Shannon Hale has yet to disappoint me. Her writing is a little slow at first (even she concedes that she sucks at making a novel grab the reader from the get-go), but there's something extremely satisfying about her writing style, even when it is being slow as all get-out. She manages to make this story interesting even when it is being entirely predictable (which only happened a few times, and even then she convincingly created enough doubt that the predictable thing was about to happen that it...more

Shannon Hale was a recent golden find (despite the fact that several of her books have been published over the years) for myself. The language is beautiful and poetic, the characters believable and the plots extended. These is exactly the stories I seek, because they contain quiet, pensieve and poetic story-telling. Hale's characters, sub-plots and language that make this book, and hence the series (Books of Bayern), worthy.

I couldn't decide whether to give this book 4 or 5 stars. I debated for way longer than I have time to debate about truly unimportant things like this.
I struggled a bit through the first part of the book because I was reading the really exciting part of another book concurrently. (Why did I start a book before I finished my first one? I don't know, okay? I just wanted to.) I was really frustrated with the heroine from the first Book of Bayern (Isi/Ani) because she accomplished this incr...more

I feel a bit like I was expecting a rich, delicious, European chocolate bar and instead I got a plain ol’ Hershey’s. Not that there is anything wrong with a Hershey’s, but how could I really enjoy it when I was expecting so much more? I was so disappointed in “Enna Burning”. I freely admit, it was clearly a case of expecting too much based on the previous novel, but really, how could I not? “Goose Girl” was just too darn good! The poetic beauty from “Goose Girl” was nowher...more

This book is a continuation of The Goose Girl; it's the story of Enna who was a friend of Ani's in The Goose Girl. Enna finds a power of her own, equal to Ani's power over wind, the power of fire. Her indecision regarding the moral way to use this power is set against the backdrop of impending war between her own kingdom of Bayern and Tira.

According to Goodreads, two stars translates to "it was ok" which is exactly how I felt about this. I actually put it down 3/4 into it and came back to it a week and a half later. I just lost interest. I liked Isi/Ani from Goose Girl and her character development a lot more than Enna & her development. Enna didn't particularly engage me as a character; I found myself more drawn to the familiarity of former characters like Isi, Finn, and Razo. The "magic" or &q...more

Shannon Hale continues the story of GOOSE GIRL in this intense companion book. She also continues her trend of writing books that keep me up late, desperate to finish and see how things end.
This book reinforced why I find Hale an appealing YA author: she writes books that don't shy away from difficult decisions or harsh realities. At the same time, she doesn't seem to write to thrust the reader in the way of difficult decisions or harsh realities. They are just part of the story. She giv...more

Enna Burning takes up a little after the Goose Girl leaves off. Enna has returned to the forest and is living with her brother. She still keeps in close contact with her city friends, especially Isi and Finn. Suddenly the country is attacked and thrust into war and Enna goes along with Isi, Geric, her friends, and the other soliders. Her brother has discovered fire power and after he dies on the battlefield, Enna discovers the secret and begins her own internal struggle with the deadly force. It...more

This is the sort of the sequel to The Goose Girl. But it's not a your normal series. You can read either book and completely understand whats going on. Although, I would read Goose Girl first. I actually liked it better than the The Goose Girl, and I liked that book a lot. As I said before, I will have all of Shannon Hale's books on our bookshelf. I love her style of writing. SPOILER ALERT: This one is about Isi's best friend Enna (who we met in The Goose Girl). Isi has the ability to work with ...more

I might like this even better than The Goose Girl. Enna as protagonist is energetic and confused, both of which make it compelling. I've been very big on books with strong friendships lately--or maybe always and I've just become conscious of it--and the best part of Enna Burning is the amazing connection that Enna and Isi have. On top of that, though, too, is the bigger group friendship between Enna, Isi, Finn, and Razo. It's interesting that Geric isn't quite included i...more

I would have liked this book better if it weren't set in the battling for the king genre. I'd have liked a more creative world. The world that was there was wonderfully rendered because Hale is a really good writer. The opening section of the woman who buries the vellum is very compelling and sharp. Although I didn't agree with all of Enna's motivations, there were a bunch of interesting complexities in the book. Enna being under the enemy's spell and burning from within was especially compellin...more

An enjoyable read. I liked Goose Girl, the first book in this series better, but this is still a good little story.
my daughter could not put this down, and stayed up until the wee hours to finish it.
The story centers around Enna, a forest girl, who befriended Queen Isi in the first novel. Each character has a special talent or gift that causes them both blessing and curse. It is intersting to see the story unfold, and how each character learns to work within the parameters of their gi...more

When I love a book I am reluctant to let the characters go and that's why I often reread books I love. The best is when the author can't either, and starts writing sequels. Enna Burning is the sequel to the Goose Girl. While not as good as The Goose Girl, this book carries on with characters I love so that made it worthwhile for me to read. My main problem with this book is how much the author talks about the fire. After hearing "the heat was all around, filling her up, burning her inside a...more

This is a companion book to Goose Girl and is an originial tale, not a retelling. In this book, Ani's friend Enna takes the lead war as Bayern is faced with an invading army. Ani's gift of wind-speak is grown out of control to the point where it overwhelms her. Enna has learned the secret of fire-speak and uses her gift in battle but must live with the consequences of burning people alive. Her gift is also raging out of control with the war far from over, she, and Bayern need help.

I had to bump this one to the top of my TBR pile, as it is the sequel to The Goose Girl. Enna Burning follows Enna, who befriended Princess Anidori when Ani (also called Isi) was disguised as a goose girl. In this book, Enna learns to talk to fire, as Ani/Isi talks to wind. Enna is another ordinary girl who finds incredible strength within herself and through her friends and does extraordinary things. After almost being consumed by the fire, Enna, with the help of two loyal friends, manages ...more

Although three stars doesn't sound like a lot I did enjoy reading this book, but I liked "The Goose Girl" more. That was probably because Hale took on some weighty topics for a young adult novel (War, burning people, attempted sexual assult?--did anyone else read that when the one soldier came into the tent?) and then she couldn't really do them realistic justice (not that I wanted all the gritty details). I would have like more than "Oh, I burned that person alive; I feel reall...more
