Vivian Vande Velde is basically my hero. She is a master at taking traditional fairy-tale-like themes and making them fresh and totally unique. Companions of the Night (1995) does that for the vampire story.

Kerry’s little brother, Ian, had a simple request: drive to the laundromat to retrieve Ian’s stuffed bear. Kerry knew all the reasons she should tell Ian no (she had a big test to study for, it was the middle of the night, she only had a driver’s permit and shouldn’t be in a car w...more

Now this is what I mean by a vampire novel. I'm still not sure I buy that the woman is *in love* with the vampire, but it's solved in this novel by the fact that Kerry is a teenager, much less naive than your average 16 yr old perhaps, but still a teenager and therefore prone to crushes and faulty judgement, not to mention that she spends the whole novel in a state of crisis and hyped up nerves and makes her declaration of love when she's just avoided a lot of danger. These are the circumstances...more

As a favour to her younger brother, Kerry drives to the laundromat at night to retrieve his forgotten teddybear. But suddenly the place is rushed by a gang bringing a young man with them who they claim is a vampire. To prove this, they intend to keep him there until sunrise and have him burned by the sunlight. Kerry does not believe them and helps the young man to flee. But soon she must discover that Ethan really is a vampire and now she has to decide wether he is a bloodthirsty monster or not....more

This is one of the best crafted vampire books I've ever read. The hardcover has a much better version of the cover art. I love this book!
Be careful who you help escape from being tied up - they might be getting tied up for good reason, like being a VAMPIRE! Okay, sure, it was at the laundromat, not where you'd expect to find vampires, but it was late at night, and Kerry should have just grabbed her little brother's bear and left, and called the police from the safety of her home. But no, she h...more

(Young Adult Horror) Let's face it, I'm not a fan of the horror genre. I can't even stand scary movies. The other two horror/paranormal books I read for class (Twilight and A Certain Slant of Light) were actually quite enjoyable, but this one is not my cup of tea. A Certain Slant of Light was character-driven and Twilight was character and plot driven, but Companions of the Night was primarily plot-driven. When published in 1995, it won many awards, and I suppose the fast-paced plot with lo...more

okay, i admit. i love teenage-vampiric stories. i find them attractive and amusing. and have in them everything that i want and need to have in a book. and this one didn't disappoint me. i find it much more interesting than the blue bloods. the action was quick and somehow lively. storyline even absorbing, you're eager to finally find out who's the real bad guy. but from my point of view there weren't any, they all had their rational reasons. which was even better. bittersweet ending, which make...more

I really loved the vampires in this book; they actually feel like they've lived for quite some time, as opposed to psychologically being a high school student for centuries. I particularly loved the moral ambiguity of the book, that the threat to Kerry felt real and immediate, and the lack of romanticization. This is what a vampire-human relationship might work out if vampires were real.

One of my favourite vampire books out there. I'm sure many people agree with me on this one.

Each page kept me so absorbed in the story, eager to finish it and find out the ending. When I'd finished the book, I was disappointed that it didn't go on for longer.

The ending was bittersweet, leaving many people hungry for a sequel.

Twilight has inspired me to look for more vampire books, but none can compare so far. Companions of the Night is an action-packed, melodramatic story, but the characters simply don't have the appeal (the "bite") of Bella and Edward. Readers who are looking for lots of action may like this one, but readers who prefer well-developed, compelling characters would do better with Stephenie Meyer's Twilight, New Moon, and Eclipse.

Holy hell, is this book boring for a vampire novel! Characters are completely flat, the "writing," being a perfunctory recording of events, is totally uninspired, and *absolutely nothing happens for chapters and chapters*. Well, a teenage girl drives around with a vampire talking about what they are going to do about her family's abduction. Boring.

Kerry trudges back to the laundromat late at night to retrieve her little brother's stuffed animal, and walks into a kidnapping. She rescues the young man from his captors, but, uh oh! He's a vampire!
She helped him, maybe he won't hurt her. But the men she saved him from might, since now they think SHE's a vampire.
Exciting dangerous fun.

Tightly-written, fresh, and off-beat. With realistic characters instead of caricatures. If you think Stephanie Meyer's fantasy about ridiculous, flat paper dolls who speak in annoyingly overwrought dialogue is good, and that a good young adult series requires lots of glitter and declarations of love, then this is probably not for you.

This was one of my favorite books during High School, even though I didn't really like the ending of it.

It just had an interesting storyline, a young girl thrown into the world of vampires by accident, falling in love with a vampire, but the ending did not come out the way that most vampire novels about young love do.

This was an amazing book and added some controversial and unique characteristics to the image of vampires. The love story is also really developed, but what kept this book from earning a 5-star rating was its terrible, disappointing, and depressing ending. If you want a happy ending, don't read this book.

I read this book in one night after a friend recommended it. I really really enjoyed it but was a little frustrated with the ending. Like most of the Author's other books, I was left wishing for more information!! Wish there was a sequel!

One of the few really excellent vampire novels out there. The entire plot has so much common-sense and believability working for it, and the characters are so likeable, that I wish it was hundreds of pages longer.

It was a very gripping book. The plot is completely unique. What makes the book really gripping is that you have no idea of what will happen next. Love it up till the last chapter, then i hated the ending.

I thought that the story did kinda drag on for most of the book, but the very ending made me scream and cry. I guess that was just the lead up to it or something...great book.

I didn't think this book was going to be as good as it was. It was a very quick read if you're looking for something fast.

It made me happy :)
