I was really intrigued by the idea of a hero with one arm. The rest of the novel is fairly standard romance - a seamstress is mistaken for a noble woman, gets kidnapped by pirates, falls in love with pirate, and helps pirate exact his revenge. The one-armed hero should have really helped set this apart from others in the genre and given it a neat twist or flavor.

But that doesn't happen, at all. It's as if Novak wrote the book, sent it to the publisher, and they came back and said "Hey, do someth...more

Enjoyed it. Wasn't an all-time fav, but enjoyable enough. Lots of angst...and lots of sexual tension building, without allowing the reader the payoff of seeing the consumation, which left me a little let-down. Intricate plot, leads readers on quite a ride. Likeable characters...though I was often perplexed by how much this one-armed main character could do. I have a one-armed friend, who is amazing with as much as he can do, but still, I think it unlikely that he could tie up an unwilling captiv...more

Sometimes you are in the mood for a good, fluffy, mindless, blood pumping, vicarious living romance novel to take your mind off of more complex matters. When that hits, you know you are settling down for a formula, in that same way that you reach for your favorite comfort food. Comforting in its familiarity, Of Noble Birth was just enough different and had just enough character development that I truly enjoyed it.

Oh, and the price - having been alerted by the blog "Pixel of Ink" that the book wa...more

***Possible Spoilers....but I'm saving you some time.***

Was interesting since the Hero of the story, Nathaniel, is born with a deformed arm. So....not your typical physical perfection from the Hero. But he's still very handsome and muscular and every thing else about him is typical romance novel perfection.
When Nathaniel is born, his jerk of a father, tries to smother him since he is deformed. The father can't have a deformed son as an heir. The maid saves him and leaves....raising him the best...more

Please tell me there will be a sequel!!! "Of Nobel Birth" by Brenda Novak, had everything a good romance should have, action, adventure and attraction.
An engaging tale, where a babe of Nobel birth, born less than perfect , is rescued from an attempt on his life by his very own father, the Duke of Greystone. Much to the displeasure of the Duke, he lives to become a pirate, scoundrel to some, yet an honorable man, Capt. Nathaniel Kent of the ship the ROYAL VENGEANCE. I loved the strength of this u...more

I've been building a steady pile of books to read on my iPod, so I thought it was about time to start reading one of them. I was feeling in the mood for some historical romance and the mention of pirates had me eager to read. Who wouldn't love to read about some sexy pirates? The premise was pretty cute, what with the whole case of mistaken identity. The two leads met in an interesting way and I loved seeing them interact. I will say that things seemed a bit incestuous at times, considering that...more

Just finish reading this wonderful story. It really show that disabled people can do anything to survive in this world. Nathaniel is an amazing character because he shows true strength in his ability to survive to prove his father, The Duke of Greyhouse, that even as cripple with only one good arm, he is a man not to be mess with at all and make his father' miserable. He defended those he loves and fight against his father and his half brother, Clifton. Alexandra is a seamstress who was running...more

What can I say, for my first book by Brenda Novak I couldn’t have been happier. I didn’t realize until afterwords, that this was Brenda’s first novel. I have read alot of debut ficton over the years and this is one book that did not read like a debut. It was engaging from the get go, I liked that neither the hero or the heroine were perfect.

Of Noble Birth will take you on a voyage and one that I do not think will disappoint anyone. Our hero is Nathaniel ( I love this name by the way), he is a pi...more

This is a historical romance. The Duke of Greystone’s son is born with a deformity, the lower part of one of his arms never developed. When told of this, the Duke attempted to suffocate the newborn and his housekeeper intervened, and took the child to raise on her own. Twenty plus years later Nathaniel, as the child was named, decided to take matters into his own hands, since he is not allowed to claim his name and inheritance, he “pirates” his father’s ships and takes their cargoes and sells t...more

I know the cover is a bit cheesy but this book was actually really good! I had no problem staying interested in this one. It was not the typical historical romance. It had some suspense and they did not end up in bed every ten pages like some romance novels. It was close a few times but no more than than that and I find that some how refreshing. Sometimes less is more.

I like the characters a lot. especially Nathaniel! He has such a big heart and he is courageous. He has only one arm and even tho...more

This is one of those rare reading experiences that will engage every level of the reader's brain. The romantic factor is certainly central, but the family situation for both Alexandra and Nathaniel are critical to the story's development; the politics of the time--the imminent nature of the Crimean War is very much present; the almost sociopathic nature of the evil that drives Nathaniel's father and brother are an over-arching canopy to the story's character and context. Just a wonderfully well-...more

The most interesting twist to this book (from your typical romance/seafaring book) is that Nathaniel is missing most of a limb. Not to say that in any way hampers him or his dashingly handsome good looks. In a way, it kind of ruins the "different-ness" of the book, as of course, Nathaniel is incredibly handsome with a perfect body and can do anything a regular person can do. Anyhow, it does serve as the catalyst for the storyline, so moving on...

I liked both Nathaniel and Alexandra as they were...more

This book had a lot going on. Almost too much. Both Nathaniel and Alexadra were caught by their foes several times and always escaped. There was little spark between the two lovers and Nathaniel was just plane mean to Alexandra at times. He fell short of the hero you would expect. The story line wasn't believable in several areas. At one part of the book both the Duke and Jake were gun running then towards the end the author wrote as though Jake was the only one gun running. It was as if she for...more

Just because a book is free (with good ratings) doesn't mean it is actually worth reading. Sadly, I discovered this. I downloaded this from Amazon as a Free Kindle book. It sounded promising... not spectacular. And I would say that is what I got. The story kept me mostly interesting though everything that happened was highly convenient and Nathaniel's missing hand didn't even trouble him when he had to tie ropes!

Alexandra was a very stereotypical heroine with her easily succumbing to Nathaniel's...more

I was really intrigued by the title of this story,So started reading and was mind blown away by how this brave hero Nathaniel Kent displayed his strength throughout his life. Wow, his father , the duke of greystone is so cruel and ruthless man. Phew! I kept holding my breath when Nathaniel was tortured at the worst place and desperately waiting for someone to help him. And he was saved . (sigh). And there is so much intense emotions between him and Alexandra. Love the epilogue. But wanted to kno...more

I really enjoyed this book. There were emotions, turmoil, suspense, action, and humor too. I liked the characters and their personalities, except for the bad guys, of course. :) I liked the honor and loyalty of the crew. The helpmates and traitors of the new people met. I would read this book again, but more for a rainy day cuddle-up book. There were some really good parts and I liked the sparring between the two leads. This is a great shorter read with plenty filled into all the scenes and char...more

The story is definitely appealing, and I love the suspense in the middle of it. Nathaniel was born of noble birth from Albert Kinbolten Duke of Greystone. Since, he was born deformed (one arm)the Duke has nothing to do with him, but suffocate him because he does not want to have a deformed heir. Nathaniel was rescued by Martha the Duchess maid and fled with baby Nathaniel. Apparently, Martha was killed by an accident perpetrated by the Duke of Greystone. The rest was Nathaniels revenge towards h...more

Alexandra, is desperate to escape her cruel stepfather who beats her, she finds a way to escape with a disguise never expecting to be kidnapped and taken aboard a pirate's ship. Only they think she is a daughter of a lord so they can ransom her, but no matter how much she protests they don't believe her to be a seamstress. Nathaniel, is very bitter toward his father, but when one of his closest friends gets captured he goes out to capture his father daughter, and his step sister....only he never...more

The first two chapters introducing the H and h were good; I had reason to believe that the whole book would be good. However, it starts going down from there and when you start reading of episodes rescuing, just in the nick of time, the heroine or the hero ala the ole Saturday matinees...well, it looses its appeal. I only finished it because I was so far into it. This was bundled with Honor Bound as a Kindle freebie. I think I'll archive it for now and read #2 when I get desperate.

I'm not one for historical romances but I couldn't help getting this book. Wronged hero, heroine in the wrong place at the wrong time...and it grabbed me right from the start. What a sweet story this turned out to be! I'm so glad I ignored the few poor reviews on amazon and picked this book up. Brenda's got a great writing style and she's piqued my interest in her other stories. I'd very much to like to be mistaken for a scoundrel's half sister if Alexandra's story is the result!

Yet another book cover that makes me glad I have a Kindle. Yeesh!

Anyway, this is pretty much a cookie cutter romance but it's fun and entertaining and a good read for when you need some brain candy. I'm sure it's not a spoiler that the hero and heroine end up married by the end, but what is different is that they move to America. Doesn't usually happen in Regency/Victorian romances. Also, the hero was born with part of an arm missing.

I mostly skimmed through this one. It was a free download, otherwise I wouldn't have bought it. All of the beginning towards middle were very odd, with him thinking she was his sister. Too weird. Because of that, it seemed trashy. I wouldn't recommend this one to anyone. And it was very long for a romance, with too much fake action. But the romance itself was good. ;)

Stockholm syndrome, possible perceived incest (only for the first third of the book for those), treason, kidnapping, pirates, a one-armed man, the girl sold in prostitution (but saved!), the guy sent to prison, a lost and regained birthright, terror on the high seas... it had too much stuff. Oddly enough no sex scene. Unless I blocked it out...

This is my first Brenda Novak read and I LOVED it! It had a great blend of romance, adventure and intrigue. I fell in love with Nathaniel almost immediately and liked Alexandra's spirit. I like that she wasn't ditzy enough to immediately fall into bed with him despite him being such a strong alpha type. A great romantic read.

Got this one free on Kindle. I liked it. It is a romance novel, so it has all of the typical elements that you would expect to find, but there were some twists, too--like the fact that the hero is missing a hand (which doesn't seem to impair him in the least) and the heroine is a lowly seamstress, instead of the usual noblewoman.

This wasn't awful - just somewhat boring. I chose it as an antidote to the rather heavy book I read before and it might have been a good diversion if it was half as long. If I wasn't anal retentive I would have given up before finishing, after all I knew how it was going to end...

First time reading a historical by Brenda Novak. It's pretty good - the writing is easy to read, the action flows and the characters are interesting. The storyline is rather implausible and it is overly long but it's nice to read a story that is different than the usual fare.

It wasn't totally a clean read, but it was a very captivating story and kept me wanting to read more. My favorite part was that Nathaniel wasn't 'perfect'. It was refreshing that he had imperfections. I didn't give it 5 stars because it wasn't a totally clean book.

I have not read historical romance in forever and picked up this book for a Readathon. It was well-written and enjoyable overall. I liked Ms. Novak's character development, and her dialogue was both witty and appropriate. Though a longer story, it was an easy read. It did bog down slightly around 3/4 of the way through, and I'm sure Ms. Novak could have edited a bit out and still had a fine story. The ending contained a lot of karma, and I liked that a lot as well. Overall, a nice read.

It was a shocking experience that jump-started Brenda Novak’s bestselling author career.

“I caught my day-care provider drugging my children with cough syrup and Tylenol to get them to sleep while I was away,” Brenda says. “It was then that I decided that I needed to do something from home.”

However, writing was the last profession she expected to undertake. In fact, Brenda swears she didn’t have a...more
