This story drew me in quickly as I couldn't stop laughing as I read. This story was so true to life. I, too, was the daughter of a building contractor and my dad was one of the original "House-Flippers" long before it was popular. This is a humorous and touching story about a determined and eager "house-flipper" newbie named Gretchen, who is tired of sitting on the couch watching this popular HGTV show. She wants action. A "House-Flipper" is someone who buys ...more

Gretchen Hanover is a thirty-something kindergarten teacher whose fiance dumped her just before their wedding. After 18 months of consoling herself with ice cream and HGTV, she decides she needs to do something with her life. Her solution? To flip a house, just like it's done on HGTV. She convinces her dad to co-sign on a short-term loan and she purchases a disaster of a house.
Gretchen's dad, in a bit of matchmaking, convinces her to hire his carpenter friend, Noah, to help the project...more

I picked this book up in the church library because it looked "cute," and I needed a book to keep me occupied for an hour. And, cute it was. Totally predictable with kind of a gag ending.
Here's my question: If this is considered "Christian Fiction," shouldn't it follow Biblical principles? She goes WAY into debt, even using her dad as a co-signer and his house as collateral. Then, she maxes out two store credit cards and a personal credit card to flip the house. I...more

A humorous, faith-based story about Gretchen who is recovering from a broken engagement by watching HGTV and eating Ben & Jerry's ice cream. Finally she decides she needs to get out and try to find a new home for her and her fast growing dog. Eureka! She decides to flip a house. She experiences many ups and downs through this adventure and fears her flip will turn out to be a flop. As she gives the flip to the Lord, many exciting things happen for Gretchen and her beloved Lab.

Rhonda's review: Normally, I don’t enjoy light reading, but this book has all the right elements to be classified a great beach read. Melody Carlson infuses spontaneous and entertaining humor throughout. You’ll find yourself laughing out loud more than once. Her characters have depth and will remind you of your friends. The setting of house flipping is more than accurate. Mrs. Carlson really did her homework to write this novel.

This book was amazingly fun. I thought it was a really good summer read. The events described in this book were easily imagined. I read the whole book in like 3 hours because I wasn't able to put it down. I may be a little biased though because Melody Carlson is one of my favorite authors. I was cheering for the characters all the way through the book and was celebrating for them in the end.

Gretchen is a thirty something kindergarten teacher who was recently dumped just months before her wedding. After drowning her sorrows in Ben and Jerry's and HGTV, she decides flipping a house is just what the doctor ordered. But it's much more work than she thought and the cute carpenter her dad sent to help makes it hard to keep her mind on work.

It took me awhile to read this, not because the book was awful, I just didn't have the time to read like I wanted. It was a nice little story with some Christian themes to it. Not "too heavy, cram it down your throat" style. Would be a good read for a quiet weekend. (Remind me what those are, again!)

I read this for a book club. The first two chapters I thought were going to kill me. But it improved a little and was interesting enough to keep going. It was like 7th Heaven meets Bridget Jones Diary. It was alright. (Sorry, my friend who recommended it! I'm still anxious to read your other books!)

I liked it enough to finish it, but this Christian chick lit was a little dull. The main character didn't have a lot of personality, the love interest was telegraphed from about page 2, and their eventual get-together was pretty darn unrealistic.

Too pat - moved from build-up to conclusion and missed some transition in-between. The addition of religion as a key element in the story-telling shouldn't have impacted the story development in the way that it did....

Before I started reading this book, I assumed that it was centered around the popular shoe by that name. NOT! The main character is so likeable that I was rooting for her throughout the story. Fun read with humor!

I loved this book. It was a quick, easy read. And it was funny. I laughed out loud in several spots. Definitely adding some of her other books to my list!

I thought this book was captivating. A funny way to show how one's views can get askewed, but when they rely on God their vision becomes suddenly clear.

A good quick read. Took me a little while to get involved with the characters. I liked the characters once I was into chapter four or so.

Quick read, light fare. A bit more God than I'm used to seeing but not preachy.
