Seriously, is Johns even capable of writing non-bombastic dialogue? I ask because the first couple of chapters of this book are just horrible - stilted, theatrical (in the high school musical sense) and tone-deaf. It's imaginative sure - but a "bio virus"? How's that different from a virus - which is by its nature biological? Each of the mini-tales seems like something from 70's comics, and if it's an homage then bravo. But it doesn't mean I enjoy it any more than I enjoy reading that ancient te...more

I picked this up on a whim at the library, not knowing too much about the Sinestro Corp. This book was a great introduction to them. As we follow a new member of the corp, we find out the stories of how different characters decided to join the Sinestro Corp and why, exactly, they want to destroy the Green Lanterns. I haven't read the Sinestro Corp War yet (which is what these stories were originally part of as side stories and one-shots), but I suspect I'll have a much stronger grounding in it w...more
Tales of the Sinestro Corps collects a great number of origin stories and short filler stories, but they are told so well and visualized so brilliantly, that even if you know them already, they are just so fun to read within the context of this growing story arc. The presentation and organization are great, as is the flow from one arc to another. The character listings in the back are quite helpful, too, to get caught up to speed on each green lantern corps member's current status and to learn w...more
Reprints Green Lantern #18-20, Green Lantern: Sinestro Corps Special #1, Tales of the Sinestro Corps: Parallax #1, Tales of the Sinestro Corps: Cyborg Superman #1, Tales of the Sinestro Corps: Ion #1, Green Lantern/Sinestro Corps: Secret Files and Origins #1. The Sinestro Corps mounts its attack on Earth and the Green Lanterns prepare to fight them. The book is mostly a collection of short back-up stories, a Who's Who of the Green Lantern Corps and the Sinestro Corps and a couple of one-shots th...more
While this is nice to have, what with the exhaustive listing of MANY of the active Green Lanterns, as well as members of the Sinestro Corps, I can't see how this is worth the $30 cover price, even in hardcover. The rest of the stories in here were originally back-up stories or were one-shot specials, and most of THOSE just re-tell the origins of some of the villains for new readers. Glad to have it, but glad I got it as a gift.

The new character stories are far more interesting than the more well known villain stories. It does provide some nice back stories to make us care about who would otherwise be faceless enemies. It also gives short snippets of every known lantern which is nice to see. This one is definitely unnecessary, but interesting for fans.
Written well enough, as I tend to expect from Geoff Johns, but it just a collection of stories of different characters rather than a truly cohesive story. It didn't really capture me, and was quickly read and set aside.

Let me say that I love Johns' GL and all the Sinestro Corps War stuff but this trade just didn't have enough meat to it. I did really like some of the complete tales like the Kyle vs. Parallax and the Superman-Prime one. Other than that it was eating appetizers instead of a meal. Overall, nothing vital to the story and not enough to reread.
