This is an old book (first published in the 1950s). That's important because many of the problems with the book (and the reason for the low rating) were common in SF of those days. Particular problems here were the minimal character development and a clunky style.

In any case, this book is the adventures of Med Serviceman Calhoun and his companion, a tormal (see below) named Murgatroyd. The Med Servicemen travel to places throughout the galaxy where there is disease, accompanied by the remarkable
