About a third of the way though Villette, I allowed myself to set it gently into the public library donation bin. After all, I told myself in 2008..."Life is too short to read 'bad' books!" Okay...nothing Charlotte Brontë writes is "bad". In the case of Villette, the following was applicable for me...

...An overabundance of untranslated French. Having taken several months of French in my younger (more motivated) day, I could get through it, but at the price of two g More...

I can't praise this book enough. After finishing it, I reviewed the glossary of the words Bronte had used with a view toward using them more. I'd kept a finger in the footnote section while reading Villette to see if my attempt at translating the French had been reasonably accurate. In those notes, I also found the dozens of sources for the expressions she'd used through the story. A school teacher, she was fortunate to have lived before technology took hold of our lives. That gave her time More...

I loved this book. At the beginning, I was moving along pretty slowly, but once I reached the middle the book took a completely unforeseen turn towards a Gothic mystery novel. I was so surprised, but I still loved it.

I've never been an avid fan of any bronte, but this was by far the least irritating to read. It was well written, albeit unnecessarily verbose. The major issue I had with the novel was the overwhelming sense of nothingness. Essentially, nothing happened. I'm not entirely sure writing eloquently can make up for the eradication of a storyline.

This is one of my all time favourite books. The book I would take to my desert island... It is semi autobiographical and absolutely heart wrenching in its portrayal of uncertainty, unrequited love, requited love, longing and passion. An utterly wonderful read !!

I was disappointed in this book by Charlotte Bronte. I have enjoyed her other books. I do not know French; perhaps if I had some knowledge of French I would have found it more enjoyable. There was too much in it that I could not understand.

This book was terrible. It was very confusing and boring. Though I have this thing were sometimes... I feel I just have to finish the book. But it was not worthy it. uck, and after writing something as good as Jane Eyre.

It was good but I read it after Jane Eyre and it was like the ugly stepsister trying to fit into the glass slippers. It was a similar story but just didn't hit home.
