My Review of The Manny by Holly Peterson
It was only a matter of time. Once The Nanny Diaries by Emma McLaughlin came out, and Bridget Jones’s Diary by Helen Fielding became popular, chick lit was in full swing. It was only natural that The Manny by Holly Peterson would be written. For those who enjoyed the shoes in Beth Harbison’s Shoe Addicts Anonymous, or designer clothes in Lauren Weisberger’s The Devil Wears Prada, one might enjoy this VERY light beach read. Although it is a somewhat...more

Jamie Whitfield is a working Park Avenue mother who has to contend with her part-time job as a producer at NBS, her three children under the age of 10, and her workaholic lawyer husband who is so concerned with keeping up with the Joneses that he is hardly ever around for his family. When her oldest child, a 9-year-old named Dylan, begins having problems with his social interactions at school and refuses to confide in her at the same time that her husband isn't around for him to talk to, Jamie d...more

I know, I shouldn't even admit I read it, but I was desperate for something light (ok, that it was) and didn't realize I was walking into the shopaholic genre so unabashedly - it doesn't even pay to talk about how bad this book was; it would be like saying, I was reading Cosmo and you know, it was really shallow .... But I was thinking, Khay, that you and I often debate the merits of lets say, Olivia Goldsmith or even Maeve Binchy, I mean they're both very different but just in that some authors...more

I haven't really been into the book until the middle, when it started to become interesting and I finally realized why it was quite important that they talked so much about Jamie's work.

The second half of the book really saved it for me, even though I wished there would have been more about Peter in the story. Loved the ending though and I'm looking forward to reading the sequel.

I wasn't expecting a great work of literature when I bought this book. I simply hoped to be entertained, perhaps enjoy a few laughs. Sadly, even these modest expectations were not met. The story isn't that funny; the plot is very predictable; the characters are stereotypical. Simply another disappointing I'm-so-rich-I'm-depressed-I'll-find-a-higher-calling-by-throwing-away-my-wealth story. It doesn't shed any new light on anything, and it's getting really boring seeing the portrayal of rich...more

yes. i actually read a book about a male nanny. but for the record, i didnt' buy it, i picked it out first because it was orange and 'manny' is what i sometimes call my cat.
i feel like this author could write something significant if she didnt write silly romantic comedies. and what's with the surge in manhatten uber rich people being SO interesting (and vile) that many books and movies lately are centered around them?
the author had a lot of subtle references about art and current events th...more

Male Nanny, Mom in a loveless marriage. Guess.

many thanks to one Emily fitter for interviewing with the publishing house and circulating the book before it hit the shelves.

bookshelves: gave-up-on
Read in August, 2007
This was one of those books that looked great online (so I reserved it at my local library), but I got barely five minutes into it and realized it's hard to follow. I like to think I'm not the only person who occasionally has trouble following the writing/thought process of some authors. I gave it probably 30 minutes, all in all, and nothing gelled, so back it goes without my even getting to the "the manny." He had yet to make an appearance.

Yeah, everything you immediately think about the book when you see the bright-orange cover and hear the title "The Manny"? It's true. I keep trying to read books about New York's glamorous elite, the Upper East-Siders, and just end up annoyed and frustrated. The main character seemed interestingly flawed at first, but her work sub-plot fizzled quickly and she got on my nerves. And the love interest was boringly perfect.

recommends it for: chicklit fans
I don't know why most chicklit centers around massively rich people in NYC or London who are trying to keep up w/the Joneses and have a workoholic, massively self-centered ego-tripping husband.

I decided to read this book b/c I am a single mom and liked the idea of hiring a Manny. If I were going to hire one, Peter would be the guy--smart, goodlooking, etc. Come to think of it, maybe I should hire a Manny after all.

This book was only marginally interesting when I first started listening to it. Once it started delving into the main character's difficulties at work, I thought it might be getting a bit better. It stalled near the middle and never picked up much from there... and then the ending just completely ruined any interest I had in the story. I hated the characters and I certainly wouldn't read another book by this author!

recommends it for: tired mothers with the attention spans of a gnat who want something completely mindless to digest
This book is a complete fluffy beach read. I did, in fact, read it while on vacation at the beach. As an often exhausted mother of two young children, I sometimes get the itch for a completely mindless, silly book and this fit the bill perfectly. It ain't fine literature, but it was what I wanted and needed and expected when I read it, which is why I gave it two stars, when it probably deserved only one.

midwestern girl who becomes upper east side wife trying to navigate the world of the rich and trivial. she hires herself a male nanny because her son needs a father figure. could be considered shameless chick-lit, but her job issues kind of ruin it as an indulgent read. probably pretty funny to people who have to deal with these kind of people on a regular basis and need some comic relief about it.

I was in the mood for some mindless chick lit and picked this one without any real reason. It was definitely mindless. The story was somewhat interesting, but cliched. I expected that. But it wasn't well-written, and the author seemed much more interested in describing the fashion and lifestyle of the Park Avenue elite in great detail than in actually developing any of the characters.

I'll admit, I'm rating this book before I've finished it. I'm hoping it will grab my attention and get more interesting if I keep with it. Unfortunately, it's hard to empathize with the main character, or her family members. They come across as spoiled, selfish whiners with too much money. I'll let you know if I finish the book and change my mind...

I enjoyed this book it was a light read for the summer. I've heard they're making this into a movie and it's a bestseller so I picked it up at Target in Texas since I had read through all the books I brought.
It was a little graphic, had some bad language, and I had to skip a few parts. So for that reason I wouldn't recommend it to everyone.

I didn't enjoy this book at all. I'm not sure why I finished it - the characters were so wooden and not fleshed out that they didn't seem like real people in any way. I guess I just don't like starting a book and not finishing it. But I wish I had never picked it up in the first place - 3 hours of my life that I will never get back.

Wow... not the best book ever. I had a hard time relating to the characters and situations in this book. Because of that I had a very hard time staying interested in it. I wouldn't recommend this one at all.

Sometimes you pick up a random book at a bookstore and it is a good choice.. other times you pick up something like The Manny.

I prayed nobody would see me in the Borders checkout line carrying this book. I wanted something idiotic to read during the summer and that's just what I got with this book. Sometimes I like to break up more serious books with crap. If you're like me, this is a pretty decent piece of crap to read.

Currently having a hard time reading the beginning. So I decided to continue with my Shopaholic series...will read after I'm done with them! Hopefully it picks up.

Finally finished...wasn't as good as I had hoped. It never really captivated me. It wasn't bad but it also wasn't that great.
