Together Alone by Barbara Delinkky
3 woman send their children to college and they wonder how to fill their empty days.
Kay Davies will work. Celeste Prince will plan a nose job, romance and sex via an ad. Love how the women get together and figure out exactly what to write for the ad.

I'm just breezing through these novels. I LOVE 'em!!
From back cover:
"Emily, Kay, and Celeste have been best friends forever. Their daughters are close, too, but all the girls are off to college now, and the mothers must redefine themselves as women. Emily, once half of the perfect marriage, hardly knows her workaholic husband Doug anymore. What she wants so badly from him is being offered by her new neighbour, a widower with heart, soul, and grit. Kay, a dedicated teacher, still loves her job, b...more

Quick read, interesting characters.
However, there are 2 things that bother me about this book. First, Emily/Brian/Doug/Daniel seemed to be the main storylines in the book. Kay/John/Celeste/Freedom almost seemed slapped in the book to make it longer and somehow more interesting. All it did was detract from the main storylines.
Also, the "mystery" about Daniel had so much foreshadowing going on that it was too easy to figure out exactly what happened hundreds of pages before the mystery was solved...more

Another one of those books that I pick up to read whilst doing my exercise, because it's always entertaining, and yet doesn't require much thought.
Emily, Kay and Celeste have all just sent their daughters off to college. Their lives have suddenly changed, without anyone to look after anymore. Emily, realizes that she doesn't really connect with her workaholic husband, without her daughter around. Instead, she finds herself being attracted to her new neighbour. Kay, who is a school teacher, finds...more

What do you call a book that's neither chick lit, romance, or literary fiction? I'm not sure what this book was other than a good read for an airplane. It took place in the early 90s, so it was kind of annoying to read about women being suspicious of the men in their lives and not being able to contact them because they didn't have the number where they were staying (and they didn't have cell phones). A good portion of the story was also focused on kidnapping, and the type of search the police a...more
i wasn't as fond of this book as some of her others. maybe I'm just tired of the meek little perfect housewives/mothers that are doormats for their families and then are crushed when they realize how terrible their husbands really are...sigh. it took me 2 seconds to realize it and it takes them 20 years? I think I need to find a good mystery that doesn't involve any romance :) this wasn't a terrible book...it had its good things but definitely not the best book I've read
I have enjoyed some of Barbara Delinsky's latest books so I decided to delve into her early works. This book was a big disappointment. In fact, I just skimmed to the end and called it good. The women were very predictable and whiny, the men very stereotypical. The plot was obvious from the second chapter, so I didn't see any need to endure the writing to get to the end. I'll stick to the more seasoned and better developed Delinsky.
Barbara Delinsky has written a very thought provoking and emotional book with Together Alone. Although some parts were predictable, it still left you guessing enough to not be 100% sure. The story is about a little boy who was kidnapped and how that event shaped the lives of his parents and sister. The characters are very easy to get to know and they keep you thinking about them even when youre not reading. The ending was good as it gives closure to everything.
This book is yet another well-written story by Barbara Delinsky. Plenty of interesting story lines, characters who are well-defined but not perfect, good tension in the mystery part of the story, and a little romance thrown in to boot.
Very fast read, great for those times when you just want to relax and not have to work too hard, but don't want anything that moves too slow.

I am a big Barbara Delinsky reader and i have to say this is my favorite so far. She always keeps me interested and the books lead you in one direction and then a quick turn comes along and it doesn't end at all how you expected. Its always nice to read a book that you don't have figured out by the first 5 chapters. This author always captivates my attention!
I read this the month I drove both my daughters to Louisiana to go back to college after Christmas break. I think one of the reasons I enjoyed it so much is that I like to read books similar to something I am going thru in my life. However, I would have liked the book no matter when I read it. It held my interest and I liked the characters.
I liked this novel even though it reminded me less of a Jodi Picoult and mire of a soap opera. A lot of things happened to a few close families in a very small town within a short period of time. The chances of that happening in real life are slim to none. But that's one of the reasons I loved this novel. It's realistic in each individual happenstance. And still ends up in a happily ever after ending.
I didn't know what to think of this book at the beginning. The characters were older than I, having kids going off to college, whereas I have no children. However, the more I read, the more I'm drawn into the story.
I'm nearing the end, and of course have some suspicions on what I think will happen, so I cannot wait to finish it. A good simple read so far.

I decided to take a break from historical fiction and picked this up from the library. Have not formed an opinion yet.

So far - so good. Only problem is that I can see where it is going already. It could have had a little more suspense to it but -

Well it did end up where I thought it would but I enjoyed the journey anyway. It was easy to become engrossed in the characters. I could not really buy the elderly neighbor's selective senility but t was easy to become invol...more

I was born and raised in suburban Boston. My mother’s death, when I was eight, was the defining event of a childhood that was otherwise ordinary. I took piano lessons and flute lessons. I took ballroom dancing lessons. I went to summer camp through my fifteenth year (in Maine, which explains the setting of so many of my stories), then spent my sixteenth summer learning to type and to drive (two sk...more
