Savvy is another book that had me at hello. "When my brother Fish turned thirteen, we moved to the deepest part of inland because of the hurricane and, of course, the fact that he'd caused it." Isn't that a great first sentence? Puzzling enough to hook you? I think so. A few pages later we read, "Monday through Wednesday, we called our thin stretch of land Kansaska. Savvy, written by newcomer Ingrid Law and scheduled to be published this May, was one of those great books that I just couldn't put down from start to finish. It is definitely a quick read, held my attention the entire time, and had me rooting for every single character involved in the plot, of which there are quite a few!

Mississippi Beaumont is awaiting her 13th birthday. That's the birthday when the savvy comes for her family. Mibs can't wait to figure out her savvy. Her brother Rocket has electricity, and her brother Fish has a powerful weather savvy.

Mibs Beaumont is turning 13 in just two days and when she does her life will change forever. Not just because she will be a teenager with all the drama and angst that entails, but because the Beaumont's are different - whenever someone in their family turns 13 their savvy hits and there's been some whoppers: 19 year old Rocket controls electricity and 14 year old Fish controls the weather - well, sort of. I liked just about everything about Savvy. Interesting characters--Mibs, Fish, Lester, Lill, Will Junior, Bobbi, all well-developed. I really enjoyed getting to know these characters. I had high hopes for Lester, smiled when Lill brought out the best in him, and worried when trouble met the big pink bus.
While the story concept is intriguing, it's Ingrid Law's writing that made the story shine. She has a wonderful savvy for words, if you will. Mib's description of her father, for insta...more

It was SUCH a fun concept, but for some reason, I found this book dissatisfying.

Savvy is about a very special family. Each Beaumont wakes up on his or her 13th birthday with a magic power, or a “savvy.” When Mibs’ poppa is seriously hurt in an accident just days before her 13th birthday, she is sure her savvy will be the power to wake him up. This magical children's novel reminded me a bit of Joseph Helgerson's "Horns and Wrinkles" with a hefty dose of Nina Kiriki Hoffman thrown in.

I couldn't put Savvy down until I was finished! It was fun and touching with great characters and a clever premise. When a Beaumont kid turns 13, they get their "savvy." Mib's older brothers have powerful savvys: one can make storms and the other makes electricity. What will Mib's savvy be? There's a sweetness and an old-time storytelling feel to this book that I enjoyed. Although at times, the "voice" could be a little too cloying. But I like the mix of characters--Mibs and her earnestness, Bobbi, Will Junior, etc. I feel like we got a good sense of Mama and Poppa. Even Lester, Lill, and the Preacher's wife. But I feel like we could have gotten more on Samson (why was he just so darn quiet?), Fish (he seemed to be brooding the whole time. He was always on the outside of ...more
