The protagonist of this 3rd novel by Kathryn Fox was one of the characters in the first novel. As the first and second were about Anya Crichton, I expected her to reappear in the 2nd or 3rd chapter of this, but finally realised that Fox had switched. I quite like that. Kate Farrar (this novel's protagonist) was mentioned in the second novel (Without Consent), and Anya was mentioned in this - both very plausibly. This book is set in the previous world of the authors other books and has many common characters, but is focused on Kate, who we met in the first book. I really liked Kate and the first time around she really went through the wringer. This time around she is trying to see if she can come back to the job that so defines her life.

I was a little disappointed at the beginning to find that Anya wasn't the main character focus of this book. As the story progressed I found I was enjoying getting behind the character of Kate more and more and it was great to see her character elaborated on, and followed-up from the previous books in the series.

SKIN AND BONE has all the elements of a good crime novel. Well-developed characters: a suitably absorbing plot with intertwining threads and enough clues to allow the reader to solve the mystery.

I'm really enjoying Kathryn Fox's books! She's a great author! I didn't enjoy this one quite as much as her other two that I've read, so didn't give it 4 stars. I just found that I couldn't warm to Kate, the character in this book, in the way I did to Anya Crichton. It still had a good story, and kept me involved - these books are the types of books that you have a really hard time putting down!
yawn. this was pretty dull, no suspense, kind of muddled writing (like it tried to point you one way, then another, but in a clumsy way and trying too hard). dull characters (did i miss a book before this? there were references to the main character's prior trauma, but nothing in detail), run of the mill mystery, tried for a twist at the end but was just kind of 'huh.' wouldn't seek out another book by this author. would have given it 1.5 if i could give half stars; i've read worse, so it was a...more
I read this because it had a blurb about being along the lines of Kathy Reichs and Patricia Cornwell, and I've enjoyed their books. This was a good suspense/mystery along those lines. I think I came in late in the series, so I didn't realize it was in Australia or what had happened to the protagonist in the past which may have taken away from my reading, but it was still a good plot on it's own.
I really enjoyed this book. I fist stumbled upon the crime thriller genre with Tess Gerritsen and since then have been looking out for other authors that stand out to me. I found this book in my local library and decided to give it a go. I thoroughly enjoyed it in the end and would definatley go on to read more by Kathryn Fox.
An enjoyable read and I hadn't worked out the twist at the end, which is always a good sign! This concentrates less on the forensics side than others of a similar genre I have read and more on the police investigation which was a welcome change.
I was passed this book by a friend, had never heard of the author but it sounded like my kind of read. Really enjoyed it, I'll look out for more by the author.
Kathryn Fox is an amazing crime writer. Her stories are set in Sydney and will keep you gripped until the end. Very hard to put the book down.
Australian detective novel set in Sydney with a forensic slant. Not the best mystery I have read but still good enough to be entertaining.
Undistinguished American crime story. A completely wrong use of the word "decimated" near the beginning set the tone.
It's rare for a book to have me guessing right up to the end but this one did so for that it deserves 5 stars.
Wont be reading anymore from Kathryn Fox. Repetitive, slow, predictable.
Thoroughly enjoyed it! Quick, good mystery.
First book I've read by this author but it won't be the last.

An enjoyable, easy holiday read for the mystery lover. The pace of the narrative is well maintained and the characters are well drawn if stereotypical. I particularly enjoyed reading of murders and arson attacks set in my local area...I'm strange that way! It felt strange to read of the characters driving down and visiting my local shops and streets that I walk through.
I borrowed this novel from the library but I will certainly purchase her other titles...doing my bit to support local writers.

It was okay. Your typical mass market mystery. There was nothing wrong with it... but it wasn't gripping.
A good little forensic mystery from a new Aussie author.
A bit of a book by numbers of a troubled female policewoman but I did enjoy it overall.
An average read but interesting enough to keep wanting to read to the end to find out who the murderer was.
This authors previous novels featured a woman forensic physician. This novel highlights a detective who previously acted as a supporting player in the earlier novels. The mystery is fairly entertaining and there is an interesting subplot involving corruption in the police department.
Kate Farrer, a minor character from Fox's previous novels, takes centre stage here. A police officer investigating a murder, arson and missing debutante that, although seems to be different cases, all ties in at the end. Good twists and turns although mostly predictable.
