The Eyewitness Companions series from DK Publishing is a treasure. The subject of this entry in the series is "Herbal Remedies." I must confess that I am skeptical about extreme claims for herbal remedies; extremism here, in my view, becomes quackery. However, it is also clear that some herbs do, indeed, have value as remedies.

I didn't read this straight through, but I've read chunks of it and used the reference sections several times. I like how complete it is as a reference, giving ratings for each herb on safety, amount of research backing it up, etc, and also listing the best forms for taking each herb. Plus the colorful photos are great so you can see what each one looks like.

Recommends it for: herbal enthusiast, gardeners,
I'm a lover of any type of Eyewitness Companion! I purchased the Herbal Remedies one after taking an herb class with a master herbalist and I'm glad I did. I own many reference books on herbs but find this one to be the most extensive, informative and user friendly. I'd say a must have if you have an interest in herbs and herbal remedies.

Practical, concise guide of most popular herbal plants. Organized by common plant name, but also indexed by Latin binomial for easy location of plants. Information is short, and well organized with brief plant description, medicinal uses/current research, and recommended usage. The photos are good, with details to make plant identification easier.
