Ah, Candide. What is there to say about Candide? I believe I read this book as a high school senior and that was the perfect timing, too. What's not to love about a guy who, even through a bunch of terrible incidents, believes that this really is "the best of all possible worlds?" With this book, Voltaire has mastered satire. If you don't like dry humor, blasphemy, violence, and romance, this is not the book for you. If you do, then huzzah! You've found the perfect piece of literature to quench ...more

I only read Candide out of the two and thought it was excellent. After getting over the initial writing style I found it witty and entertaining, although very depressing. Voltaire argued effectively against the "best of all worlds" thought of the time and wrapped his story up in a good and enlightening way.
