A remarkable novel about one of the most important, and loving, relationships in Gary Paulsen's life.

This is a very cute story about a young boy growing up in a different time. He lives in the city with two drunks for parents and spends most of his time working finding as many ways as possible to make money. One summer his grandma asks him to come work on a farm she's working on as a cook so they can bond. At first he finds the new farm strange. Gunnar and Olaf own the farm and often times stop and enjoy the scenery, take their time, and enjoy what they're doing. The young boy is used to workin...more

Alida's Song by Gary Paulsen is the sequel to the wonderful Cookcamp. The book begins with a framing story. The boy is now a young man enlisted in the army. He confesses to his grandmother that he's not sure he made the right decision. She then reminds him of the time he came to live with her for a summer at a farm.

The remainder of the novella is set during that summertime. Once again the boy is invited to live with his grandmother. The idea is to give him a safe, loving home during another roug...more

This book tells a very sweet story, and it really reminded me a lot of second hand lions. The descriptions were very wonderful, but i read this book when i was hungry and it was awful because a lot of the descriptions were about food. I love stories of cute old people, because sometimes they are not cute, but in stories like these they always are.

This is a charming story with a sweet ending. However, it really bugged me that Paulsen didn't give themain character a name. He is called "the boy" throughout the book. I found that this kept me from really caring about him. It is a good short story though. Paulsen paints the scenery well.

Very good, but I think it needs some development in the characters Gunnar and Olaf. If it was longer i would be very happy because it feels, and is, really short in the amount of pages. Gary Paulsen describes the setting better than most authors I have read.

Again, Gary Paulsen scores. Read this book and "The Quilt" in just a couple of hours. Both tender stories that move the soul.

This book was a wonderful follow-up to The Cookcamp. I am very impressed with Mr. Paulsen's writing and the way he can communicate such vivid imagery of setting, place, and even feeling.

I found this to be a great book. The young man who is the main character, moves into a farmhouse for the summer where his grandmother works for a couple of older gentlemen. He soons learns that farmlife is much more interesting than city life. Along the way, he becomes a man and learns his grandmother will always be there for him. A great book by Gary Paulsen!

A quick read. Good for young children; especially those trying to get in extra hours for homework. The story is about a young boy who lives with some older gentlemen on a farm; good moral.
Lois
Grandmother brings young boy to farm for summer to save him from the trouble he's getting into by living with alcoholic parents. Straightens him out. Middle grade novel

Although he was never a dedicated student, Paulsen developed a passion for reading at an early age. After a librarian gave him a book to read--along with his own library card--he was hooked. He began spending hours alone in the basement of his apartment building, reading one book after another.

Running away from home at the age of 14 and traveling with a carnival, Paulsen acquired a taste for adve...more
