You know how people talk about books that "changed my life"? Well, I don't think books can change your life (at least not in my case), but I think they can help you change your life (in other words, you change your life, not the book -- ok, pedantic point, but still, wanted to be clear on that....)
Well, this book, along with Buzzati's "Il deserto dei Tartari" helped me change my life (actually, I have 2 non-fiction examples that did the same, albeit in different ways: L...more

So this is pretty much 'Swann In Love' without the wit, the insight, or the variety: an indifferent artist falls for a sensual young woman, projects all his creative longings onto her, and finds both his love and his ambition disappointed - fin. The characters are dull, which isn't damning in itself, but there's heron gray and there's pavement gray and this book is more the latter. Since the narrative isn't really in the voice of the characters and the detail and atmosphere are scant, to succeed...more

A minor work by Svevo, really only entrancing if you suffer from extremes of jealousy and want to read a couple hundred pages on it. While I thought Svevo perceptively traces many of the petty but obsessive internal dramas of the jealous lover, I -- to my surprise -- sometimes had the feeling that he still left large areas of emotion unexplored.

Less theatrical than Wilde, Svevo creates a book that is very similarly themed as a novel by the Englishman, only this one is more fast paced and more based around actions rather than dialougue. Certainly one of the best books I have ever read.

It was not Zeno's Conscience, alas, nor nearly so good as that book. Or not so good as good as I remember the latter being, when I read it long ago. In fact probably enough time, ten years, has passed to return to Zeno's Conscience, which would have been a smarter idea to begin with, smarter than going to this one, for that.
