First he tripped her...made her spill her soup all over herself. Now she's being stalked by a murderous werewolf! And it's all his fault!!

As soon as he smelled her, he had to have her. Now his enemy is targeting her...and she's scared of the dark, much less werewolves.

Elements of humor, hot passion, and a good lead-in to the upcoming 2nd book in Byrd's series.

Torrance(torry) & MAson- main charcters

Mason and Jeremy go into a cofee shop- Jeremy is Masons bff best friend- and suddenly Mason's all sniffing around and getting aroused...uh-oh, which means he's found his mate that he never thought existed...and he can't believe it came in a woman with glasses and a delicious body. Not his type, but he feels shes more than his type that he deserves. When Mason trips Torry so that she can notice him, in the end she ends up running away from him...all the way to her work...then all the way home......to get attacked! and not by a human...but a werewolf?!!?!?!?
later on she finds out that she is someone important to mason, and that mason's enemy is the were wolf that attacked her, and he will come back to attack her soon if she doesn't have protection. So Torry decides to go with Mason and Jeremy for protection that is offered by, of course, the two half-weres.

Mason had a bad childhood, one that lead to him finding out that his brother commited suicide, because his brother dean couldn't live without his mate and since his mate died, dean killed himself to end the agony and so that he wouldn't turn rogue.From that day on Mason swore never to let himself be in a situation like that, never to bond fully with his mate-if he found her-which he has//tsk//tsk//tskkk///.
but in the end simmonn is defeated and mason marries and bonds to Torrance.
Jeremy has also been picked from the straw to join back to his pack and work from within with a female named jillian to do tasks and find badguys within.

Mason and his partner walk into a crowed coffee house and all he can scent is a woman - not just any woman but his true mate, a woman designed for him. Unable to control himself fully he needs her, wants her and just can't let her walk out of his life without a word, so he does the unthinkable and takes the woman down.

Now this is slightly tricky, see Torrance has made up her mind about men, especially good looking men like this stranger, she won't turn into her mother and change boyfriends like shirts no matter how hot the shirt. She's determined to only accept the one man, her dream guy, who'll love her unconditionally and forever, one nightstand are out of the question.

It turns out bad guy is also little bit mental, telling her she has to follow him right away and get the hell out of dodge, thanks to the bustling coffee house she manages to escape, but she isn't out of the woods yet, before she knows she's being attacked by a sadistic, bent on eating humans, werewolf - and it turns out the coffee house nutjob hottie ain't quite so insane after all, more like a werewolf himself. And she's stuck between a war of sides.

Mason, wanting nothing more than Tory follows her tries to get her to see reason - that he is what she needs to survive, also he's quite set on getting her to bed as well, but that's all, he's not going to turn soft just because he's found his mate, he's not built for love, but he sure wants her - so imagine the fun that comes from her saying no. The uneasy couple has to come to terms in what exactly is their relationship and what do they want and what can they eventually have... does love make you weaker or stronger?

This book was so much fun to read, I was up late at night cause it just had such a fun story to read, action and blooming attraction and Mason trying to keep a lid on his emotions towards Tory, and Tory trying to fight getting too intimate with a werewolf for the protection of her heart.

This book just came out in Finland, and apparently has two more books coming out, one of the today, so yes I'll be picking that one up as well. ;) Great fun read, easy to finish in 24 hours!

This shifter romance in particular stands out from some in recent memory. The author takes time to not only flesh out the main characters but provide entertaining secondary characters and an interesting background for the wold of the werewolf.

I'm not a fan of series publications, nor this author. Not even sure why I bought it, but now I'm glad I did. This is the best series type book I have read in years, and to date my favorite read from Ms. Byrd.

Werewolf romance, werewolf politics & infighting, and steamy romance. Good stuff, and an excellent start for this series.

"Last Wolf Standing" was a well written paranormal romance, however, the plot was not very original and has been told many times before. Here is the story in a nutshell:
-Boy bumps into girl. "He's so gorgeous/ She's so beautiful"
-Boy is a werewolf and has found his mate. She thinks he us crazy.
-Girl runs from boy. Boy chases.
-Boy's enemy attacks girl and he rescues her.
-Boy take girl to his home. They fall in love.
-Together they overcome the odds and defeats their enemy.

I picked this up at the library for a quarter, and was pleasantly surprised by the story of Torrance and Mason! I like this author's take on the were-pack hierarchy, and the concept of the Bloodrunners. I liked the Alpha Male hero, even if his stubborness made me want to strangle him. I really enjoyed the heroine, who finds that she has more strength and courage than she ever believed she would. I appreciate her "geekiness" too - it's totally relatable! Firstly I have to say I've read a fair few Harlequins in my time and most of them I just read, enjoy and forget - the fictional equivalent of a cheap bar of milk chocolate. Some others have been downright awful. But I've not read a Mills and Boon/harlequin that I've really loved before.

The tall, dark, brooding were-hunk actually tripped his fragile, petite, human future-mate, turning her into a walking tribute to a modernist painter, since she fell into her bowl of tomato soup.
So he and his friend quickly established she was his and because she was his she was automatically in danger because of the big, bad, psycho wolf on the loose with a huge chip on his god-wannabe shoulder and a enormous grudge against the tall, dark, brooding were-hunk. At the same time the fragile, petite, human future-mate figured the two hunks were nuts and bolted...And proceeded to walking into a trap by the big, bad, psycho wolf laying in wait at her home.
The two hunks – who were not crazy, BTW – rescued this silly, fragile, petite, human future mate...And that’s when the story really started,

Unfortunately the only good thing about this book was the beginning. The rest of the story never lived up to the expectations the beginning spawned and it was mostly due to heroine. While I somehow understood the Mason’s motivations and reasons, Torrance was something else entirely. She was all over the place, first she didn’t want anything to do with him, second she wanted nothing more than to jump his bones (not that I blame her), third she was afraid of getting hurt, fourth she didn’t give a damn about anything just jumping his bones (again, I don’t blame her)...On and on it went, with the author's attempt at justifying this with the way she grew up and the number her mother did on her. Sorry, I just didn’t buy it, and it quickly grew repetitive and eye-roll inducing.

I merely skimmed the pages through the second part, just wanting it to end already.
I was curious about the rest of this trilogy at first, but now, having read this one, I’ll most certainly pass on the rest. Sad, but true.(less)

The story is the same story as any other warewolf/vampire novels. He finds his mate, and needs to have her. Good thing it's a safe story to take on, because it's still good! The plot is fabulous, but over-the-top sexual tension in the main character's thought line drags it into a slogging swampy un-motivated read. I never thought you could have too much sexual tension. Well, I'm kind of kicking myself for buying all three books at once. Oh well.

I thought the premise of the paranormal world was good. I also thought the technical quality of the writing was good. The sexytimes were spicy (in a very good way!).

I didn't like the heroine, though, and I didn't really feel invested in the story or the characters and their HEA. I can't really pinpoint it beyond that...and a general sense of "eh, okay" once I finished it.

I've never really been into werewolves in books.(or outside of books for that matter???)
But then I read a bundle I bought, written by another author and found that I actually do like them. Simply because they are very "YOU ARE MINE AND THAT'S THAT"-ish. If I'd met a man like that real life, it wouldn't matter that he looks like mr.hottie wolf from True Blood, he'd meet Miss.PMS.

Damn, I so wanted to love this book. It started out great, hooked me immediately and I was off and running. Sooon though I was bored. I have read a great many reviews says Torrance was what turned them off, I have to agree in part but really I was much more annoyed with Mason. He CONSTANTLY throws his "Werewolf" into Tori's face. From the beginning we find Mason a strong, georgeous half breed werewolf looking for a psychotic killer. He and his partner Jeremy stop in a cafe to eat when he immediately detects his "Life Mate". All he does he smell her at first, he doesn't know who she is. Then he finally sees her and is afraid that she will walk out of the cafe without ever noticing him. So what does he do...he trips her. The minute she looks at him there is the connection. He knows he must be with her. Now that he has noticed her he feels Simmons (the pscho) will want to harm her.

Torrance a quiet, petite woman that really wants nothing to do with men or relationships. As a girl she grew up with her mother constantly going through relationship after relationship. So she now sees that men will just leave you in the end so why bother. She wants nothing but what her dream is and that is Love. She believes that without it nothing will last. Then she meets Mason...after being tripped of coarse. She can't help feel drawn or connected to him someway. Even though he appears to be some kind of lunatic as he tries to get her to go with him but he can not tell her why. So of coarse what does she do...she flees the scene.

But fate has other plans for them. Afterall Simmons was watching Mason and now wants nothing more to destroy anything and everything he holds dear, including Torrance. So of coarse circumstances bring Torrance and Mason together again. He can't help is forwing attraction to her and wanting to be with her. Yet he wants nothing to do with a blood bond to her. He wants nothing to do with actually loving her. He tells Torrance that he wants to be with her, he would never leave her, and will always be faithful.

Torrance can't help her growing feelings for Mason. She knows she is falling in love with him. Yet he has already told her that he can't love her, he's just not wired that way. Growing up with seeing men constantly leave her mother Torrance doesn't want anything less than love. Afterall without the men always leave. She knows he will never give her what she wants but she doesn't know if she is strong enough to leave him or live that kind of life.

Can Mason get over his fear of loving her and actually open up his hear before it is too late. With a killer stalking her, love may be his only way of saving her. He may be strong physcially but will he be strong enough emotionally to love her and let her love him. With time running out he is in a fight for his heart and her life.(less)

Talk about first impressions. Werewolf Mason sniffs out his mate, comes up blank on how to approach her, freaks out as she starts to pass him by, so he trips her -- how suave, you gotta love it. Apologies and flirting come next and it seems like his ploy's going to work until Mase's buddy rats him out and the mate-to-be Torrance flees her encounter with the gorgeous crazy guy. But the intense pull between mates and an evil werewolf with a score to settle who sees Torry as Mase's achille's heel and makes plans for her torturous demise, mean that if Torry wants to live she is going to have to take her chances with the yummy insane guy. As Mase and Torry begin to explore the undeniably intense attraction between them, it is clear that they both have their issues-- Mase wants to avoid love having seen the damage that its loss can cause first hand and Torry will settle for nothing less.

Last Wolf Standing is the first book in Byrd's new series for Nocturne. Byrd gives us a group of hunky half blood werewolves (Bloodrunners) who, in order to earn their place in the pack, must hunt down rogue werewolves that have gone to the dark-side and have become addicted to killing and eating humans. All these hotter than hot Bloodrunners have their emotional issues from being "used" as guard dogs for the pack while being treated like scum for their mixed heritage and their human blood.

The basis for the series is pretty simple and somewhat familiar if you substitute "blood lust' for 'meat lust', 'rogue vampire' for 'rogue werewolf' and hunky 'Bloodrunners' for sexy 'Vampire hunters' or 'Guardians', 'Breeds' or 'Watchers' you've just read the synopsis for at least five current popular vampire paranormal romance series. Add to that the fact that the mate bond is sealed by a bite and drinking blood and it looks an awful lot like the editor said, 'great idea but there's too many vamp stories out there right now, how about shifters instead?' But still I'm a sucker for sexy shifters, so I liked this and while there was nothing deep and complicated here plotwise the character interaction between Mase and Torry and between Mase and his fellow Bloodrunners was good enough that I'll be reading the rest.

If you like these light and sexy shifter romances, and have already read Scions: Resurrection (Silhouette Nocturne) by Michelle Read earlier this year, Karen Whiddon has a similar series you might want to check out at the used book store while you are waiting for the next Bloodrunners. A few of the older ones are Silhouettes but the newer ones are published under the Nocturne banner.

Their eyes meet and it's instant magic. Mason is busy trying to feed his friend and catch a rogue werewolf at the time but when he catches the delicious scent of his mate he's instantly on the prowl. Desperate to get to her but unsure of how to approach her, he does the only thing he can think of to get her to stay and talk wit...more Rhyannon Byrd's Last Wolf Standing stars Torrance Wilson and werewolf Mason Dillinger. Torrance is minding her own business, getting lunch at a cafe when she meets Mason. Their eyes meet and it's instant magic. Mason is busy trying to feed his friend and catch a rogue werewolf at the time but when he catches the delicious scent of his mate he's instantly on the prowl. Desperate to get to her but unsure of how to approach her, he does the only thing he can think of to get her to stay and talk with him. Thinking fast, he employs a foolproof plan and trips her. Gallantly he comes to her aid but his intensity unnerves Torrance and pretty soon she's fleeing him. Unfortunately, the rogue werewolf Mason was tracking caught the whole spectacle and follows Torrance to her home and attacks her. Luckily for her, Mason was hot on his mate's heels and was able to thwart the attack. He takes her up to the mountains to protect her and to also hopefully lay claim to the woman nature has decreed as his mate. Due to the hierarchy within the werewolf clan, Mason and his family have dealt with prejudice all his life and because of it he's afraid to love and to trust, believing it will make him vulnerable. Torrance is willing to mate with Mason and accept the strange and frightening new world she's been thrust into, but she won't do it without his love. Mason is going to have to learn to let go of his own pride and let his little mate into his heart if he's going to win her.

The introduction of Mason and Torrance was extremely fun. I've never read about the hero grabbing his heroine's attention by tripping her. His near frantic attempts to make Torrance believe that he was harmless was so funny to read about, especially after he starts freaking her out with his intensity. Unfortunately, once the fun of their first meeting passes, it all goes downhill. The rogue werewolf that attacks Torrance is a barely fleshed out, one dimensional bad guy. He's angry that Mason killed his brother 5 years ago and has just now found a way to get his revenge. After that we don't see the villain again until the end, but he does pop up every now and again through lame phone calls, where he passes along his dire threats.

The worldbuilding of the werewolf clan and their hierarchy was not very informative or imaginative and the whole pace of the book was slow. Rhyannon Byrd really doesn't do anything with the story except have the the hero and heroine go back and forth on why they can't love each other. The villain pops up every now and again with his telephone tough guy act, while the heroine bemoans the fact that the love of her life won't love her back and the hero stresses that his mate can't get past the fact that he's a werewolf.

The sex was also boring, I thought. I was surprised that a Rhyannon Byrd novel would have such tepid, lukewarm love scenes. There was only two sex scenes in the book and they were pretty yawn worthy.

All in all, I was disappointed with the Last Wolf Standing and can't recommend it. It didn't have any interesting characters that I would want to revisit, the sex was nothing to write home about and the pace of the book was as riveting as watching paint dry. :((less)

I would have to say this book has been a refreshing twist into the world of Paranormal Romance! usually strong vamp/were stomp their way through and leave nothing in their wake! Including affairs of the heart....they take what they want and never look back in rapid succession.

So it was okaay, but...

I found the first third of the book to be very wordy and not in a conversational way so in the end I found myself skimming huge chunks, not good.

The other issue I had was the ending, it was reminiscent of a film were the heroine is captured by the bad guy who then proceeds to tell her his evil plan only for her to be rescued two seconds after he's finish and thus able to thwart his evilness!

I got to say what I love the most about Rhyannon Byrds writing is the complexity of the relationships. She really knows how to built the tension and describe the feelings of the characters to the point where you feel like you are right there in the room. She is one of my favorite writers for this reason alone. She may not have as much of the different worlds or long explanations of backdrops or complexity of story sometimes but her one on one character scenes are some of the best I've read. I ju...more

I borrowed this book from my mother in law.

The Good:

Mrs. Byrd's worldbuilding was superb. It draws the readers in and keeps them on the edge of their seats throughout the story. Humor, hot romance, palpable attraction.

The Bad:

I'd have liked to see a little more background on Mason's parents. I feel that could have further enriched the story.

This book was kind of slow for me. I liked the beginning, then i had to skip some parts because it was sooo irritating to read. I plowed through it with some minor skips and loved the ending. I might be a long time before i read the next book this series.

This story is extremely hot and steamy throughout. She is the typical mousy girl and he the big bad wolf with an attitude problem. He can't commit and she just wants someone to love her. A great read for any who enjoy a good werewolf romance.

Great story with very fleshed out characters. This is a book that you get lost in and sucked into the Bloodrunner world. Fantastic plot and setting as well. I reccommend it to anyone who loves good sci-fi and a good romance on the side.

I had to skip several parts because it got so sappy and repetitive, but good enough to keep going. I think the next one will be better. The plot is thickening and the male lead has already been introduced and their story sounds better.

Not sure why I even read any of the fated mate kind of stories where essentially they're a couple once they meet or are in "scenting" range. Torry seemed sweet and Mase frustratingly stubborn. It was just meh for me.
