This book is the 2nd that Denise Mina wrote and picks up shortly after the conclusion of her first book, Garnethill.
Mina is a tremendous writer with an amazing ability to convey the gritty, cold scenery of Glasgow with small details. the words are a pleasure to read, but the subject matter is a bit tough...at least for a guy. these first two novels focus completely on abused women in a male dominated Scottish society, so there are very few appealing male characters. in fact the sheer despai...more

As her brother says towards the end of the book, it's near mathimatically impossible that one person would end up know 2 people murdered with a six-month period...but yet that wasn't an issue for me when reading this book. It was logical and compelling in its own way, not relying on the Garnet Hill starter of this trilogy. What I really admire about Denise Mina is her attention to both setting and character. I've never been to Scotland (but I hope to visit someday); however, even without firsthand knowledge I have to say that she creates an authentic sense of place with her writing. Not an easy task!

Totally sweet gritty Scottish mystery. Gangsters and casual self-destruction abound. The characters are hilarious, tragic and believable. The relationship between the protagonist and her brother and best friend made me miss my sisters and best friend badly. Also made me want to go back to Scotland and revel in the dirty overpasses, terrible food and unsinkable character of that country. A bit slow in parts, but so well-written, funny and real.

It's funny - you might expect that a a science fiction novel would be about the future, and that mystery novel would be about the past, but here it's reversed. The mystery of "Exile" is not "Whodunnit?" but "What will she do?" Suspense here is about not knowing what to expect, or knowing what to expect, but still being surprised by how it happens.

A great successor to Garnethill. Both of these books draw you in to life at a very real, base level. Real characters in a real place with real problems and issues. Nothing staged or polished.

Second crime novel in a trilogy, based in Glascow, Scotland. Ending makes you want to read the next one just to find out the main character will get herself into next!

A solid little page turner with an interestingly flawed protagonist, made a bit more exotic by its Glasgow setting.
