Another good book in the series, with lots of depth, in my opinion. There's a police investigation, along with politics and KGB meddling in the background, and the usual rich character interactions along with a mix of Russian philosophy. In other words, a typical Inspector Rostnikov story.

I think it may take a little work getting used to this series. This one was easier for me to follow than the first one; I think I knew more what to watch out for, and I got to know the characters better.

I had actually read another book in this series several years ago. Despite the lag, coming back to Porfiry Rostnikov and his little band of misfit Moscow policemen felt like catching up with an old friend.
It's an easy read ... pretty standard stuff in the police procedural / thriller genre, featuring an odd but likable cast of characters.

Interesting story, moves along well, I had to do some map reading so I could follow some of the movements. Should read these books in series order. Excellent reading.

I really like all the Rostnikov novels - Porfiry Rostnikov is a weightlifting detective in present-day Moscow. I think these are the best of Kaminsky's works.

“It was a typical Soviet ploy. People were forever quoting Lenin, much of the time with a great deal of creativity, knowing that even scholars had a difficult time identifying quotations from the mass of Lenin’s writing and speeches. Rostnikov” 0 likes
