This was a fun book, it was like paranormal chic-lit in a way. Just because the funny way it was written and it didn't take everything so serious and tried to explain that it's so real.A reason why I ended up choosing this cover for my review cos it more says fun than the other one that says paranormal.

I do expect a smile on my face when the main character is a graduate from F.U. Lol, yes. It might not have been laughing out loud. Milagro is a spicy Latina that got into a great uni and felt a bit out of place there with all those blonde wasps. One of her secret weapons are her boobs, they are great now and again when you are late with rent and need some sympathy. She is a writer who writes about zombies and gore, and she sure does not believe in anything paranormal. But then she meets a guy who sweeps her off her feet, there is some kissing involved and soon she is going crazy from hearing rats in the walls and gets really ill. In sweeps attractive guy and takes her away to a country estate, but there is also the matter of her ex who wants to stake her.

Oswald, well I liked him, I disliked him, I liked, and yes then I disliked him in the end. He was a roller coaster, and the writer made me feel like Milagro. Could she like and trust him or? There were others I liked instead, I did keep changing my mind and some things just worked out for the best in the end.

As for side character, slimy creep wasp Ex, a good evil person who I wanted to kick in the ass. Edna, oh I loved her. Oswalds grandmother who has a lot of class, and dislikes Milagro, or perhaps just really likes her. And more, who I sure want to know more about later on.

Are they vampires or not is the question here, and I did wonder. It's a different sort of vampire tale, some bites yes, but so much else too. Culture and social classes clash when Milagro shows up, and with her bantering with Edna, there we got the smiles. Romance, yes, and more is to come.

A fun vampire tale with a funny twist. I will keep an eye out for book 2 and 3 because I do want to know what will happen, and if there is that HEA we all love.

Man... let me tell you! this book had me laughing the whole way thru! But be aware, because this is very cynic/sarcastic kind of humor..so it might not be everyone`s cup of tea.

The story itself is quite creative. it has the vampire theme in it, but it cleverly throws the cliches out the window!

A thoroughly enjoyable chick-lit vampire story with a sharp, witty and voluptuous Latina for a heroine. A quick but juicy kiss with a handsome stranger ends suddenly as they trip and tumble to the floor, splitting their lips and inadvertently exchanging a few drops of blood. Published in 2006, it's the first in a series, and I can't believe it's taken me this long to read my first Marta Acosta book. Written in a chatty, witty, first-person narrative, Happy Hour at Casa Dracula is a refreshingly different take on vampires. In this book the main vampire characters consider themselves to be afflicted with a rare genetic disorder, and while they do not consider themselves to be vampires, they do enjoy drinking carefully harvested animal blood. After Milagro is bitten by hunky Oswald during some hotel room nookie, she seems to have contracted the disorder (wait, isn't it genetic, not viral? this is one of those moments the reader just has to ignore). Milagro is an interesting character. She is smart, verbose, well-read, sexy and somewhat lazy. She makes regular references to classic authors and uses some really fun, multi-syllabic vocabulary (which I love, dork that I am). But for all her talk, she remained a pretty paper-thin character. She relates many stories that should create a deeper sense of character - her mother Regina's coldness, her own hand-to-mouth existence, being a Latina graduate of a WASPy elite univeristy, her spotty employment, her eclectic circle of friends. But while these are interesting and colorful, they remain largely anecdotal, failing to create a more complex picture of Milagro. Consequently, I am already forgetting details about the story. I finished reading it a couple of hours ago and the details are fading fast - it's not one of those books that create a strong impression and stays with you for days afterward. But that's not necessarily a negative. I like books that are a fun break from my reality, and this book gave me that escape. The pace is fast, the humor is steady and there's enough going on in the story that I zipped through the book quickly and enjoyed it while reading. I would like to read the rest of the series.

*As a side note, this is one of those rare romance novels that has no explicit sex. The author neatly avoids the details, while still writing a couple of steamy scenes.

The first 50 pages of HAPPY HOUR AT CASA DRACULA were fantastic, wonderful, off-the-charts. Full of witty little literary references, really funny, featuring a smart Latina heroine - Miraglo de los Santos - who leads a charmingly ramshackle life while she tries to find some direction for herself now that college is over. I read the first few chapters and thought, "Wow! I am so sorry I didn't pick this book up the second it was released!"

I read the first few chapters and thought, "Wow! I am so sorry I didn't pick this book up the second it was released!"

And then...well, and then. A series of twists and turns deposit Miraglo at Casa Dracula. All the vampires at CASA DRACULA call vampirism a "condition" and they never, ever suck blood. Instead, they have a groundskeeper who bleeds farm livestock and bottles the blood for the vamps, who drink responsibly, in small quantities, from glasses. Aside from one shady character who pops in for a visit, nobody seems at all interested in drinking human blood.

I just don't get vampire novels about genteel, civilized vampires who don't drink blood from the vein. Change out those bottles of blood for wine, and the vamps of Casa Dracula would be regular old humans. Which means that the plot boils down to shenanigans at the country house, like a Regency romance - who is sleeping with who, and who's going to catch who first, who is a friend and who is a foe.

Meanwhile, Acosta abandons all the fun literary references and the characters become increasingly one-dimensional. In the beginning, Miraglo was a bodacious Latina who had graduated from a top-notch school with a degree in English - she was a sort of scatterbrained, intellectual sex-bomb. But the 'smart' aspects of her character dim, and that just leaves...sexy and scatterbrained, a much less interesting combo. The villains grow more cartoonishly dastardly, the good guys are less ambiguous in their treatment of Miraglo, her college friends are neatly divided into true and false.

The first few chapters had my expectations so high that I could only be disappointed by the rest. Acosta is clearly an author who could have written a great book - but didn't.(less)

This book was fabulous. Absolutely fabulous. I have been following Marta Acosta’s blog for quite a while, but for some reason kept putting off buying her books. Let me be the first to say, “Bad Jess! BAD! No cookies for you!”

Well, I have seen the error of my ways. HAPPY HOUR AT CASA DRACULA was light, funny, and fabulous. Marta has given a fresh take on the vampire trope (but don’t call them vampires, they hate that) which had me at turns giggling and gasping over the plotting, the bitchery, and the fantabulosity that have her characters leaping off the page.

Our heroine, Milagro De Los Santos, isn’t having a good time. The story opens with this wonderful woman with a degree from a Fancy University and a crappy job history at a launch party for her ex’s new book. Considering she desperately wants her own novel to be published, what’s the harm in going to a party where there are sure to be editors and agents in attendance? As long as she steers clear of Sebastian Beckett-Witherspoon, everything should be fine. Right? …Right?

Yeah. Train wreck ahoy.

At the party she exchanges barbed remarks with said ex. Soon thereafter, she meets the deliciously mysterious Oswald, and then leaves the party to go to his hotel room to discuss literature.

Ahem.

Said discussion results in a rather violent lip-lock, which causes a bit of blood to be exchanged between the two. Then Sebastian shows up (*cough* COCKBLOCK *cough*) and Milagro decides it is in her best interests to GTFO. She runs home and, over the next few days, becomes terribly ill. She can’t keep food down. Once she finally gets some energy back, the first thing she does is runs to the grocery store, where nothing but the blood in the packages of ground beef looks appetizing. You can imagine how traumatizing this is for her.

I won’t go into much detail over what happens next, but she does cross paths with Oswald again, and soon finds herself seeking shelter from some wacked out psychos on his family’s estate. That’s when she learns about her new “condition” and why her diet needs to drastically change, as well as some of the new enemies she’s acquired by becoming one of denizens of Casa Dracula.

This story was just hilarious and fun and exactly what I needed at the time I read it. Fans of Mary Janice Davidson’s Queen Betsy series should adore this story. I, for one, am very much looking forward to delving into the rest of Milagro’s adventures. Kudos to Ms. Acosta for writing such a riotous and entertaining story!(less)

This was an absolute delight. A very easy read, light-weight, but definitely not frivolous. There were layers of depth, to the story and to the characters, all wrapped up in an appealing, funny narrative. Not your usual vampire tale. This one is witty and funny, with a heroine you can't help but love.

I enjoyed this author's style, and the story had a different slant from the usual dark gothic vampire books. A nice little break from serious reading. I look forward to reading the next installment of hip, sexy, and oh so vulnerable Milagro's adventures with the 'family'.

Okay, the first chapter or two was a lot of yapping, but once you got past that part...all the excitement finally begins. Definitely a funny book, with just enough spice to keep it hot. The narrator is a voluptuous and spunky Latina whose sense of humor is fun and flirty without being foul. And despite her being so different from me, I really enjoyed being inside her head -- a rarity among first-person narratives.

Here's the thing: I read the third book in this series first, not knowing it was part of a series. It was good enough that I immediately got the first and second books in the series. But while this book -- the first -- was just as witty as the third, a lot of the allure disappeared in knowing that everything that's leading towards a happy ending here becomes totally ruined by the end of the third book. Maybe my expectations were too high as lots of people told me it was both funny and fun, but I found it entertaining at best. I had read this book when it first came out but recently won a signed copy and re-read it. I am so glad I did, I thoughly enjoyed the book. The first half of this story reads like great chick-lit. The main character, Milagro, has a wonderful sarcastic wit. It's been done before but it's still pretty entertaining. There are many things I appreciate about this novel. Normally I don't like these flirty, light romantic reads because the contents usually don't appeal to me (characters, plots). However, I really enjoyed reading Happy Hour. We experience the story through the protagonist, Milago, and boy, is she ever a character! She's funny, smart and even has some flaws. Milagro was a believable and well drawn character I was able to connect to throughout the story. She falls for the engaged Oswald and spends most of the book reasoning with her feelings while also being pursued by a secret organization. I wish there was more action from her instead of being largely passive but I was dazzled enough by her clever narration that this was a minor issue.

Of course, this is all due to Acosta's clever and fun writing. I was able to zip through this in two days (which is fast for me) and I had a smile on my face pretty much the whole time. I would call this book largely a comedy and it had me laughing out loud many times. I also enjoyed Acosta's take on vampires which is unique yet still yields the same effect vampires have in romance novels.

My issues with the book lay with certain character and plot elements that remained a minor annoyance throughout my time reading. For example, I was a bit frustrated about how rudely Edna would treat Milagro for seemingly no good reason. It felt very unrealistic and over dramatic. Sometimes it was how some plot points were skipped over, like what happened between Winnie and Sam. I just wanted more out of it.

Overall I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to read a highly fun, energetic paranormal romance, especially if they want a different take on vampires. The series continues with Midnight Brunch, which I already have and look forward to reading.(less)

I am so grateful to Blouedd for recommending this one in her year end post. This fell under the best damn vampire books category, and I had seen this series around before, but I had a gift card burning my wallet, took a chance and fell for Amazons 3 for 1 promotion on this book and am so glad I took a chance on it.
