Walking with God: Talk to Him. Hear from Him. Really.
"This is a series of stories of what it looks like to walk with God, over the course of about a year."
So begins a remarkable narrative of one man's journey learning to hear the voice of God. In "Walking wtih God "by John Eldredge, the details are intimate and personal. The invitation is for us all. What if we "could" hear from God . . . often

I was one who felt like I arrived to life "20 minutes late". John Eldredge talks about people like me in his original work with Brent Curtis... "The Sacred Romance". Maybe you've felt that way too. You know, like when you show up for a movie and you know there's a fair share of action and adventure, but you don't quite know exactly what the storyline is. I became a fan of Eldredge the day I first picked up that book and I've remained a fan througout the release of "The J...more
I finished reading this book a couple of weeks ago and it is still sinking in. John Eldridge is a gifted writer and it very transparent and honest in his writing. This is a breath of fresh air compared to many books that are written now days by Christian authors.
The book is basically a year's worth of prayer journal entries in which Eldridge has gone back through and added a few notes here and there. It is very honest and insightful.

God has used this book powerfully in my life of late. Author John Eldredge chronicles what is like to walk with God in the intimate moments of every day life. He makes a case that we can hear from God...hear his voice...right now...and every day...and follow him. He uses scripture to support this--that Jesus said his sheep would know his voice. This is compelling. Some of John's approach to life is a bit loose and fast for me, but the intimacy with God that he knows is definitely enticing. Some ...more
What a practical demonstration of walking daily with the Lord! This isn't a bullet-point, step-by-step guide, it's much more useful than that. Eldredge uses this book to show us what being a warrior in the kingdom looks like on a very personal level. Christians are very private about the specifics of their prayer life and seeking God's will, but Eldredge lays it all out there.

Makes you think about how much you need God in your life, always walking with you.
It took me about two months to read this, but that has nothing to say about the quality of the book. I really liked this. It's just one of those books I think is better to read slowly so you have time to really soak up what's being said. Walking with God is less "theological" and more reflective and personal, based on Eldredge's experience of doing just that for a year.

Eldredge is one of my favorite authors for a few good reasons. First is that his writing style is enjoyable, second the topics he writes are something I want to explore, and last he explores his topics in new and fresh ways.
Admitedly I know some of his writings upset the general christian population. And probably this book will too if first we take Eldredge as an authority presiding over our lives and that second we cannot take a God who could speak to us today.

first let me say that i didnt give this book a bad review because i disagree with the idea of walking with God or being able to listen to and talk with God. there are other things that really disappointed me with this book.
but first let me point out the positives:
it's john eldredge. that, in itself, is good thing. i think, for the most part, he's very easy to read and understand. also, he explains his experience with hearing God and explains the context in the stories that he...more

This deserves a fuller review than I have time to give it tonight. I really liked it. It was timely for me. I need to read it again someday, as I nearly always feel after reading an Eldredge book for the first time. He covers so many different big concepts here, and the way in which they're expounded is really great. But it leaves you wanting to consider further, as the pace keeps moving.

An excellent tool to help you in drawing near to God and resting in Him. The author willingly opened his heart and life by sharing many deep and personal experiences and convictions in order to help readers understand his "conversational" intimate relationship with Christ. The author puts the concept of "never ceasing prayer" to practice in his daily walk with Christ and guides you along with him, within a years time. I followed along with his online video chapter excerpts. I...more
I read this book as part of a small group Bible study. We wanted to increase/improve our prayers. This book and the group I was with definitely opened my eyes to many things about the Christian faith I hadn't really been aware of. There were times that I struggled to continue reading. Some of Eldredge's examples seemed a bit off the wall to me, but really got me to think more critically about everything I read.
This was one of those books that I needed to read...slowly. It took me about three months because I took it s-l-o-w and really applied it to my life. It has been so helpful. I don't think it would impact everyone the way it impacted me, but it could be one of those books that hits you at just the right time. It's almost a primer for what it means to have intimacy with God. It's a way of inviting Him (again) back into your life and inner workings. Real healing happened for me and I am still...more
WOW. I actually listened to it on tape - several times. It's an owner. Opened my eyes and perception of what more is available in my relationship with God than what I've been practicing these last 20 year. Recently bought the DVD group discussion guide to assist in developing the themes he discusses into my everyday life. Looking forward to getting a group together
The author has a relaxed, easy-going style that makes reading this book very enjoyable. I have learned some things even though I'm not very far into the book. One of the most important is that God was to have a very involved, conversational relationship with us. I'm still in the process of discovering how that is built, but John Eldredge seems to be on a mission to share that with us.
This book gave me a new perspective. I needed something, I really did. In the most simple and profound way, I was guided to a place where I should have been a long time ago. I just wish it wouldn't end... but then again, maybe I'll just read it again... :)

In short, Eldredge does have some wonderful insight into spiritual warfare and enhancing your personal relationship with God. Some of his insights, albeit, are very primitive and basic. If you are looking to deepen your relationship with God, this book can take you there.
I wasn't expecting to really learn much from this book (terrible attitude, huh?) but I really enjoyed his concrete descriptions and "how-to". I immediately started reading it a second time! It has given me a lot to think about, and to talk to God about! :)
Walking with God is an incredible account of what it looks like to truly walk with God and to let him into the deepest places in our hearts. John Eldredge's vulnerability takes you down a path of finding deeper more meaningful relationship with God in our everyday life and learning how to offer our hearts fully and completely to God for healing. God speaks through him in an amazing way!
I find John Eldredge's writing so helpful - he has a "feet on the ground" quality, whilst aspiring to spiritual heights. He doesn't just accept the status quo or the mundane. Particuarly liked his section on prayer in the evening.
This book helped to really get the ease of conversing & expecting to hear from Him moment by moment. John's easy & transparent style made talking with my Papa so much less formal & stilted. Like David, Like Job at times...
The author journeys through a year of his life and his relationship with God. He is very open and honest with his words, revealing times of joy, sadness , frustration, and spiritual warfare.
Because it's more of a journal than a traditional non-fiction work, it's somewhat random in nature. While not his best work, it's still a John Eldredge gem.

I read this book on a two week trip to Costa Rica and I was really encouraged to have a closer, more intimate and meaningful relationship with God. Recommended for those who have lost the fire in their spiritual lives

Truly the best down to earth real live understanding of walking with GOD. I love how John is so honest about the walking, talking, and the sharing of his thoughts as he shares how he heard God walk in his life.
Made me see my relationship with God in a new way... reminded me that God really cares about the nitty gritty of my life. I try to walk this way... talking with God constantly, asking him things... but it's hard.
I liked the way this book is written in short entries so you can take your time and really soak it in. This book helped me learn to listen better to God's voice and invite Him into the details of my life.
A fascinating look at a man who takes his relationship with his Savior quite literally. Odd in parts, but that's probably because it was outside the realm of my comfort level, which is a good thing I think.
I have to say this book was a welcome and needed change of pace. The author uses examples from his own life as a way to make a guide to developing a conversational relationship with God. The (or one of the) overarching themes of the book is that in order to have a life in which we walk with God we must walk and talk with Him in the everyday and little things because those are the things that make up our lives. Although I agree with the majority of what he has to say I have a tendency to disagree...more
Some of the content of this book is questionable to me and really lead me down some thought paths that have caused me to struggle. But, things happen as they should.
I have read this before and got a lot out of it in terms of practicing hearing God. Listening to it on cd recently the heart of the book resonated with me even more!

Listening to this book on audio- it's really good, by the same author of "Wild at Heart", and "Captivating".
Just finished this book- it had a lot of good stuff in it, but some not so good, and doctrinally "odd". However, I did enjoy it and was able to weed out the other stuff. Wouldn't recommend it though.

John Eldredge is an author (you probably figured that out), a counselor, and teacher. He is also president of Ransomed Heart, a ministry devoted to helping people discover the heart of God, recover their own heart in his love, and learn to live in his Kingdom. John grew up in the suburbs of Los Angeles (which he hated), and spent his boyhood summers on his grandfather’s cattle ranch in eastern Ore...more
