In a future where television replaces a school education, citizens sign up for chances to be on re-creations of historical events in a reality tv series known as Historical Survivor. But Survivor's ratings are slipping and the Secretary of Entertainment needs a new idea to get the public's attention. So she creates a script recreating the tragically fatal 1911 quest for the South Pole, complete with pre-programmed catastrophes mimicking the original trek. Then she casts five 14-year-olds, with t...more
"Surviving Antarctica" is about the adventure of five fourteen year old teenagers who try to trek through... well, Antarctica. In 2083 the only way to get a further education besides high school is the toss, which is basically a chance game with dice, and if you win you get a further education but if you lose then you don't. Also, in 2083 the government has found that making everything happen through television (school, entertainment, etc.) is much more cost effective and much less violence prov...more
In 2083, until 8th grade, kids attend teleschool. They watch reality television that is loosely designed to teach them things—Historical Survivor, Dialing for Dollars, and more. Kids who want to continue their education—the only way to really make anything of yourself—is to attempt the Toss, a roll of the dice that determines if you will receive a government scholarship.

Now everybody has a chance, according to the Secretary of Entertainment that is. The Toss decides whether you go to school or not. 5 completely abstract kids all miss the Toss. Historical Survivor is a show initially created to boost the economy and provide entertainment for the people. But now just seems to disgust everybody. These 5 kids with all different talents were chosen to participate in the first ever Historical Survivor with children. They are to set out to the South Pole simulating Ro...more
(If we're going on a witch hunt, I'd wave this book at Suzanne Collins before I'd wave Battle Royale. Just sayin'. But I wouldn't wave anything at her; I still think it's weird how upset some people got over the BR/HG thing. And I try to avoid witch hunts.)

The year is 2083, and American civilization as we know it no longer exists. Years back, the government went bankrupt, crime rates soared, riots and urban trash wars broke out. With the idea that better television programming would keep people in front of their TV's, thus reducing crime and keeping people happy, a new branch of government was formed... the Department of Entertainment.

4.5 stars. Set in America, 2083, where kids are now educated by television and only a lucky few are randomly given scholarships for education past their fourteenth birthday, the Department of Entertainment has set up a series of reality TV shows showing contestants in a historical event - the building of the Pyramids, the Civil War, WWI, and now in Antarctica. Five fourteen-year-olds are chosen for this latest show, the first starring kids, and they're sent to Antarctica to try and survive under...more
This review does contain spoilers. But, I refuse to hide it because I'm too lazy to click on the ones that are hidden, so I think other people might be the same way.
When I first picked up this book, I wasn't really expecting much. My school librarian had actually given it to me for free, so I wasn't sure if I would like it anyway. Also, any time I see the words "Reality TV," I think of Snookie, Honey Boo Boo, and the Kardashians.
Seriously, why are those people filmed? I'm way more awesome than...more

I enjoyed this. It's a futuristic tale in a US whose government has gone completely broke, closed all public schools, and require kids to watch 30 hours of government-created educational television. After eighth grade, only the lucky winners of the "Toss" receive scholarships good for high school and college. Through this system, the rich get richer and poor get poorer, but supposedly it is the fairest way to determine who gets a good education. One of the programs included in the curriculum is...more
The year is 2083. Education has turned into something only for the wealthy or those fortunate enough to win the lottery. Grace, Billy, Robert, Andrew and Polly unfortunately did not get chosen in the lottery to go on to high school and college. For them work was the next option, unless you applied for and got accepted as a contestant on the new reality TV show Antarctic Adventure. Each of these kids applies to be a contestant because of the cash prize of $10,000 if they survive and $100,000 if t...more
IS SURVIVING ANTARCTICA LIKE THE HUNGER GAMES?
yes...and no.
with the recent surge in the popularity of the hunger games trilogy, frustrated fans are going into withdrawal and seeking out dystopian novels with similar themes--deadly games. you'll notice that i, too, have a shelf dedicated to that particular theme because i find it so fascinating.

Younger Young Adults
The year is 2083, and the world has become a place where all education is taught at home, through the TV. Schools don’t exist until unversity/college, and only the rich get to go. There is a dice rolling competition each year that sponsors those who win, to go to school and continue their education.
The TV networks run shows similar to ‘Survivor’, and they decide to run one where they send a handful of 14 year olds out to Antarctica to re create Scotts journey to the pole.

In the year 2083, everyone lives in front of the TV. That's how they're educated, entertained, and controlled. The most popular show on TV is the "Survivor" series, and shows are made based on historical events. This seasons's installment is "Surviving Antarctica," and to boost slumping ratings, five 14-year-old kids have been selected as the cast of the show.

The year is 2083. 5, 14 year old kids are picked to win 10,000 on a tv show where they have to make it to the south pole. The last attempt was in 1912, and the whole team died. The main charcters are: Billy, Grace, Polly, Andrew, and Robert. They were picked by the secretary, for their different talents. The secretary told the kids that they were always being filmed. Little did the kids know that they had cameras in their eyes and that they were all alone. They were put on a ship with 12 dogs an...more
I thought this was a really enjoyable book. It wasn't one that I couldn't put down (like the Inkheart trilogy) but I still thought it was really great! It wasn't depressing or stressful like I thought it was going to be, even though the kids were traveling through Antarctica. It also had a lot of history that I would have never learned about otherwise.
In 2083 education is a series of games, literally. You study by television and if you want to go to high school you have to win a dice toss. Five 14 year olds loose the toss but get lucky by getting picked for the first ever kid reality TV show Surviving Antarctica. Or do they get lucky? Polly, Robert, Grace, Andrew, and Billy are picked to recreate Robert F Scott’s doomed journey to the South Pole for millions of viewers. The survivor’s prize is $10, 000. This book is filled with all kinds of m...more
Great concept, but it must have been difficult to write a 300-page book at a 3rd grade reading level. The language lacks the emotional complexity I've come to expect from good YA, instead relying on short sentences and simple characters with Frog and Toad-era depth. Somebody rewrite this one well, please.
As I am sure many other people have said, this sort of reminded me of The Hunger Games when I first read the description. After you read it though, it's not much like THG at all.
This book is set in the future, in 2083 as the title does say, and when you're 14 instead of going straight to high school and college, you must play the dice in order to see if you win a scholarship to have the money to do so. So you have a 50/50 chance and all is fair. School before that consists of just watching tele...more

This book surprised me - It was so much better than I imagined.
I La-la-LOVE that it was written in 3rd person omniscient though usually I'm more of a 1st person kind of girl.
This book has direct quotes from Robert F. Scott's diary of the trip to the South Pole, so it has true history, but it's based in 2083, so you get to see the author's take on the future (which is mind-blowing, thought-provoking, and very well-written).

I bought this for my 10 year old son. I read it myself and it is a good story and flows nicely and not too scary but just enough excitement. The characters were all easy to relate to and since I had bought it for my son, I was happy to see how the boys in the book had interests and things that would appeal to him as well. I do read a lot of my kids' books before I give it to them to read and them seeing me read it also gives them an even greater interest in reading it themselves. I finished it t...more
This book was written by Andrea White. This is one of the book that has both kind of felling (Emotions and Thrilling). As this book starts out with a Introduction of the main character of the book how they all are struggling for the boast which is the way you could get the scholarship to continue their study as once they were giving there test after they have completed their test there came a application popped write in front of the screen saying "The winner who survive Antarctica gets $100,000 re...more
This is a great book. It's kind of a combination of The Hunger Games and Hatchet: a sci-fi action/survival story. After the Bust and the Urban Trash Wars, the Department of Entertainment takes over education, making Edu-tv the educational system for everyone except the very rich. To up the ratings on their shows, the next Historical Survivor season will feature teenagers: five fourteen-year-olds. They will have to recreate Robert F. Scott's disastrous race to the South Pole. But these teens will...more

This book was awesome. 5 14-year-olds are sent out to Antarctica to re-live the expedition of Robert F. Scott's journey to be the first to the South Pole. Many planned catastrophes happen, and it is harsh weather.
Meanwhile, the cameras are taking footage night and day. Steve is in the entertainment department and seeing what the kids are up to.
But where are the cameramen, in the kid's point of views?
Through the journey, Steve looks out for them, and read to see what happens: how they survive,...more

This story line was really interesting. It was a little freaky, cause I can totally picture some messed up future where reality tv really is a game of life and death. It took a couple chapters for me to start understanding the characters. The story jumped between them so much that I kept having to flip back to re-read who was who, but once they all got together, it was much easier to follow. This book totally did it's job, because while I was reading this super exciting book about the future, it...more
This was a great read....not dreary like hunger games, hatchet, lord of the flies, catcher in the rye, and the maze....but similar due to the teen survival subject. I enjoyed the futuristic setting and the characters were well written and diverse. yes it was a bit sappy and Disney like....(spoiler alert) but sometimes a sappy happy ending and a big chocolate gooey brownie makes the world a better place. Why can't junior high and high schools require kids to read books like this...a good book (li...more
In the year 2083, school past the age of 14 is based on a toss of the dice - or being rich enough to afford it, of course. For those unlucky enough to lose their Toss, life seems bleak indeed - until an episode of Historical Survivor (part of teleschool) offers 5 kids a chance at a scholarship if they reenact Robert Scott's doomed 1912 expedition to the South Pole. But Historical Survivor is very dangerous - and if 5 grown men couldn't escape death, what chance do 5 misfit teenagers have?

'Surviving Antarctica' wasn't as intense as i'd hoped, because I didn't feel I knew the characters as closely as I'd have liked, but it was very good. I enjoyed the way the book was narrated- in third person, but so you could still hear the thoughts of each of the five kids, as well as the DOE guy. Even if I didn't feel like I'd bonded with them, at least I understood what the characters felt. I loved the ideas the author came up with creating this futuristic world- especially because it's not a...more
