After reading the excellent 'Ma Polinski's Pockets' I wanted to try some more of SS.

I was very disappointed with this book. It's extremely short and, whilst there is nothing wrong with the writing, you end up wondering what the point of the story was.

I think this may be because we only really see an unremitting bleakness in the life of the heroine and, although she sorts out one problem in an inventive manner, you feel that you desperately want some indication that there is some happiness to com

Recommends it for: struggling readers
Shelves: teen, 2012
This is a book for struggling readers. She is brought up as a gypsy - a traveller - who enjoys the countryside and all it holds. But others take against them. Her brother is taunted and teased until he kills himself and then her dad dies and she is left the farm and her land. Josie believes that the neighbours caused their deaths by being mean and horrible so is out for revenge.

Born in Edinburgh. I'm a complete swot - love books always have! Currently obsessed with Georgian and Victorian explorers, about whom I write and with 1950s Britain for my Mirabelle Bevan murder mystery series set in London and Brighton.
