I generally know enough to avoid second-rate mob books. If you’ve ever been to my home and seen the floor-to-ceiling collection I have of books on Chicago and Jewish organized crime, you’d know I know the material pretty well, well enough to know what not to read at least.

Humble’s book threw me, though. He makes two big claims and a couple of smaller ones that, if he had evidence for, would really be game-changers.

10/7/09 Well I gave it my best shot but couldn't pull it off. So tedious, so lame. Even the interesting moments (few and far between as they were) had no suspense, no entertainment. Reading a For Dummies book on the Mafia might have been more satisfying.

There are tangents about random individuals or events in every chapter that, though seemingly important, really in the end don't make a difference one way or the other.

This book was fair at best. Has a decent amount of info from the era but really not all that easy to stay with. Fairly boring way to lay out the info. Strictly for hard core mafia enthusiasts, good amount of data, does not flow all that well . 2.5 stars
