Miss Jaster's Garden
Hedgie the hedgehog lives in a little corner of Miss Jaster's garden. But one morning nearsighted Miss Jaster mistakenly plants some seeds on Hedgie, who is asleep in the flowerbed. Completely delightful! This story is very funny and sweet, with a few moments of angst, and a very happy end, and beginning too. There’s even a map (I do love maps!) of the garden & house & property by the sea, which also shows on the map. Just lovely. Wonderful illustrations. This author/illustrator also illustrated one of my favorite childhood books: Half Magic. Unlike some Goodreads friends and general members, I’d never given much thought to hedgehogs, but I fell in love with Hedgie....more
Another book that I adored as a child. In fact, this is one of those unusual books that one finds has someone stuck in one's subconscious. I lost my original copy years ago--but found a reissue. Re-reading the story, I was just as delighted by the illustrations as I was when young: they are wonderful. It's the imagery that stuck most strongly with me. The story was essentially remembered--but the images of a dancing, delighted hedgehog stole the show. The story is very sweet and gentle. I think...more
This is a sweet, but very silly tale about a hedgehog who becomes a flowerhog. He's not truly a pet, but he lives in Miss Jaster's yard and when she sees him, she brings him a saucer of milk. She also plays the piano for him.
When he accidently gets "planted" with flowers, the silliness ensues. Nice, old fashioned illustrations and a beautiful depiction of the British seaside, complete with the local village constable. It's a fun story to read aloud, but is perhaps a bit long for younger childre...more

I love this book and still have a copy from when I was little. I cannot find it for sale new, but can hopefully find it at a library. Miss Jaster accidentally plants some seeds on the hedgehog;s back and the plants slowly grow. The poor hedgehog lumbers around with all the extra weight until Miss Jaster notices. She cares for him and a is very sweet woman. This book can be used to discuss responsibility toward nature, caring and empathy, animals, plants, and gardens.

hedghogs and flowers!? I don't need to hear anything more ;-)
This is a bizarre little tale of a hedgehog that lives in a woman's garden and accidentally gets planted with flowers. The illustrations aren't really my favorite but they are pretty and look like watercolor. the book is text-heavy and probably wouldn't work for story-time but would be a good independent read or display/booklist book.
