natural objects do not just hark back to more bountiful, less conflicted times; the natural elements also highlight the violences that are confronted and wielded: "nothing is more exquisite than the silver scream/ of the starve earth/" "The moon dies across the continent/ The wind screams and something lives"
The first sixty pages of this book contain a biography of Bulosan and a discussion of the themes of his poetry. One thing I really noticed about the biography is that whenever mentioned Bulosan's partners, the author made a big deal that they weren't just romantic ties, but political ties. She did so in a way that seemed to imply that because the two belonged to the same political organization, this somehow lessened their romance. I don't get this.
