The consensus between my daughter and I is that this is our favorite of the Ark stories (so far) as compared to Jerry Pinkney's Noah's Ark and Jan Brett's On Noah's Ark as well as the versions contained within Tomie DePaola's Book of Bible Stories and The Bible Story. I think what makes this story stand out are a) the illustrations by Santore which are beautifully photo-realistic and b) the story of the little mouse stowaway which is bound to engage and delight most children.

Noah obeyed the Lord and chose two of every animal but Noah overlooked Little Archbar the mouse, so he became a stowaway on the great big ark. Archbar rode the ark for 40 days and 40 nights, anxiously awaited for the dove to return and saw the glorious rainbow. When Noah told the animals to "go forth and prosper", Archbar was happy to do so. The elegant illustrations capture the beauty of this inspiring story of obedience and blessings.

The illustrations are the attraction of this gentle retelling of the story of the Flood. Religion and destruction are downplayed. I didn't think Ackmed the mouse (or whatever his name was) was really necessary, but it was still a pleasant book to look at.
