This is a really fantastic book about biblical counseling. What I liked most about it was that it was very practical and very engaging. Rather than just saying how you counsel someone, the author talked about the truths of God and who we are in Jesus through Scripture and what we can then believe about ourselves and the problems we face. This had the effect of not only equipping a person to counsel someone, but take a close look at themselves and experience their own convictions. I definitely fo...more
I confess there are times that when counseling others I feel like I'm "winging it" - not sure exactly what to say, how to say it, and unsure just how helpful my words have been (on these occasions, belief in the sovereignty of God is a particular comfort to me!). And I suspect many other ministers would say the same. To the pastor - and to every Christian - who desires to offer godly, sage, and fruitful counsel to people with problems, David Powlison offers much wisdom and encouragement in his b...more
There are some books where once you pick them up, you can’t stop reading. For me, these books are either a grand and adventurous fictional story or a piece of punchy and witty nonfiction. Though books on theology are very enjoyable, rarely can I read them from front to back. Most of them are a laborious work of love to get through. However, Powlison’s Seeing with New Eyes is the opposite. Powlison writes with a beauty and clarity where most other Christian authors fall short. And yet, he can tre...more
This book is a strategically chosen collection of articles from the "Journal of Biblical Counseling." You can get a taste of the book by reading a 2002 article that is chapter 14 in the book here:

The chapters are not entirely sequential so reading them out of order is no problem.
Powlison challenges much contemporary psychological thinking about painful life expereinces and how they are NOT determinative. He is not an insensitive Bible basher, however. His...more

This book is a collection of articles and essays arranged around a central theme: “understanding the human condition through the lens of Scripture.” To that end, Powlison’s work is quite helpful, reminding us of God’s sovereignty, our sinfulness, and the solution found only in Christ. Heavy doctrine, yet presented here in the context of day-to-day life (as it always should be). The result, while slightly academic at times, is both potent and timely. A solid resource.

Dynamics of Biblical Change
I am currently taking Powlison's Dynamics of Biblical Change Course and have tremendous respect for his teaching. This book blew me away as it dug into different aspects of biblical counseling and really tore apart the meaning of different bible passages--I particularly enjoyed "Don't Worry: Luke 12." I think the title and cover capture the idea of seeing things through the lens of scripture and the clarity it brings. I had a little more trouble with x-ray questions, it was almost too much for m...more
Excellent book written by Powlison!
I appreciate how he knows how to nuance all his sayings! He cannot not nuance all the time and that makes his writting so interesting and perceptive to what christians live every day. In other words, He knows how to verbalize and explain why some thinkings and perceptions are biblical or not biblical in the counseling ministry as well as in a psychology carreer. This was a delicious reading for me, studying this domain at university. It encourages me to know t...more

"When the gene mapping is complete, when the folks on Prozac still can't get along with their spouses, when the fountain of youth still does not arrive in a bottle, when money and achievement fail to satisfy, and when your clone grows up to hate you ... sinners will yet find Christ to be the one we need." (p. 248)
I was impacted by Powlison's concern with "mapping the Word on to the details of life" approach to "how we are/what we do" vs. taking a more behavioristic approach to Biblical Counseling. Maybe both have value, I am not sure? But if anything, this book was definitely a cold drink of water on a hot summer day!
