Having not read any of this kind of "cozy mystery" type books before I wasn't sure what to expect. The result was an easy to read, unchallenging, straightforward mystery story. You won't find anything earth shattering in this book but at the same time it is perfectly readable on a rainy afternoon with a cuppa.

Back in June I decided to read 100 books by Labor Day, a modest goal I have shattered to bits.
A large percentage of these titles have been by M.C. Beaton, who has two series detectives (Hamish Macbeth and Agatha Raisin) and a few stand-alones.
I really enjoy the Macbeths, though they are formulaic. Agatha Raisin is a little harder to get into; she's kind of a jerk.

For fans of "cozy" little English village mysteries. My first book by this author. An easy and enjoyable read for a "cozy" rainy afternoon. The characters are sketchily drawn. However, there was just enough development to make me want to read further to see how they fare and how they solve the mystery. The story moves steadily along.
I may have to read more of M.C. Beaton's other series to get a feel for English Village Mysteries....called "cozies". More...

I am a huge fan of M.C. Beaton in general because of the way she writes. She renders clinical, objective descriptions of a character, but in the process of making them main characters, she gives you enough of their motivations that they start to grow on you.
This book starts off with you immediately pitying the main character, and the adventure that he gets into is very interesting. You won't be able to guess who the real culprit is. M.C. Beaton's always an enjoyable read.

Another re-read, but I wanted to make sure (that I had read it, that I had remembered it was slightly different, that I would give it away). Sadly I might keep it. It's typical Beaton, with the (OMG lank-haired! overweight!) woman constantly hoping and being disappointed, but here it's married with her former genre, the romance, so she gets contact lenses and a haircut, loses weight and they get together. The "mystery" is also just the usual talking-with-the-same-people-about-nothing.

A nice little standalone from the author of the Hamish Macbeth series (which I love) and the Agatha Raisen series (not so much). A soially awkward couple meet up, try to solve the mysteries of their past, finally see their self worth, and fall in love. Not great literature, but a fun read nonetheless and a perfect opportunity to get a taste of the prolific MC Beaton before committing to her backlists.

I was pleasantly surprised by this "cozy" mystery! It was fun, moved right along, & was a good mystery. I'm an insatiable Anglophile so I love anything Agatha-Christie-esque. This is modern-day so it didn't hold a candle to Dame Agatha in that particular, but was still fun to read. This is the first M. C. Beaton I've read. I'll seek out this author's other novels.

I really enjoyed this book and liked reading something a little bit different by M.C. Beaton.
I liked the mystery element to this book and also the love story that was underlying in the book.
This was a nice easy read and I would recommend it to fans of M.C Beaton as well as those who like a bit of light reading.

Up to page 48 and will finish the book because it is a fast read, BUT...I think the writer has no vision and speeds through her writing in a way that makes me believe she is tell the story to a child who has a short attention span.
It may make a great play though.
stay tuned...

I enjoy MC Beaton (especially both the Hamish MacBeth and Agatha Raisin series) so liked this book, too. The main characters are painted well enough for one to cheer both for and against them, and feel how their lifelong disappointments color their views of the world.

I liked this much better than the Hamish MacBeth or Agatha Raisin books. The characters were much more pleasant and likeable - though I never did really warm up to the whiny Fell and wished that Maggie, who is a wonderful character, could find someone worthy of her.

I continue to enjoy everything by M.C. Beaton. Her characters are real and likeable and her plots are catching. I also enjoy her humor. This was the first of her mysteries that Ive read and what I liked best is that it isn't scary.

This book was a really quick read. I took it for a long weekend out of town, and finished it before the flight home. However, it was not particularly captivating. Nice little tale, but I probably won't rush out to find this author again.

I really enjoyed this book - Having to come to M.C.Beaton via the Agatha Raisin books I am enjoying this author more and more. This is a lovely read with believeable characters that you begin to geniunely care about. Would recommend this to anyone

I really appreciated this book. It reminded me of those movies when you know what the character is thinking, and you want to yell at the screen "Just say it! Tell her!!!" The mystery was as a mystery should be winding and unfolding with a few twists and turns- all over it was a quick fun read!

I have really missed M. C. Beaton's books since I finished her two series, Agatha Raisin and Hamish Macbeth. This is a stand alone and was very good. I am waiting for her new release due out this year.

Not up to Beaton's usual standards. The plot was ok but I found the main characters a bit dull, and all of them a bit flat. Definitely not as entertaining as Hamish Macbeth or even Agatha Raisin.

Not a very dramatic murder mystery. Set in a small town, a crime committed years ago and solved by the main protagonist and his girlfriend. Very gentle and an easy read.

This was hard to put down. I loved the range of emotions the main characters felt as their relationship changed. All around good book!

I've read almost every book that MC Beaton has written. This was by far my favorite. It is not part of any of her series.

I read this book in a day. Another fun, light mystery form M.C. Beaton. Little violence, no gore, just a fun mystery.

It started out as a solid, depressing 2 but I guess it got better. I can't figure Beaton out.

Some good bits. Predictable. Major developments which would take years happen in hours, so I said, "Yeah, right" and snorted in disbelief too many times.

Not as jolly as Agatha Raisin but entertaining when I had other heavier books to read.

A fun and cute story by the author who brought us Hamish MacBeth and Agatha Raisin.

Quick read. Enjoyed the characters, but not as much as in the Hamish stories.

It's fun, simple and an easy read. Great book to have around the pool or on the plane.
