This book earned four stars because I like the ideas intertwined in the story. I haven't read this with kids, so that might change my rating. The idea of bartering for goods will be new to most children, and I think they will understand the girls' desire to buy and free the monkey.

Wow! This book introduces a potentially unfamiliar culture, explains the concept of bartering and trading, and sticks up for animals captured as “exotic pets”—and tells a good story to boot.

Follow two young girls through the village marketplace as they trade various goods with the goal of freeing a monkey who has been captured from his native habitat and is being sold as a pet. Monkey for Sale is a good humane education tie-in to a discussion about why wild animals don’t make good pets.

This is a great story that provides a fun and interesting look at market day in a village in the Democratic Republic of Congo. You follow Luzolo as she decides how to spend her money at market. It also provides a good memory game when the trading begins... The illustrations are very rich and beautifully muted color etchings. Thoroughly entertaining.

We read this book during our unit on economics in preparation for the Children's Business Fair. It shows a great example of why different customers make purchases.
