I loved this book. Lucien was absolutely sigh-worthy to me. So sad and lonely. And, he got his very own heroine who wouldn't give up on him. Lucien was absolutely sigh-worthy to me. So sad and lonely. And, he got his very own heroine who wouldn't give up on him. Yes, she's a prankster, rather silly, in her own words, and not much for telling the truth, and she can be a pain in the butt at times. But I loved her, warts and all. I think she was just the kind of woman--the very woman--that sad, too-serious Lucien needed.

I loved how she would get him out of his funks with her flirtatious dialogue, and naughty clothing. She drove him crazy with her strawberries and cream scent. It was only fair, since Lucien managed to snare a girl who was unsnareable.

I felt bad for Anya. Being the daughter of the most promiscuous goddess on Olympus, Dysnomia, couldn't have been easy. Everyone was just waiting for her to follow in her mother's footsteps. And, as the (Minor) Goddess of Anarchy, her nature did dictate that she cause chaos, although she learned to express that in lesser ways. To top off the unfortunates for Anya, she was cursed by the wife of her father, because of the fact that she is a very obvious sign of that affair with her mother, being the spitting image of him. She got a lot of bad breaks in life. But she didn't sit and mope, she kept on trucking. So, I have to say that Anya turned out to be a favorite for me in this series (after reading the first three books). She was funny, and turned out to be quite a good asset and companion to them, despite her wise-cracks. And she's one heck of a warrior. Lucien could do worse than have a woman who completely adored him, even to the point of being willing to give up her freedom in more than one crucial way.

Now, Lucien. He's my favorite Lord so far. I doubt that will change. He's the strong, silent type, and wonderfully broody. He's actually pretty honorable, considering the murky past that the Lords have. To think he scarred himself horribly to keep women away from him after his love died when he couldn't save her. But his scars ending up being a draw to Anya, among other things. Many times, he was insecure, thinking she was just making fun of him, or using him, because of his lack of looks. His insecurity endeared him to me. I like that a hero can be the insecure one in a book. I get so tired of the men having all the power in romance novels. It was nice to see that he was the vulnerable one in some ways. Although I was glad that Anya didn't take advantage of it.

The Darkest Night was a little bit flawed as a start to the series, (definitely not as strong as this book), so I was very pleasantly surprised (although I think Gena Showalter is a very good author) how much I enjoyed this book. I had heard bad things about Anya, and I was wary, because I don't care for hardened, obnoxious heroines. However, she didn't come off to me that way. Despite her wise-cracks and her seeming self-absorption, I saw the little girl who was treated so poorly by the others on Olympus, and her yearning to feel special, and to never be under another person's thumb. I think that made her very identifiable to me. And the fact that she was so crazy about Lucien definitely endeared her to me.

This book was chock-full of sexy romance that tugged at my heart, crazy action, great world-building, and interesting characters. It totally invested me in this series. I can see myself rereading this book sooner rather than later, because I really loved Lucien and Anya as a couple. Also the secondary story with Paris really had me sympathizing with him, when I was rather turned off by him in the first book. I have to say that Ms. Showalter is really coming through with this interesting concept. This was definitely a five star read for me. And to those who have been put off by the bad impression that some readers have of Anya, I'd say give her a chance. She's actually a fun, likeable heroine, in my opinion. (less)

THE DARKEST KISS is book 2 in the exciting and original Lords Of The Underworld series and it's absolutely fantastic. Gena Showalter has outdone herself here, further developing previous characters and sub-plots she has also created my new favourite couple in Lucian and Anya. Their story is filled with raw emotion, tons of sexual tension and non-stop adventure. There are also several other immortals stories taking place at the same time which instead of distracting from only added to the tension in a very JR Ward kind of way. I never knew what was going to happen next and will absolutely be doing a re-read as well as continuing on with this amazing series.

Lucian, as one of the Lords Of The Underworld is the warrior bonded with the demon of death. As such he is responsible for removing the souls of the dead and transporting them to either heaven or hell. (Surprise, most don't want to go) Of his fellow immortals he is the most in control but also the most serious and sombre. Having distanced himself long ago he has no choice but to do what the gods command of him.

This book starts out with a bang as Lucian meets the Goddess of Anarchy in a nightclub. Anya doesn't mince words or actions in the fact that she wants Lucian and no other will do. He doesn't understand what a modelesque looking goddess could possibly see in him because he's not much to look at these days, having permanently disfigured himself to make sure no woman ever looked his way again. Anya however is a wicked girl and finds the scars sexy, wanting to run her tongue over them. After their first meeting Lucian is unable to keep the teasing, sexy spitfire out of his thoughts. She was able to make him smile and even laugh for the first time in hundreds of years and that kiss... It's a damn shame that the leader of the Titans has just ordered him to kill her with the added incentive that if he fails his fellow immortals will suffer the consequences.

So the chase begins, with Lucian trying desperately not to feel anything for Anya and her enjoying the fact that he's been ordered to kill her because it only makes the game of seducing him that much more fun. The duo `flash' (dematerialize) to exotic locations trading barbed words and having the occasional swordfight along the way all as part of their amazing foreplay. Ultimately they join forces which only complicates things further because Anya never mentioned her own curse, that of being unable to consummate a relationship.

I couldn't put this book down and found Anya to be hilarious, a sort of a female version of Bones from Jeanine Frosts Night Huntress series. It was refreshing to get a heroine who is not helpless, insecure and whiney but instead cheeky, aggressive and confident, never apologising for who she is. Lucian in turn is an alpha male but not in the typical chest beating way he's thoughtful, compassionate, loyal and self sacrificing. Yeah I loved these two and highly recommend. (less)

I enjoyed this book much more than the last. Anya is very much my favourite character right now. She was fiery, funny, sexy and such a strong lead female. Her past was interesting; being the daughter of the Goddess of Lawlessness and being treated badly because of that. I know some would dislike her personality, but I thought she really did shine. At times in some books I read, I wouldn’t care what happened to the lead character, but I really cared for Anya. She is a character to look up to, really, for being herself even though hated by many for it.

Lucien I also cared for. Poor, tortured Lucien. Finding out how he got his scars was a sad story and I found myself hoping for a happy ending. In the first book Lucien probably didn’t stand out for many, but from the start he interested me. Being the one that opened Pandora’s Box and Captain of the Guard in Olympus, he still serves as a leader for the Lords. And they could have a no better one. He is a strong, unrelenting warrior. I was sad finding out about his insecurities, but Anya soon sorted them out.

I loved the sexual tension between them and the violence that erupted. It was exciting and very hot. The romance, when it came about, was nice and I felt happy for them. The talking during love scenes wasn’t as bad as the first, but still there and still the same. “More?” and “You like?” and when they finally admitted their love, it was “Love you” through their love making. Dear God people, more screaming and less talking!

Both these well written characters made the book; however, I found it dragged on at times. I found I was quite bored when things were told over and over again – “I like him / her but it can’t get serious, we can’t be together and so on and so forth”. It got to the point all I was reading was the words BLAH BLAH BLAH.

I was so happy when Paris’ short story started, but it was quite a sad one, which made my liking for Paris stronger. What happened will effect him in a big way, perhaps even ruin his life. I'm glad to know that book No.8 is his story and hopefully he will finally get what he wants.

The story throughout was interesting. The Lords are now searching for artefacts which will lead to Pandora’s Box. It gives a bit of an adventure. And Cronus, well, I think my hate for him is normal. Stupid God King. I am sure he will pop up again in future books and be as cruel and annoying.

I will continue reading this series, as I really want to know what happens to the characters.

My, my, my. I don't know how I'm going to wait another month for the final book in this trilogy by Gena Showalter. I really enjoyed the first book "The Darkest Night" (see my review), but I just loved "The Darkest Kiss". The Goddess of Anarchy (her friends call her Anya) has a thing for one of the Lords of the Underworld. He's got intriguing and mismatched eyes, scars all over his body, he's quiet, brooding, and never cracks a smile. And she should know... she's been stalking him for weeks.

One problem. Anya is on the new god-king's, Cronus's hitlist. And he's just realised she's trying to court Death so he orders him to take her soul. Eek!

Anya is playful, feisty and sexy. She won't go down without a fight or a taste of the man she's obsessed with. Hilarious escapades ensue, I especially like the chase involving the gay strip club:

"Ready to have some fun?" She didn't give him time to answer. Weighed down with the chains, she flashed to a busy street in New York-fingers crossed he would be run over - then to a gay strip club in Italy-fingers crossed he would be groped - then to a zoo in Oaklahoma-fingers crossed the elephant shit was ripe.

"Enjoy," she muttered with relish. Anya flashed one more time, back to where she'd begun: his home in Greece. Lucien was still following her trail. Lightning quick, she hid the chains under the bed and palmed her Taser.

When she straightened he was there, just in front of her. Her breath caught. He was scowling, teeth bared and sharp, Death glowing in his eyes. He had a bleeding cut on his leg and he smelled like shit.

Her nose wrinkled. "Step in something?" she asked innocently.

"That I did not mind." He took a menacing step toward her. "What I did mind was being hit by a cab, then landing on the lap of a naked man. With an erection, Anya. He had an erection."

ROFL! Gena Showalter is a comedic genius!

On a more serious note, I felt bad for Paris (Promiscuity). It seems he's lost his chance at freedom from his demon. He was right about Sienna and his reaction to her. No one seems to realise his subdued behaviour is him grieving. Even though they have their brothers they're still alone. It's so sad.

Anyway, my only problem was that Anya lost. I wanted them to win but she still had to give up her security and is now vulnerable to Cronus. That angered me but I guess you can't always win. That's not realistic. (less)

This is the second installment in Showalter's "Lords of the Underworld" trilogy, and while I gave the first book an extra half-star, I believe I'll leave this one at four. Well I certainly enjoyed this book much better than the first in the series, and think that I will now continue on with the series so I am glad I decided to give it another chance.

I think I just enjoyed Lucian and Anya's characters much more than Maddox and Ashlyn. They seemed so complex and they each had so many layers to the emotions and actions. Lucien was not a bad hero. I did not like that he was weak or losing for most of the book. He is a warrior. An elite warrior. Not just some tough dude who can fight. In some scenes enemies are quickly disposed of and in others it's a battle. Come on now. Maybe I got used to Violence but Lucien seemed a little rusty. I liked his first reaction to Anya (not her behavior) and he said something about how she smelled like strawberries and cream. Totally reminded me of in BDB when one of the brothers (Wrath?) was like, "I can smell your fear boy!". OK, totally unrelated but I loved it!

In reading other reviews, I noticed that a lot of people loved Anya. I wasn't one of those people. I did like her some times but for the most part she annoyed me and other times she had me rolling my eyes at her. Grow up! I wanted to scream that at her. I settled for muttering it to myself and making a poorly spelled note in my kindle. Other times I wanted to talk to her about self respect. A few hundred (thousand) years has passed girl! I think it's safe enough to drop the act and just be you. I have problems with characters that seem like they try too hard and she definitely tried too hard.

And what happened to the rest of the warriors? I think I missed that from the first book. In this one everyone seemed so separate, I felt like there was a disconnect, and that there was no bond between them. It seemed like all the main warriors in this book were left hanging or forgotten. Well guess what, I didn't forget! Mostly the book focused on Anya and Lucien pining and saying the exact opposite of what the felt. I really wanted to scream "Oh for goodness sakes!" (It's true). But after a while it did grow on me and I thought it was cute. Then it annoyed me again.

Something I forgot to mention in my review of the first book was the butterfly tattoo. When I was reading the book and they first described the butterfly tattoo, I admit that my mental picture was awful. I kept thinking of a HUGE version of what you'd find on some girls back or her ankle. And that it was turquoise for some reason. I kept thinking that that was not hot. Butterfly tattoos on men? Uh, no! But then I actually looked at the cover and saw that they were TRIBAL butterfly (still, a butterfly?) that actually looked really nice. And if anyone could pull off a butterfly tattoo, it'd be these guys.

Remember earlier how I mentioned that this book was absurd? Well, it was. How ridiculous is it for someone to be DYING from a gunshot wound to the stomach, numerous contusions, bruises, and cuts AND burns so bad that most of your skin is charred black - and you find the time to "you know what"? WHAT?!?! Absurd and maybe they enjoyed it, but I sure didn't. I was kinda grossed out. Ewww. And don't get me started on some of the fight scenes (all of a sudden you're this brave fighter now?), dialog, and again fight scenes (rolling into people like bowling balls??). Ugh!

Even though I was sorely disappointed in this one, I am still reading the next book in the series. I have no self control and no alternatives right now. I have to know what will happen. And seriously, some of the other warriors are just so interesting.

Lastly, your cover lies because the guy on the cover looks NOTHING like Lucien was described in the book. Ummmm, not a single scar is on that dude! Lies!(less)

Now this was what I was hoping for in this series. The first book was good, but it was setting up so much for the rest of the series that it took away from the action and the story. But this book was fantastic, wildly entertaining, sexy, and everything I was hoping for in the first book.

This book is about Lucien (Keeper of Death) and Anya (the Goddess of Anarchy). We met Anya at the end of the last book and I decided quickly that I loved her to pieces. This book only made me like her more. I think this is the first book where I actually liked the female more than the male. Don't get me wrong, I loved Lucien. He's the classic tortured sexy man that I'm always tripping over, but I just loved Anya for some reason. I thought her character was fantastic and her personality was addicting. She's smart, funny, sexy and not the least bit annoying.

In this story, it starts out with Anya watching Lucien. Apparently, even before helping out Maddox and Ashlyn in the last book, she became a wee bit obsessed with the mysterious warrior and has been watching him for awhile. This was her reasoning for helping out in the first place and now she wants to seduce him. Lucien, however, being the tortured soul he is, wants nothing to do with it. He's felt love's sting in the past and wants to stay far away from the hurt it brings. So, he pushes her away at every turn. But Anya is persistent and she does not give up easily...

In addition to Lucien and Anya's story, we get to hear from Reyes and how he's doing. Aeron is still trying to kill Danika and her family, so Reyes is doing all he can to prevent that from happening. Paris also has a bit of story in this one and some interesting things happen to him. I'm not sure what will come from that story line and I was surprised with where Gena took it -- not what I was expecting at all. So we shall see what happens with him in the future books.

Overall, I thought this was a solid story. What I liked is that, instead of being just about Anya and Lucien, the story fanned out to encompass the other warriors. This is what I like to see in a series. It sets up the upcoming books quite nicely, gives us a little break here and there from the larger story, and it's the best way to build characters in a series. So this was super entertaining with a lot of action, adventure, and romance. I'm really looking forward to finally hearing Reyes and Danika's story next so I'm jumping right into it!(less)

I'm really loving this series so far. Although I was a little surprised and hesitant with the pairing for Lucien. My first reaction was 'really?'. I'm really loving this series so far. Although I was a little surprised and hesitant with the pairing for Lucien. My first reaction was 'really?'. Anya g-ddess of Anarchy with Lucien, an immortal warrior possessed by the demon of Death. Interesting combo. She was first introduced in the previous book and she seemed fun and quite colorful but I couldn't take her seriously with the way she acted. But she grew on me and I loved the transformation she made in this. I loved how deeply they fell for each other. We got to see a side of both Anya and Lucien we didn't see previously. Lucien in particular. He is the the most self-reserved quiet controlled warrior of the group so to see the gentle playful endearingly sweet and tender side come out was just enthralling. I can't use that word enough when it comes to these warriors. There's just something about them that just sucks you in completely.

I loved Lucien and seeing him struggle to do the right thing and protect those he loves while falling for Anya. I really liked how protective he was of Anya and willing to do anything to make her happy. Plus that deeply insecure vulnerable side of him just pulled at my heart and made me melt. I was glad he found someone like Anya who loved and desired all of his glorious self as he was. They made quite a pair and the last few chapters and conclusion sold me completely on them.

Anya is not your typical heroine. She's got a lot of fire sass and sarcastic wit to go with it. She's not for everyone. I'm not big on female characters who get a kick or rush out of killing and being brutal but here it was understandable. It's part of her curse and who she is. What I liked is that I got to see a really vulnerable surprisingly innocent side of her that I didn't expect. That part warmed me up to her. And I loved how fiercely protective and loyal she became of Lucien.

And the side stories and set ups for the other warriors is making me even more impatient to read the next books. Paris just broke my heart and I'm praying and hoping Showalter doesn't pair him up with who I think she will. Please NO. The women he encountered in this book I did not like. I just got a niggling feeling that that is where it's going. The set up and cues were all there. Ugh. I really hope not. Paris deserves better then that. Speaking of which Reyes makes me want to pull my hair out and give him a hug at the same time. I love that guy so much I still wish he was paired with someone else. I'm really not looking forward to his book. I'm dreading it to be honest. I really want to read his story but I'm not a fan of Danika. I'm going to have to find the energy to plow through that book without wanting to scream and pull my hair out like a psycho. I HATE who the author has paired him with. I'm hoping my opinion changes once I read the book.

Anyways I hope to see more sneak peaks of Lucien and Anya in the other books to see where they are. It was also great seeing Ashlyn and Maddox in this so adorable seeing them all lovey dovey. lol

The only negative for me is I wished the ending wasn't so abrupt. That's a pet peeve of mine, I just find endings really rushed and falling short when something climactic happens then the dramatic conclusion is wrapped up in a few pages. Here it was done literally in the last two pages. Come on!! I can't say more without giving it away but given what happens to Anya at the end and what she does to for Lucien, how he ends up reversing the wrong was really abrupt and just unrealistic. It was a little 'huh? that's it?' moment for me. 4.5 stars for me.

The Darkest Kiss is the second installment in the Lords of the Underworld series and it was another good one. I liked the first book because it introduced us to the amazing Lore Showalter created, but the romance lacked sincerity. The Darkest Kiss though put the Lore a bit on the back burner and offered a full blown romance to enjoy! Don’t get me wrong, our demon-possessed heroes are still on a quest to freedom, fighting Hunters and battling their inner demons, but the romance between Lucien and Anya take the front row and I enjoyed it.

Lucien and Anya’s relationship is doomed from the start, what with Chronus asking him to kill her from the get go. Lucien has been attracted to her since she helped his brother Maddox at the end of the first book and she’s been stalking him since Chronus threatened her to send him after her, Lucien’s scars and demeanor growing on her. Their first meeting in the flesh was electric, but Lucien can’t believe she’d be attracted to his damaged body and is convinced she’s playing him. Both of them have serious self-confidence and trusting issues which makes for some seriously entertaining courting. They spend their time pushing each other away, trying to kill each other, yet kissing with fiery passion. Both of them extremely attracted to the other, yet unwilling to give in, keeping actual sex scenes to a minimum level but passion levels sky high.

As I mentioned before, the series plot arc took a background role in this installment and this book’s focus revolved around Lucien & Anya. Will they end up killing each other? Will they succumb to the passion? Will Anya cave in and offer Chronus what he wants to save her life? How would they trick the god to get out of this mess unscathed? The whole story is about this huge dilemma and I have to say I was really surprised with the outcome.

On a side note, I really like that the model on the cover as mismatched eyes like Lucien, but where are his scars? He is suppose to scare women away, yet he is all pretty on the cover.

I truly like this series, but I have to say, I don’t enjoy it as much as the Black Dagger Brotherhood or the Immortals After Dark series. It’s definitely worth getting your hands on though if you like romance and some Greek mythology. The Lore is really what set this series apart from others of the same genre and I really like it!

I had many doubts about this book. There is a balance of what is good and what is bad (well, for me) in Gena Showalter's books, and this one is like the previous one, just a tiny bit better, so it got a better grade.

The main thing that bugs me is the sex dialogue because it is just something that makes me cringe. It was funny, all those one-word sentences, but after a couple of heated scenes with that kind of talk, you just have to put a finger on your forehead and ask yourself - is this really something that a great author would fall on when such things are described? I seriously don't know how to answer that question.

What appeals to me the most is the world. It is simple, yet at the same time so complex. Some scenes are predictable, but some have the potential to blow you off your feet, so the former ones don't even bother you in the end. Greek mythology is used very good in this book, and although it has been a long time since I read about the Olimpians, I find it fascinating like I'm reading everything for the first time. Showalter has a way with giving us adventure, and she does it very good.

There are loopholes that were left for the future books. For example, Paris's and Reyes's love lives are dug into a bit deeper to make us want to read the sequels, and even though that is very sneaky of the authors and the publishers, making us want to buy the next book, I have to give one round of applause because it was really well done in this book - there was enough to pique our interests, but not for us to figure out exactly what will happen.

All in all, I will continue reading. Nothing has killed my interest in the books, after all, a little laughter in the bedroom never killed anyone.(less)

For such a strong and fierce warrior his confidence was shot to hell. He kept going on about being ugly and how no one would ever be able to love him. It was heartbreaking! He's a total Hunk!

Anya, the Goddess of Anarchy, has been watching the Lords for a while now. Cronus the God king threatened to have them kill her if she didn't hand over the All Key. But Anya being Anya ignored the asshat and introduced herself to the sexy Lords just for shits and giggles. But only one of them caught her attention, and her heart - Lucien. Anya then went out of her way to get her little claws into the keeper of Death, no matter what. I have to say it was Anya who made this book for me. I love her I'll-do-whatever-I-want-and-you-cant-stop-me-attitude. She says what she wants and doesn't give a rats ass who she offends. She's hilarious! Her love for Lucien however is what made me love her even more. Even though he was out to kill her, and scared beyond belief, she didn't let it faze her. She was determined to get her man - and as we all know, she always gets what she wants. LOL.

Another great read from Mrs. Showalter! Once again I found myself glued to the pages of this book. As with the previous one it was packed full of action, suspense, love and betrayal. And lets not forget Gena's own brand of humor. I love the way the Lord's talk to each other, and as I said before Anya is bloody hilarious. There are some great scenes in here, ones that had me all teary eyed and others that had me cussing! I swear I got all annoyed at the start of the book when poor Lucien was doubting Anya's attraction to him - and his so called friends agreed!! Bad Lords!! However, I loved Anya's constant bids to turn him on and prove her attraction to him.

My favorite part of the book has got to be the scene in which Lucien attacks Anya and she comes back in a rage ready bust his head. But, of course she ends up in his bed instead. And ohh..... ain't that the yummiest scene ever! Anya gives all her trust to Lucien, and he proves himself worthy of it. Aww... And I swear I peed my pants laughing when Strider interrupted their wee fondling session. Anya freaked and flashed - leaving Lucien chained to the bed naked, and Strider takes a few snaps on his phone to share with the other Lords! Brill!! LOL.

We also continue to get wee glimpses into the other Lord's lives. By this stage Aeron has lost the plot, and Reyes is on a mission to save Danika from him. Paris meets the woman of his dreams, and has to suffer an unbearable loss at the hands of the Hunters. Bastards!! And Maddox and Ashyln have some amazing news to share!! You'll totally have to read the book to see what I'm talking about. So go on!! Grab a copy!

She was instrumental in releasing Maddox, his fellow Lord of the Underworld, from a long standing curse and therby in setting free Lucien from participating in the Keeper of Violence's (Aka Maddox) curse as well. (See Previous book, The Darkest Night)

Ever since The Lords hit Anya's radar she's been intrigued by them- Lucien in particular. After following him around unseen- and falling even more in lust with him- she decided it was time to make herself known.

Lucien is sure she's setting him up- after all, what would a gorgeous goddess such as herself want with a scarred and tortured immortal like him?

To make things even more difficult for Anya, Cronos, King of the Titans as well as King of the Gods ever since the Titans overthrew the Greek God's and imprisoned them, has decided the minor Goddess of Anarchy has something he wants. But instead of taking care of the problem himself, he orders the Keeper of Death to destroy her- or his brothers will suffer the consequences.

Lucien is determined that not one more of his fellow Lords will go the way of Aeron, Keeper of Wrath- the last Lord of the Underworld who defied Cronos's order.

Will their attraction be enough to defeat the circumstances set against them- or will they destroy each other in their desire to protect what's most precious to each of them?

Guess you'll have to read it to find out.

Although I liked Maddox and Ashlyn's story better (The Darkest Night)- okay I liked Ashlyn better as a heroine; Anya was a little too wise cracky- it's still a great read. Lucien is stoic and oh so yummy, as any romance hero needs to be, of course.

I liked this book, but didn’t love it. I only had problems with the heroine, Anya, the goddess of Anarchy. She was a very hard character for me to like. She was obnoxious, sarcastic (which I normally love, but here it felt forced), and she was almost a compulsive liar.

This is the story of Lucien (Death, leader of the Lords), who has self inflected scares on his face and most of his body after he lost the first and only love of his life. He doesn’t allow anyone to get too close to him personally, especially women; his goal is to keep him away either with his looks or his unflattering honesty. Anya is not deterred. She wants Lucien more than anyone, and she’ll do whatever it takes to get him, despite her curse of not being able to allow a man to penetrate her unless she wants to bind herself to that same man for all eternity- whether he wants her later or not.

Anya was cursed because of her mother (Dysnomia, the goddess of Lawlessness) had laid with a mated god (Tartarus), and it was Tartarus’ wife, Themis (the goddess of Justice) who cursed Anya. Anya was also imprisoned for killing the Captain of the Guards because he tried to rape her. She escaped because her father gave her the All-Key, which allows Anya to escape any type of imprisonment. However, the person who has the All-Key binds with it, and they can only freely give it to someone else, it cannot be taken from them. And once it’s given up that person’s memories and powers vanish.

The plot in this story is that Cronus, a Titan, and current king of the gods orders Lucien to kill Anya. So, there is a lot of back and forth with the two of them, which I think it supposed to be witty and entertaining, but falls a little flat. The Lords of the Underworld are in search of some godly artifacts that when all are obtained would allow them to find Pandora’s Box. They are searching for: the All-Seeing Eye, the Cage of Compulsion, the Cloak of Invisibility, and the Paring Rod. Aeron (Wrath) escaped his imprisonment in the basement of his own house in Budapest with the other Lords. His friends locked him up to keep him from killing a family of innocent women that the gods wanted him to kill in the previous book, The Darkest Night. Reyes (Pain) doesn’t want Aeron free, and goes after him because one of the women that Aeron is supposed to kill is Danika, and Reyes has some very strong feelings for her. Paris (Promiscuity) gets into some trouble from some Hunters when he is drained of power. He is tricked by Sienna, a Hunter, and imprisoned by them. However, Paris is so weak from lack of women that he is dying. In order to keep him from dying Sienna is ordered to sleep with Paris. Sienna is plain, but Paris and his demon want her anyways. Afterwards, when Paris is strong, he escapes taking Sienna with him. The Hunters are chasing him and shooting at him, no longer care if they kill him and release his demon. Paris finds himself ready for Sienna again, which has never happed because he has the demon of Promiscuity. Unfortunately, Sienna is hit by a stray bullet and dies. When Paris gets back to Budapest he won’t talk about what happened.

So, Anya and Lucien are hot on the trail of the Cage of Compulsion. Lucien is weakening everyday that he doesn’t fulfill Cronus’ order to kill Anya. Anya finally gave herself to Lucien fully, fulfilling her curse to the only man she loves, which only strengthens him for a short time. They come to the cave of the Hydra and see the Cage. Lucien has to fight in spirit form after one of Anya’s “friends” (William) tries to kill him. However, Lucien and Anya defeat the Hydra and claim the Cage. But, Lucien cannot re-enter his own body and his spirit disappears. Anya cries to Cronus that she is finally willing to negotiate her All-Key. He appears and Cronus agrees to re-bind Lucien and his spirit and heal his body if Anya gives him the key. She does after she flashes herself into the Cage of Compulsion, because she know all her memories will be lost, and she doesn’t want to leave Lucien, who is sleeping next to the Cage on his bed.

Lucien awakens to find Anya in the Cage of Compulsion yelling to be set free. He quickly realizes what she did for him. For four days Lucien doesn’t know what to do to bring Anya’s memories back. Then finally he orders her to remember (since she is in the Cage of Compulsion) and it works! She has her memories, but unfortunately not her powers, which Lucien hopes he’ll be able to get back sometime for her.

I enjoyed this one more than the first!

I loved how Showalter wrote Anya’s character. As the greek goddess of anarchy, Anya truly acted like a greek goddess; from the stomping of a foot when she didn’t get her way, to pitching a fit if called a ‘minor’ goddess, to the way she changes her mind and is constantly after what she wants, the portrayal of a Greek Goddess hit just the right spot.

Wow! Book #2 in the Lords of the Underworld series and I am anxiously awaiting book #3 to come out (July 2008). So far, it looks like the series should be read in order as characters are in the books as minor or major parts. This little book packed a whollop of imagination. Thought I "figured" out what would happen and was pleasantly surprised when I was...wrong. Nice twists and turns in the plot and how the story unfolded. Didn't see that coming!
