This was definately a mindless read! Although, I will warn that if you have no idea about who is who in hollywood and are not at all interested in current actors and actresses, don't even attempt this book. There is so much name dropping that if you don't know who they are, you'll be lost! I had a hard time keeping up at times, myself, and I'm very into actors and actresses! One thing that REALLY REALLY irked me was that Goldberg would reference an actor or actress once, and then refer to them b More...

Celebutantes was a good read! It was unique, layed out differently to most books; it just had its own twist to it! To begin with I got confused because it just suddenly jumped in time, but that could just me and my lack of concentration at the beginning. The book made me laugh, and ponder over celebrity life, how surprising that a daughter of a director, doesn't just get all the wealth and power you'd naturally expect; she had to earn money herself and find the jobs. Although the jobs Lola had d More...

Yay trash!! Like pure trash, even worse then the stuff that comes out of the UK, as US stuff is way worse. And for some reason, stuff based in LA to me, is like the worst of the worst. Girl is part of a huge Hollywood family and for some reason she wants to make it on her own, but still use her family connections at the same time. She is into fashion and most of the book is her story in trying to get celebs to wear her friends fashions at the Oscars and most of the book takes place the week befo More...

I just finished Celebutantes the first novel from Amanda Goldberg and Ruthanna Khalighi Hopper. It was a quick, fun read, in most ways standard chick-lit, yet it was not predictable in many ways.
Lola Santisi is a Hollywood princess. Daughter of an Oscar-winning director and former supermodel, the twenty-six year old has what she calls a chronic case of CDD, Career Deficit Disorder. Hopefully that's about to change. It's the month before the Oscars and her BGF, Best Gay Forever, Julian has asked More...

Welcome to Hollyweird, where cattiness and catwalk combine. Don't be expecting any meaningful soul-finding stuff from THIS bit of chick-lit. This book is pure trash. It's superficial, shallow, and basically like eating a whole box of Krispy Kreme doughnuts in book form. The first bite is the best but it's all downhill from there; wolf them down too fast and you'll start to feel sick. This book took me several days to read because I kept having to switch off to something meaningful so I wouldn't More...

I picked this up this weekend while in Calistoga for a good pool read. It fit the bill--like if People magazine were a book. Think Nanny Diaries (which I read) meets Devil Wears Prada (which I saw) plus Entourage (which I love). It was a big disappointment, though. I wanted the inside scoop on Hollywood during Oscar week, which it delivered (written by two daughters of the Hollywood elite), but it just wasn't very good. Lots and lots of focus on clothes and shoes, which doesn't interest me at al More...

I'm not ashamed... I read crap (Sophie Kinsella, Marian Keyes, etc.) But, this book is really fun for a summer read. For anyone addicted to the tabloids, you will love this! The authors both happen to be children of very famous actors/directors so they really have a feel for Hollywood, and all the superficial stuff that goes with it. Also, they did some pretty funny trailers for this book that you can google, I could see it turning into a movie sometime soon.

This was good plane reading because the plot is well constructed. The conclusion brings together all the strands of the narrative in a satisfying way. One thing that bugged me a little is that most of humor absolutely relied on celebrity name-dropping. I enjoyed that aspect of the book (I know a lot of movie-star names), but it also seems like the authors weren't doing the full work of constructing wit out of the out of control world of Hollywood. A lot of the work of humor and atmosphere was do More...

I loved this book! It focused on the Lola, daughter to a famous director who seems to always have everything go wrong for her - especially so in "OSCAR WEEK" which is when the story is set around. The book is really funny, inspiring, and I loved how it was all based in a rich, flashy, and glamourous world of Hollywood and celebrities. It was a juicy insight that seems really accurate and makes you both love and loathe that life. It has alot of references to real celebs as well as funny stories o More...

Total trash read written by two Hollywood daughters. Told from the perspective of lost 20 something daughter of famous film Director. She tries to make her way past dating actors by socializing with her best friends an agent, a wannabee actress and a gay designer. Sofia Coppola like she is forced by her dad to take over an abandoned film role, falls in love with the sexiest male lead and then is trashed by the critics and dumped by the actor. Book tells of how she picked up the pieces. Absolutel More...

This is one of the most badly written chick lit books I have ever read...nonexistent plot, characters with no depth, constant name dropping and product placement (some sentences name 3-4 actors or designers in a row), ridiculous scenarios....it's more than OBVIOUS that the two "authors" of Celebutantes aren't writers at all. I could have cared less about the main character. I found her annoying and kept wondering "what's the point?" If this book has a plot, I completely missed it. I'm convinced More...

This was an appropriate book to read at this particular time, as it took place the week prior to the Oscars (complete coincidence by the way). It follows Lola, the daughter of a famous Hollywood director as she tries to get over her "addiction" to actors and successfully help her Best Gay Friend, Julian, get one of his dresses worn on the red carpet. Throughout the week she has to endure spoiled celebrities who refer to themselves in the third person, and resist the affections of one of her form More...

A good friend lent this to my sister who was in town, knowing that I would not be interested in reading it. What she didn't know is that my sister would forget it and I'd be meandering about my house Sunday morning looking for something decadent and brainless to do - hello Celebutards! This book is terrible - I'm serious. US Weekly in novel form with a "all the main characters get a happy ending!" kind of ending, and I should mention one of the main characters is a dress. I should also mention t More...

Zero stars, zero stars, zero stars! Three pages in and already spewing celeb and dropping designer names like they drank WAY too much at the Ocsar party then tried to run a marathon. GAG. If I hear another thing about a broken Louboutin *boo hoo* or how someone is consistently rubbing shoulders (or bodies, or other parts) with celebrities I'm going to puke myself. DON'T read it, your time will be better spent scrubbing toilets in Attica.

A fun book that covers the week before the Oscars. This book is a bit Devil Wears Prada, Sex and the City, and a toss fashionista. I'd recommend this as a beach read for the girly girl. Fun and easy and a bit self-absorbed best describes the main character in her path of self discovery. She comes from money, is a bit of a waffler in her jobs, but somehow manages to get her life together in spite or despite it all.

Clearly, from the name and cover alone, you know that this is not Pulitzer material. But I found it to be trashy fun. I agree with the reviewer who stated that it is absurd that the protagonist--and by extension, the authors--think that they are above the superficial crap. But it was an interesting look into Oscar week in Hollywood; as well as plain chick-lit fun. Mindless read? Absolutely. Waste of my time? Nah.

Lola Santisi, Daughter of famous director, is negotiating the craziness of Hollywood on Oscar Week. She is trying to get her BGF's (best gay friend)gorgeous gowns on the red carpet, while trying to her head from the clouds by the return of her actor ex-boyfriend, SMITH (sexiest man in the hemisphere). Lola seeks the help of her BFF, super agent Kate, and BAF (best actree friend) Cricket to maintain sanity during the busiest week of the year in LALA land. Will she be able to save the day? I know this isn't literary...but whatever, I don't have to think!

I read this just to have a break from life and it was actually quite good in the fact that it gave an insight to the materialism of Hollywood and the life of a socialite...interesting, but again, not great literature! It was a great breather though from all of the serious (and somewhat depressing) reading I've been going through with The Women!

Book candy at it's most shameful. I enjoyed the book, but I would in no way declare it as a must-read. I would have been happy abandoning the book half-way through if necessary--unfortunately it wasn't needed. A good choice for a beach read, but not a good choice for the intellectual set.

I happened to read this while on the plane to Los Angeles (business, unfortunately), but I did finish it up when I was on the beach in Santa Monica :-) I wouldn't recommend this as the type of thing you'd read to get you thinking about anything serious, but its a fun "summer" or beach read.

Published just in time for the Oscars this year, Celebutantes follows an up-and-coming stylist who lives in her big-time director dad's shadow. She attempts to get big name actresses to wear her friend's designer dresses to the Oscars, and exposes the Hollywood folks for the shallow, selfish bastards they are. No surprises there, but the authors provide lots of laughs along the way, and you really find yourself rooting for the good guys. The good guys include the gay fashion designer, the PR bes More...

This was a fun read. However, at the beginning, I was annoyed because of all of the name-dropping (I really think there could have been less of that). Note: This is not a good read for someone who isn't familiar with actors and celebrities, because a lot of the humor is lost if you don't know who the main character is talking about. Another source of my annoyance was the narrator (I read this as an audiobook). The valley girl intonation just wasn't right during some parts.

This felt a little self important. They were so busy pointlessly name dropping that if you were to take out all of the needless references to brad pitt, angelina, et al., then the book would be half it's size. Nothing substantial.

I picked this book up as a fun, mindless read, and while it definitely satisfied the second criteria, it fell short on the first. The plot was completely formulaic chick lit: a woman failing in love, career, and family tries to turn her life around with the help of her spunky sidekicks. Unfortunately, I just didn't care about the characters. Perhaps if the authors ghostwriter had spent a little more time evolving the characters and a little less text filling the pages with superfluous celebrity More...

Nothing but name-dropping and superficiality in this Hollywood-centric story. The characters were one-dimensional at best, the story predictable, and I felt like the authors were careful not to omit any well known celebrity from the story line. If you want to know the latest, trendiest of restaurants, clothes, actors, etc then this book has all that in it, but as far as a good read, I'd say it was moderately entertaining. I found all the materialism and celebrity-obsession more pathetic than ent More...

This book was classic, drug store chic lit. There wasn't much substance, and the plot was mediocre at best. The story lines involved celebrities, men addiction, drinking, and the Oscars.
