This is a wholesome, period-piece set in South Australia near the turn of the century (1900), I believe. A down-on-its-luck family hatches a plan in hopes of securing a prosperous future for itself. The family builds a shallow steam boat to do trade primarily on the Murray River. Obstacles to their success include a not so pleasant family member, politics, the river itself, other steam vessels, and the developing railroad. I first read this book as a young adolescent in the early to mid 1980s. ...more
