Author of six books dealing with the experince of place and natural history. Most recent book is The Paradise of al These Parts: A natural history of Boston (Beacon Press 2008).
What a lovely selection of essays, perfect for reading before bedtime. All seem hopeful in their own way (although some of the hope is for solving climate change- when the essay was written almost 20 years ago...) and many prompted research into the history and geography and ecology of New England.
This was a very soothing read - it's been a long time since I read a book of essays. It poignantly conveys the damage we (human society) are doing to the natural world while also speaking to a hope that people will start valuing nature again.
This is an awesome book that makes one stop and think about environmental issues as well as remembering childhood activities. It isn't a dry, boring science book but heartfelt essays from a man who loved the area in which he lived as well as the creatures that shared his space.
