The Ten Best Days of My Life is set in heaven and is told through the main character, Alexandra Dorenfield (Alex). Twenty-nine-year-old Alex is sent to heaven after she gets hit by a Mini Cooper, while walking her dog (Peaches) in the early hours of the morning. When she gets to heaven she meets her late grandparents and uncle. She is assigned to a beautiful house, next to the man of her dreams (Adam), with the wardrobe of a movie star- seventh heaven. But there’s a catch, if she wants to remain...more

Anhand...more

I haven't read like a true crap chick-lit book in so long! This was not the best one to jump in with, but it could have been worse (but not by much). Girl is walking her dog and they both get killed and she goes to "7th heaven" which is like the best world you could possible imagine. Everything you want is yours. Unfortunately, a few days later, the Girl's guardian angel tells her that even though she died young, because of that, she has to prove to the powers that be, that she deserves to stay...more

Alex (that's Alexandra NOT Alexander) Dorenfield is living her normal 29 year old life when she suddenly finds herself in seventh heaven - the REAL seventh heaven. That's right, she dies. I'm not giving away any secrets here. The first line of the book is "I died today, which is so weird." Sadly, dying doesn't guarantee a stress free life, as Alex finds out. The powers that be aren't really sure Alex belongs in seventh heaven - maybe she's more suited for fourth. So Alex sets out to prove her wo...more

I love the way Alex reflect upon her life that she lived on earth in and essay ..and realizes only in the end of it all that it was a fulfilling life she lead...i think she had realized in her subconscious mind when she stated working on her how ..dressing up people.

We all do come to this point in our life..when we wait, look around and think for ourselves...is our life worthwhile, have we done any good to people around us, our parent...are we heading to right direction in our lives, what do we...more

Witty, light hearted, and thought provoking.

Alex learns about the meaning of life in the after-life when she and her dog Peaches are killed in an unfortunate late-night encounter with a mini-Cooper. They are promptly transported to 7th heaven, i.e. the highest plane. She is reunited with her beloved grandparents and great uncle Morris. She lives in her dream house. And it’s filled with all of the things that she loved on earth.

But there’s a catch. Her guardian angel explains that the powers-that...more

I did not even finish this book. The voice of the main character was driving me nuts - she used the word "like" in just about every sentence.

But what drove me nuts more than anything was the problem with her age. She said that her mother got pregnant with her in 1968, and that her mother is 33 years older than her. Yet, when she meets an old friend of her mother's in heaven, she says that her mother is 70, and she is 29. The math just doesn't work. Plus, she makes many references to living throu...more

This was a great, quick and easy read. Boy if Heaven is anything like she describes then I can really see what they mean by 7th Heaven. You end up in the house of your dreams, no cellulite!, eat whatever you want without gaining weight, never have to clean, etc. Alex is determined to stay here with her grandparents and her Uncle Morris and gets down to work on her essay. It is hilarious reading about some of the escapades she got into during life. It was also really touching to learn that she re...more

I loved this very quick, light read about an essay the heroine must write in order to get into the 7th level of heaven. The title of the book makes for good conversation. If you had to write an essay about the 10 best days of your life, what would YOU include?

A heavenly novel about what truly matters in life. In this hilarious and heartwarming first novel, twentynine- year-old Alexandra Dorenfield suddenly finds herself in heaven after an unfortunate encounter with a Mini Cooper. The seventh—and highest—level of heaven to be exact. Her dog Peaches is with her; she is reunited with her beloved grandparents; she has the wardrobe of a movie star; and she lives in the house of her dreams next door to a handsome guy. This is heaven! Have to admit, after the first pages I wanted to throw the book across the room. Eventually, I came to understand Alex especially since i worked in retail for about a decade, but what really got to me were the wonderful (and sometimes not so wonderful) people in her life who simply did the best they could. Admittedly, I cried a bit at the end when she goes back to see her parents and BFF Pen. A couple things that I didn't like l, how her mom was left alone after all that death in the end. How pe...more

This book was fun to read about the perfect heaven after death. We all would want to be on the seventh level. You'll understand what I mean if you read this book.

Loved the author's writing style and the theme of reflecting on your life.

I would have liked the story better if the main character wasn't a spoiled rich brat, but someone we could connect with better. She made some excellent points about the decisions we make in life, what real friendship is all about, valuing your relatives, etc., but her stories about being super rich took away from my ability to connect with the main character.

Still, it's a quick, entertaining read. While I disagree with th...more

Alexandra Dorenfield is dead at 29. At first, I didn’t know what to expect from this book since the protagonist dies after getting hit by a Mini Cooper while walking her dog at four in the morning. Automatically, I thought this character would be one of those girly book characters. I wasn’t that far off. I can’t say that I loved or hated this book, and it was a perfect book to read on an airplane. So after Alexandra (or Alex as she prefers) dies, she is sent to heaven with her beloved dog, Peach...more

This novel tells the story of a woman named Alex, who finds herself in heaven with her dog after they get hit by a car. At first, everything seems perfect to Alex, she's reunited with her grandparents, uncle, one of her mothers good friends, and she meets this guy who seems perfect too. She gets to her house, and discovers that it's the house that she's always dreamed of, and has everything she could possibly imagine in it. After some time in perfect bliss, she finds out that it could all be rip...more

A sweet read with a dark subject - death and the afterlife. Stepping back and taking a look at the book and the subject matter, I realized that this was a cute way to approach the subject of does your life matter and what are you doing to better the world around you. In a twisted way, I was inspired to evaluate where I spend my time, money and emotions - do they help those around me or am I wasting it all away?

Before I dive into a deep though provoking, off topic tangent - the book. A girl just...more

I really wanted to love this book. Truly. It sounded promising, delightful even. Maybe it is just me? Maybe I’m too hard to please? Yet I can’t help but think the ten best days of my life definitely don’t include those spent reading this tale.

As I mentioned, Adena Halpern’s “The Ten Best Days of my Life” sounds like an entertaining read. Promising. Charming. But it is hard to become enamoured with a storyline with a vacuous and self-absorbed lead character. I appreciate this is where the charm o...more

Alex Dorenfield could give Paris Hilton a run for her money in the shallowness department. A spoiled little rich girl, her life is all about having the best of everything and having fun no matter what the cost (like the $55,000 bill for demolishing a suite at the Plaza Hotel...just send it to Daddy). Then Alex and her dog Peaches have a run-in with a MiniCooper while taking a walk, and suddenly Alex finds herself in Heaven.

Heaven is, well, heavenly. Alex is reunited with her grandparents and be...more

Alexandra Dornfield is 29 and thinks she has her whole life ahead of her to live still and make her mark on the world. Until she suddenly finds herself in Heaven, Seventh Heaven to be exact, due to an unfortunate encounter with a Mini Cooper. Now, everything seems great, her family that has passed on too is around again, the little things about life are gone or easier now, and she is living next door to her dream guy. There is a catch to it all for Alex though. In order to stay in Seventh Heaven...more

I just finished The Ten Best Days of My Life, by Adena Halpern and I LOVED it (and I'm not just saying that either). It was the perfect book for me to read today.

Yes, we miss those who pass onto the next life (heaven, in this case). But it was nice to read about everyone in heaven having a great time and that families were together again. None of them wanted any of us left behind to worry about them. They were happy and loving it there.

I also liked how Ms. Halpern explained heaven as being diff...more

This is actually one of my favorite books I've EVER read! It's not deep and it takes a rather comical view of heaven, death and the afterlife.

The main character has a tragic meeting with a mini cooper and ends up in 7th Heaven, only to be told that her stay there isn't necessarily permanent. She needs to justify her stay their by presenting the 10 best days of her life. Even though this book is pretty light reading, it still makes you think...what are my best memories as a human being? Would I...more

It started out great and then...I lost interest. The main character dies and finds that heaven is a place where people are given anything they ever wanted: you can drive your dream car, have a closet full of designer clothes, and you can eat anything without gaining cellulite. But you have to earn it by writing an essay or risk getting demoted to a lowlier heaven where you live like a middle class person. I think the girl's family members were really not that interesting to me and her relationsh...more

I had a hard time with this book. The narrative drove me crazy. Alex is suppose to be 29, but she comes out sounding like she's 15. And a very spoiled, annoying 15 at that. I also don't think I connected with her because her idea of heaven was a closest full of designer clothes and the perfect guy next door, because in Seventh Heaven you get exactly what you dreamed of. I did like the idea of earning her right to stay in Seventh Heaven, but not much of her story made me feel like she did deserve...more

3.5 stars. Fun book. The beginning was a little rough for me, because the heroine, Alexandra, was, well, a little annoying. But – she’d just died, at 29, so I guess she had a right. The descriptions of heaven and its rules, levels, conditions, etc. were fun…loved it. I love the concept of thinking about the 10 best days of your life and how they represent you and what you value in life. What seemed like a fun, beachy read, actually ended up having some thought-provoking substance. By the end of...more

This book is a charming description of Heaven--I have been reading more of these types of books lately and this one was very positive and almost uplifting. It's nice to think that if there is some place we go after our time here on earth it could be like this. I particularly like the fact that the main character needed to justify her placement in heaven--really makes you think about your own contributions to the world.

3.5 stars. Chick lit novel about a somewhat spoiled rich girl who dies at age 29 and goes to heaven, but has to write an essay about the ten best days of her life to justify her spot in the nicest part of heaven. It was silly but fun and even moving at the end, and the main character was endearing even though initially quite shallow.

This is a really fun book - at first I was concerned, since the author was affiliated with Marie Claire and I detest that magazine, but her writing is fun and breezy, and her character is extremely likable. Not sure if it's just me, but the end of the book was a total tearjerker. I recommend this to anyone who is looking for a lighthearted, yet poignant, read!

Loved it. Loved the stories of all the elders taking care of the little princess. Reminded me of my Mom's childhood. Loved the elders stories of the old days of department stores. Loved her ability to find her best days in some of the worst things that happened to her. Great book,

Definitely of the chick-lit genre. A light read & slim paperback. Perfect for stuffing in the purse & breaking out to read on the bus or a bench in the park over lunch. Would be an interesting exercise to write an essay about the 10 best days of your life, if today was your last day on earth. What would matter if you looked back?
