Kaoru Mori's Shirley is a collection of short stories about maids in Victorian London. The main story is about Shirley, a thirteen-year-old maid for young old maid Bennet Cranley. Bennet places an ad in the newspaper for a maid because she runs a diner and has no time to clean. She comes home from work one day to find Shirley on her doorstep. Shirley is young and chose Bennet because there was no age requirement in her ad. Bennet takes to Shirley quickly; Shirley works hard and makes the home sp...more

After reading Kaoru Mori's Emma series, I just HAD to read Shirley. I haven't read anything of Mori's since last year, and I must say that her beautiful artwork never ceases to amaze me. I was surprised all over again. The beautifuly drawn characters just seem to reach out and pull at my heart strings.

I was quite satisfied with the first couple of chapters. Shirley is just so adorable. Especially in that maid outfit. Uwah~! Anyway, I envy her innocent childish outlook. Oh to be thirteen. She jus...more

If you love maid story without any fan service, you have to read this. There was not even a bit of romance here, nothing. Just some classic slice of life and moe maid and beautiful artwork from Kaoru Mori.

If Kaoru Mori made this in to series, it would have been more interesting. Why did Miss Brenette choose to live alone and how was Shirley's background and all those questions. I would have given this four stars :)

A collection of short stories by Emma author Kaoru Mori, Shirley is a very mellow slice-of-life manga about a 13-year-old maid in turn-of-the-century London.

There's not very much plot, but the artwork is adorable, and Shirley is an endearing character. I will be looking to see if more is done with Shirley in the future.

Absolutely lovely. I hope Emma shows up in this new series, maybe as a mentor to Shirley. That would be perfect!

And the little stories at the end of the book were beautiful (and sometimes heart-wrenching yet light-hearted) as well. CMX handled this publication well. I can't wait to read the rest!

Enjoyable and cute short stories about maids in Victorian England. However it lacks the dramatic punch and tight storytelling of Mori's other work, Emma.

A single story that makes me want more!!! Shirley is a nice girl and diligent! The story is very warm-hearted, you'll never regret reading it

This author could write and illustrate anything set in Victorian England, and I will read it and love it. Beautifully illustrated.

Pretty sure I'm gonna love this manga since I loved "Emma" so much. Super girly/mushy but I admit it! I feed off that stuff!!

I am sure this story is really quite good, but I found the translation terrible... It lost something...

Absurdly cute, or maybe cuter than that.

A compilation of standalone short stories about British maids during the Victorian era. These can be sort of the 'prototype' stories that led to the development of the Emma series.

Mori-sensei clearly still in "learning" phase of her "English Maids" obsession. What this book lacks in generic moe, it makes up for in everything else (hoorah!)

1st time: God, it's good to be back in Kaoru Mori world.

2nd time: I want more! Why has there not been more? It lacks some of the magic of Emma, but I still heart it.
