EL interés de los ensayos de esta época es bastante irregular, como lo fue toda la obra de Bataille, pero en general se lo encuentra mucho más lúcido que en los tiempos de Acéphale, y joyas como el artículo que le da nombre a esta compilación compensan cualquier cosa. En él Bataille demuestra estar influenciado por los filósofos morales franceses del siglo XVIII en la observación casi cruelmente minuciosa de sus propios movimientos internos.
