The Courtship of the Vicar's Daughter is the sequel to the charming novel, The Widow of Larkspur Inn. Here you'll find the continuation of the stories and characters introduced in the first novel. Julia Hollis is engaged to Vicar Andrew Phelps. Her three children are Philip, Aleda, and Grace. His two children are Elizabeth and Laurel. Taking more of a central role in this novel are Elizabeth Phelps who is being pursued by two men: Paul Treves and Jonathan Raleigh. A slightly funnier romance invo...more

I just finished this book and found myself wishing it wasn't over! Such a beautifully written book, and a large but well-developed cast of characters.
I have to say, the book didn't engage me at first. This is the second in the series, and not having read the first, I had trouble keeping track of all the characters. Along with that comes my one complaint about the book: I really wish there was a list of the characters at the beginning to help the reader know who's related to whom and that sort of...more

I come away from reading this book with the same sense of total satisfaction I experience after devouring a great meal. There is much to be treasured in the stories of the good people who populate the village of Gresham. We start with Vicar Phelps and his lovely fiance, Julia Hollis. You will have met these two good people if you read the first book in the series, "The Widow of Larkspur Inn". As Julia and Andrew prepare for their marriage they see around them loving couples, many with paths not q...more
Lawana Blackwell has my utter respect. Despite the rather large cast of characters in The Courtship of the Vicar's Daughter, each and every one had such a unique personality. All the characters - even minor ones - were well-rounded, believable individuals.
The book itself almost seemed to have several different ongoing plots, though all, for the most part, involving a romance in the small village of Gresham. I'm really not even sure there was a single main character, but rather many. Now, while...more

I love this series. All the characters from the first book were there with interesting new ones. While there were four romances going, the hardest storyline for me was Philip's life at boarding school. What a terrible system for young boys and girls (and to think it continues to this day - hopefully with many changes).
The most intriguing story was of Seth who had been in prison on a trumped up charge. His journey remaking his life was very uplifting.

Another delightful visit to the English village of Gresham! Lawana Blackwell has captured my attention again with wonderful villagers that I know so well from #1, and introduces some new characters that are just as intriguing and enjoyable.
Loved the story line of Seth & Thomas Langford and Mercy. And that Mrs. Kingston is a clever, inventive woman that faces no challenge she can't accomplish for herself - or any one else who needs her! From my original thought (at the VERY beginning of #1)...more

I have enjoyed reading Ms. Blackwell's historical fiction. I believe that this is almost the best novel so far. She certainly comes up with vivid personality traits of all her characters, adding various interesting dilemmas for all of them. Every character seems to have at least some growth spiritually, and some immense. The love, romance, courting is special, very cautious and sweet that helps you feel like you are the one that is feeling so excited! Faith is always at the top of the list of im...more
I am enjoying this series much more than I expected. These books have been around for years and Blackwell's writing reminds me a bit of another favorite author, Michael Phillips, because she does more than tell a story. She disciples her reader in their Christian faith. The plot is good though unsurprising, the English setting and time period are interesting, but the characters thoughts as Christians are what I like the best because they call me to a deeper walk with Christ and force me to refle...more
I really liked this book, though it took me a few chapters to get into it. I enjoyed all the different story lines that were interconnected, though the title plot line seemed almost a lesser plot line. I also had trouble keeping some of the minor characters straight, but perhaps if I'd read the first book in the series I wouldn't have had that problem. I really enjoyed reading this book and felt it drew me closer to God through the inspiring stories of the characters.
Just as good as book #1. In this book, we follow the romance of Julia and Andrew as they prepare for their wedding. Phillip and Audrey go off to boarding school. Newcomer Seth and his adopted son Thomas buy a house in the country and meet their neighbor, Mercy Sanders. The squire courts a reluctant Mrs. Kingston, and finally we come to the courtship of Elizabeth, the vicar's daughter. Which suitor will win her heart and her hand?
The second book in the series. The story continues in the small town of Gresham, where the widow continues to run the bordering house, sees one of her borders go off to be married, sees her eldest son go off to boarding school, where he will deal with the older boys bullying. A couple new characters are introduced and their journey into each others lives is quite funny.
Another endearing book.

Another sweet and delightful story about the residents of Gresham, England. I enjoyed the glimpses of what life was like in the 1870s and was interested in learning of some of the advancements that I hadn't expected to have been around that early, such as gas stoves. Again, the village seems like a lovely place to live, almost storybook perfect, but still in a realistic way.
Absolutely superb! I stayed up until the early morning hours just to finish this book. I loved visiting the village of Gresham again! I can't wait to begin the next book in the series. I wish I could personally go there and walk the village with Mrs. Kingston and stay at the Larkspur Inn. Lawana Blackwell is a very talented writer.
I enjoyed this book as I did the first in this series. The title seems a bit off to me, although the story of the Vicar's daughter's courtship is covered, it didn't seem to me like it was the main one. There are several ongoing stories throughout -- I felt like the story of Mercy Sanders and Seth Langford was the main one in this book, and I hope we hear more about them in the next books in this series.
I continue to enjoy this series and liked this even more than the first installment. Felt like the author was really hitting her stride. Interestingly, it felt like half of the book about about the courtship of a different character -- and a good story, too -- but I kept wondering about the vicar's daughter and whether that line was ever going to catch fire!
I think it was a good book, but as good as the first one, but still I enjoyed it tremendously. This one is mostly about not only healing but moving on with your life and getting second chances.
Again, it's a very light book, filled with good messages, with characters with good hearts and intentions.
This book had more Christian references that the Widow of Larkspur Inn, so if anyone had a problem with that, it's going to get worse now. But still, it has a clean, happy message.
