There is an interesting mixture of characters and situations in this book of short stories by Lake. Some I liked better than others, but all were thought provoking. Short stories are tough to get right, and Lake has some skill in bringing the story quickly to life through character, and introducing the scene and plot with enough detail to be vivid and yet not too much to weigh down the brevity of the tale.
