Samuel. Saul. David. Goliath. Jonathan. When we think of 1 & 2 Samuel, these names and the stories that make them memorable generally come to mind. But these narratives are more than mere history.

Peter Leithart offers here a typological reading of 1 & 2 Samuel as a unified book. By giving careful attention to the book's literary structures and its patterns of types and ant...more

I've only read the first half of this book (the part dealing with 1 Samuel). Leithart is brilliant, as usual, and sometimes I cannot keep up. The biggest weakness of this book is the highly speculative nature of much of Leithart's exposition. (This is an exposition not a commentary, and as such you'll find that Leithart doesn't deal with every bit of the text.)

Dr. Leithart writes an excellent treatment of this very often neglected book(s) in the Bible. He's at his best when he's doing typology and speculating about stuff that's not on the page. I think that the application felt forced. I'm not against it; I just don't think it fit very well.

Outstanding! A commentary that reads like a novel!
Douglas Wilson
Fine stuff.

I've been using Peter Leithart's book for about a year as I've worked through 1st and 2nd Samuel. The margins of my Bible are filled with notes from the book. Peter brings out the meaning of the "details" included in 1st and 2nd Samuel while also pointing out how the stories fit in the larger plan of redemption. Highly recommended...
