A book to give you nightmares. The science fiction/horror-noir style of this tale reminds me of Murakami. But unlike Murakami, Suzuki leans more toward shock and the grotesque.
One of the many premises of the tale is that two "realities" exist simultaneously. There is the real world and "the loop." Technology allows for the inhabitants of the real world to view the inhabitants of the loop, through what seems like virtual reality sets. The dynamic between the two w...more

Birthday is a book that contrasts the generic label of “horror” usually associated with the writer of the Ring series, Koji Suzuki. While Birthday does carry out some of the “horror” associated with his novels, the book mostly carries with itself a deep and emotional aspect of relationships, whether it be friendship or intimacy. The book sprawls about the page tales of loss and rejoice; the crooked screams of dying friendship as well echoed before every chapter. The first of these tales is told ...more
German edition - German review:
"Birthday - The Ring 0" enthält drei Kurzgeschichten bzw.

Last night I finished Birthday by Koji Suzuki, the latest (last? I doubt it) book in his Ring/ Spiral/ Loop cycle. If the only thing you know about Ring is the American film adaptation--or even the Japanese film or manga--you are doing yourself a disservice. Do you remember how cool Michael Crichton was when you were in middle school? How you read and reread Jurassic Park and Sphere? Well, reading Suzuki's books as an adult recalls that feeling.

Der Kreis schliesst sich. Das letzte Buch hat einen kleinen "Aha-Effekt" bei mir ausgelöst. Mehr auch nicht.
Un bon complément à la trilogie.
I finished it within a few hours. Truly a moving piece that captured my interest at every second. It still gave me chills which I loved. I really love this series and I'm almost sad to see it end.
I've started to read it. It has three different stories in it and I have completed one of the three.
OK I guess I posted the above four years ago.
I have finished the book. From what I remember I liked it. It is three stories from the Ring universe. It was good. One deals with the birth of Sadako, the others deal with things I can't remember. I wouldn't read this without reading the others as this kind of plays off of them.

This was a nice rap up of the last few plot lines from the end of the first novel Loop. It was a interesting look into the lives of three of the women of the Ring series and what happened to them. It was also nice to see something of Sadako before she became the monster that almost destroys two whole worlds
A fill-in-the-gaps book, some of it quite surprising, one of the tales being the inspiration for ring o birthday, the film, very good
A nice coda to the Ring trilogy
More of putting to writing what I've already inferred, based on putting together the stories, from the previous books.

In addition to being considered "the Japanese Stephen King", Suzuki is also a respected writer on the subject of fatherhood in his native Japan. Several of his works have been adapted into movies, including "Ring" and the short story "Dark Water" from the collection of the same name, as well as a Manga series based on "Ring".
