. I imagined that rose fairies like Tiki inhabited not only the flowers in my backyard, but also the roses on the wallpaper in my bedroom. And I even told my neighbor that the hairs in my blond streak were actually pure g More...

I got this book from as a reward for finishing my library's summer reading probably ten or more years ago. Sometimes I still go back and read it, and now I'm eighteen. Maybe I'm just attached to it because I loved it as a little girl, but I think this book is wonderful.

Having recently read some of the Spiderwick Chronicles books and finding that they aren't something I'd want to read to my kid (if I had one), I asked myself what stories about fairies I loved as a kid, and remembered that this was my favorite for several years.

This was one of my favorite books growing up. It had me convinced for years that there really were fairies. Banks' ability to take conventional prototypes and make them into something new and imaginative but still relatable is one of her greatest talents.

Tiki, a independent-minded young fairy, goes against the Queen Fairies wishes and helps a human have a child. Tiki is an exuberant main character, and the human adults in the story have especially child like tendencies. A sweet story that will appeal to kids.

One of my favorite books as a girl. I always liked that the main character wasn't actually that smart or special other than having been created by magic. It made her seem more real than most of the main characters in books without any magic at all.

This was one of my favorite books to reread when I was a kid. Even then, it struck me as distinctly different than a lot of other books out there. It had fairies, but it wasn't remotely Disney-like--it was kind of dark and serious, actually.

thought it had a good message about fairies. Lately with all fuss about fairies, there seems to be that push about them being all just lovely, skinny, what-not. This book changes that stereotype and makes them normal. You can be ordinary and yet extraordinary at the same time if you have a good heart.

This book was one of those that I loved reading over and over as a little girl. My mom and I still quote it, as a matter of fact -- "We LOVE our Queen!!" It's a darling story and one I can't wait to share with my daughter.

Oh man, I wish I had a copy of this book. I read it multiple times as a girl, and it set the bar high for my tastes for fantasy... which is why I went off the genre for a long time, nothing measured up.

This was one of my favorites when I first read it. I was probably about 9. I didn't realize until now that it's the same author as Indian in the Cupboard. She's really a great children's author.

Loved this one growing up, reading it again and I still love it. It's another really short one. I also had no idea that it was written by the same person who wrote the Indian in the Cupboard.
