A rich aristocrat with the time and money spends it watching and shooting birds. The author has some strange opinions when it comes to bird conservation and thinks nothing of shooting those species he deems undesirable. Regarding caged birds he states "Caging a bird is not cruel. As long as it has regular food, water and is living in a warm enough temperature it will be happy, more or less regardless of the size of its cage or aviary" and indicates a lack of empathy with birds. I enjoyed learning about the wide range of bird life in England as discussed in the book, early efforts to broadcast birdsong, and how bird species are affected by human civilization. Also enjoyed charming scenes in the English countryside. I don't know whether the author's ideas of bird protection are good or not, as the author is a country gentleman who shoots as well as saves.
