[close] In August 1995, "Mr de Souza from Goa", his considerable body wrapped in a blanket, his jet black hair flowing gently in the breeze, and his eyes hidden by huge, dark, stylish sun glasses, arrived in Nagaland. With his diminutive and highly pregant travel companion, he had slipped past various Indian checkpoints and intelligence setups, and a fantastic journey into hidden Burma began. The book that resulted from this journey has become a classic on recent Burmese history. Bertil and Hseng Noung Lintner spent one and a half years travelling through northern and eastern Burma from 1985 to 1987. Lintner describes with care and deep insight the struggle by the Kachin and Shan ethnic groups against Burmese army rule, and records the decline and fall of the CPB--the Communist Party of Burma. During their 2,275 kilometre trek, at times in great danger, they wrote the history of a 40-year forgotten war, a history which would otherwise never have been committed to paper in such rich detail.
