I'm still not sure what I think of this book. The heroine's brother swindled huge piles of money from people and ran off, leaving his sisters to pay the price--only they haven't any money to pay it with. The older sister winds up at a party without realizing it's really an orgy, and without realizing that the romantic swain seduced her as part of his revenge against her brother. She won't do what he wants, so he decides to sell her to the highest bidder. The hero--who is "merely" a rea...more

This book follows Lessons of Desire and Rules of Seduction. Although good, I didn't think it was as good as the others. Kyle Bradwell bids on Roselyn at private country party and takes her to her cousin to save her from being raped. He then with the encouragement of Lord Easterbrook marries her to save her reputation. Her brother Tim is still a problem (he was in other books w/brother Ben whom stole from the bank they owned), but finally gets caught. He gets sent to colonies. The loves scenes w...more

This had the most ridiculous first 20 pages...then it actually blossomed into a great love story - very emotional and character-driven. I was able to completely drive the ridiculous premise for the hero and heroine's meeting out of mind and enjoy the story. I've enjoyed several of Madeline Hunter's books before and I was glad that I didn't pay too much attention to the back cover. Why settle for cardboard cut-outs when you have a writer who can actually write real characters? Read this book.

shame on Madeline for scaling back on both the steamy pages and the mystery in this latest book of hers... and shame on me for being such a shameless fan of hers anyway... ha! if you are looking to test the Madeline Hunter romance waters, please choose another book by which to form your opinion of her... this book does not represent even close to her best work.

recommends it for:
romance readers who like their heroes and heroines to "mix class"
I really like Madeline Hunter and this was a good book for her. One thing I think she does really well is create a believable story where in a class based society, two people fall in love despite their different class status. She did it with her medievals and she's sneaking it into her Regencies. She also writes darker, more emotional books, which I enjoy.

Not enamored with the set-up of this book. He's an architect in Regency England. She's a nobleman's daughter. The class difference wasn't believable for me. Didn't love this one by Madeline Hunter.

Turns out that there was so little going on in England at the time that every little misstep became a scandle of grand proportions.
But it's cool that the hero is an architect.
