This volume contains all of Freud's major writings on sexuality. It begins with his revolutionary "Three Essays on the Theory of Sexuality" (1905). It also includes shorter papers on normal and abnormal sexuality, illustrated by numerous examples provided by Freud's own patients. I showed an excerpt of Freud's writing to my friend over lunch earlier this afternoon. The excerpt read like this:

Contact between the child and its carer is, for the child, an endlessly flowing source of sexual stimulation and satisfaction of erogenous zones, particularly since the carer—more generally the mother—bestows upon the child feelings derived from her sexual life, stroking, kissing and rocking the child, and quite clearly taking it as substitute for fully valid sexual object.

How do you rate something like the "Three Essays," which, though by no means enjoyable, signals one of the most significant paradigmatic shifts in thought in the past several centuries--? I gave the book an arbitrary 4 stars. Frankly, I'm no Freud expert; my experience with his work largely comes from feminist readings OF Freud, rather than readings of his text.

Of course these essays are important. From arguing towards a notion of universal perversion to elaborating on the natural sexual precoc...more

I suppose having an idea of how to think about Freud's work is necessary to begin to answer what one can/does/should think about it. And truth be told, I'm not sure how to think about Freud. I will say, though, that reading Freud is a lot more interesting than reading about Freud. Best to go right to the source, no? Regardless, there is A LOT in here that is as important as the moment Freud's pen touched the page. For one, and you won't read this in any reviews or general talk about this book, i...more

"Moreover, the kiss, one particular contact of this kind, between the mucous membrane of the lips of the two people concerned, is held in high sexual esteem among many nations (including the most highly civilized ones), in spite of the fact that the parts of the body involved do not form part of the sexual apparatus but constitute the entrance to the digestive tract."

I read Freud's Three Contributions to the Theory of Sex and I am cured! The intervening century has done little to dim the essays' lustre. Written in 1905, they are still eminently readable. A lot remained to be studied and discovered, which is why Freud prudently chose to call his essays "contributions".

As a physician, Freud was interested in the body and as a psychoanalyst in the psyche. The magic happened when those two were in dialogue with each other. For instance, Freud explained that con...more

I don't know I don't know. I understand the importance of this work and it lays out some key elements of Freud's work, but it is very abstract. As I'm not the biggest fan of psychoanalysis in the first place it all just sounds a bit silly to me. And, of course, some parts of this of this are just really really outdated and wrong ("If you can't have a vaginal orgasm, you're not doing it right!"). I suppose I (would) prefer Freud's case studies - applied psychoanalysis can be really interesting an...more

Well, these, as the title indicates, three essays are the pioneering ground of the concept of sexuality at that critical time, wherein sexuality was amazingly narrowed and was intentionally hid, but Freud, himself, extended it and brought it to light with the help of his patients. In these three essays, Freud states that the casual definition of sexuality has banned many other versions of the term. 'Inverts', firstly, are what is known now by homosexuals, namely both sexes, male and female. Seco...more

Actually not that much to say about this one. It's obviously groundbreaking and also easy to miss that bc of the straightforwardness of so much of what Freud writes here. Some of the vocabulary ("inversion" especially) can be off-putting and make you think Freud's argument is more conservative than it is. Also, this is another text that you have to work really hard to not read with the millennial self-congratulatory posture so many of us now approach anything written prior to 1990 with. Let your...more

Three Essays… has been a very interesting read and anyone with as much as a passing interest in human sexuality, psychological development and the human condition in general, should go for it irrespective of their pre-notions about Freud.

While Freud's theories are often criticized for being reductionistic (i.e. for reducing love to sex) he himself says, "anyone who looks down with contempt upon psycho-analysis from a superior vantage-point should remember how closely the enlarged sexuality of ps...more

This book was much better than I expected. The KEY to this book is to understand Freud's use of the words he chooses. In the 21st century, we live in a hyper-sexual world; words have double meanings and are heavy on innuendo. For example, when we use the word "libido," it is heavy with meaning and judgement. When Freud uses this word it is merely to convey "sexual drive." If you understand his words have a very clinical meaning, then you can appreciate Freud's ideas, and stop seeing them through...more

In these stories Freud explores the case of "little Hans" and his textbook illustration of the principles of psychoanalysis. Or perhaps I should say the psychoanalytic interpretation of the evidence presented and provided by Hans' family (in which the father was an early and staunch supported of Freud's ideas).

I had to read this for my class in psychoanalysis, so I read this along with several other sources explaining and making this case for psychoanalysis as a whole. I won't blindly disparage...more

“Freud believed that the human being is an animal in conflict.”

– Martin Bergmann, NYU psychology professor.

Okay, let’s agree that Freud had some significant blindspots and/or foibles. He was bad to make sweeping generalizations based on a sample of one — that is, himself. Namely he kinda-sorta had a crush on his mom — who, admittedly, was a bit of a looker in her day. Therefore, according to Freud, the Oedipus Complex is the psychological ground zero for all humans everywhere. He also admitted t...more

Laced with anti-feminist assertions and generously peppered with inherent contradictions , which can bore you to death , and at the next instant , rudely awaken you with the very ground-breaking , pretty repulsive but undeniable foundations of thought which swept the world by a storm , Freud's seminal work caters to an esoteric audience , although being one of the few books which bought a paradigmatic shift in the history of the world . This book is the mother of all the revolutionary ideas on s...more

و...more

To Freud's credit he was talking about homosexuality / inversion and children's sexuality when others were not. He destabilizes the myth of childhood innocence with his theories on infantile sexuality. But in essay III, he seems to rely more on Victorian convention (and why not, it was the time) when talking about teachers / caregivers and naughty children, civil society and "dirty" women, and husbands and wives. But I wonder if Freud might rely more on convention at this point for his explanati...more

It's hard to give this a real rating since nothing in this book has any scientific explanation or backing. That and his vaguely heteronormative, misogynistic tones are probably "okay" for his time period, but has since been proven to be wrong.

I just want to know if there were ever actual women who bought the idea of penis envy.

Again, I find some ideas that were probably ahead of his time (just a handful), others that just demonstrate the scientific state of the study of human & child development - both physically and psychologically - of Freud's time that make me wonder how his theories would change if he were writing today, and then there's others that I suspect stem from the culture of the time/place he's writing in that make me roll my eyes. Reading with the cultural bias of my physical and cultural background,...more

Even though it lacks the most complete version of his research on female sexuality, lecture 33 "Femininity", this is probably the best collection you can read (if you find it) on the subject. Freud was right about many things, and very wrong about some others. Still, his writing is fascinating. Make sure to read more recent psychoanalysts' works and critiques on Freud, since they take his research many steps further from the shortcomings of traditional psychoanalysis/psychology.

This book is not really much use to someone wanting to find out about modern psychology's take on sexuality, but it does have the bases for some continuing insights. Also, if one is interested in the medicalization of sexuality as a discourse (as Foucault outlines in The History of Sexuality, Vlume 1) this is the best example of that discourse.

The book can be hard for modern readers to handle, and one has to contuinously remind oneself that it was written in 1905. The pathologizing of homosexual...more

Sigmund Freud, the father of psychoanalysis, was a physiologist, medical doctor, psychologist and influential thinker of the early twentieth century. Working initially in close collaboration with Joseph Breuer, Freud elaborated the theory that the mind is a complex energy-system, the structural investigation of which is the proper province of psychology. He articulated and refined the concepts of...more
