Well, so far this book makes me want to die while vomiting. Patently unoriginal and laden with cliches, this book is about a romance between 2 people in their thirties who have the emotional development of teenagers. The characters' thoughts and behaviors are trite, predictable & almost always stereotypical. This book is a Harlequin romance packaged as literature, except not as good.

Ok, usually I really like Sparks - his books are enjoyable, quick reads that don't take too many brain cells and sometimes give you a few warm fuzzies.

Now, I didn't put this together with "True Believer" until I started to write this review, so I was pissed throughout the entire book because there was NO detail about how they fell in love, so it was completely unbelievable - it sounded like Jeremy was constantly trying to talk himself into believing he was in love.

After reading many Nicholas Sparks books, I thought that he lost his magic. I no longer cried for any of his books and my rating lessened to 3-4 stars. So, when I first saw this book, it had 'boredom' written all over it. But little did I know that this book was that "tear-trigger" of a book!! The guy is wicked! He made me cry. Uncontrollably! I mean how could he do this!? I thought this book was gonna end with a happy note just like True Believer (its first part!). But here I'm crying...more

I picked this up on a whim at the airport, on my way to see clients in Texas. Up until then the only Sparks book I'd read was Nights in Rodanthe. I think I'd received it as a selection of the month once when I forgot to return the slip. Though I found the character descriptions to be a bit over the top, fantastical as it may have been I did enjoy the story. So much so, that a couple of weeks later I was travling again and I picked up True Believer.

Sparks continues what he started in True Believer, not only with the story line but the wonderful twists. This is an author who is growing on me. Just when you think his story line is going to go down obvious paths he twists it around on you.

However, they are forced to overcome challenges, including Jeremy’s best friend Alvin trying to break them apart and Jeremy’s persistent writer’s block. Their story makes you want to throw up at times from their cheesy love, but at other times the emotions it makes you experience are intense and moving. This book conveys the fact that everything goes away in the end, which is why enjoying every moment is so imperative.
Jeremy and Lexie’s main conflict is their struggle against the opinions of the people surrounding them. They fight to find a way in which their love will be accepted, no matter how unconventional it is to be getting married after only knowing each other for about a month. But Lexie and Jeremy stick together and persevere in able to have the result of their love being even stronger than before because of the burdens that they have been able to overcome together.
The theme of this novel as I perceived it is love is never perfect and can be cruel, but it is the greatest thing that a person can experience. Through this theme I was able to realize that every moment should be treasured because it is never evident what will happen, no matter how perfect everything can seem. Sparks was able to beautifully portray this theme through the heart wrenching tale of Jeremy and Lexie’s love and lives with each other. They are able to appreciate their love and recognize it as a blessing, and therefore are happy with one another. One of the central motifs of this novel was the concept of trust and faith. It asks the questions, why do people believe in things without evidence, and how is it truly possible to wholeheartedly trust another person? People are able to base facts on solely instinctual events that don’t have any scientific basis because they know in their hearts that it is true, and most of the time they are right. This motif is conveyed in the concept of love at first sight, and how you can tell it is truly love that you are feeling, and through a variety of other events.
Nicholas Sparks has a very romantic and effortless writing style. He writes in the same way people would talk if they were having a conversation, but is still able to be very descriptive and portray emotions very well. It is easy to relate to his characters because of the laid back way he writes. In this novel his writing was somewhat repetitive in the beginning, making it a slower start to the novel, but the end was moving and compelling. Overall I would recommend this book to anyone who likes a good love story and enjoys books that make them cry because this book did. It was a good book about the lessons of life and love.

Overall, I thought At First Sight by Nicholas Sparks was okay. It wasn’t very exciting until the end of the book. I absolutely hated the ending because I was expecting a happily ever after like most romantic novels. The sad ending is not what you would expect in a story like this.
I don’t really like the style that Nicholas Sparks wrote the book in. I wish he had written it from Jeremy’s point of view because then I would’ve been able to understand what was going through his mind throughout the story easier. For example, at the end when Lexie was at the hospital having the baby, I think I could’ve better understood how Jeremy felt if he was telling the story. What I did like about the book was how descriptive the author wrote it. It made it easier to understand what was going on.
I think the point or theme of the book was that you won’t always get what you want and sometimes things you would have never expected can happen at any time. In the beginning of the book, I really liked how Jeremy’s friend Alvin talks to Jeremy about finding your soul mate. He says that you have to agree with each other on most of your decisions, and if you do, then you can get married.
Even though this wasn’t one of my favorite books that I have read, I would recommend this book to anyone who has a heart. Someone who is good at figuring out what will happen in the story when they read would probably be able to understand this book. It is easy to understand what is going on throughout the story. This book is similar to a lot of other romantic novels, so if you are interested in that kind of literature, you might like this book.

After fighting for what seemed like weeks, Jermey decided to go back to New York for his bachelor party. His friend Alvin was acting strange and soon enough Jermey realized Alvin was the one sending the emails. Jermey imediatly went back to Boone Creek and apoligized to Lexie and told her everything. After that, their relationship was smooth sailing from there. Nothing else went wrong before their wedding, but after their wedding their lives took a complete 180. Their first ultra sound and they are excited, but when the technician finds something wrong, she calls in the Doctor. Turns out the amniotic band is floating around the baby and could attach, causing the baby to have ABS. Also known as Amniotic Band Syndrome. This could affect the baby in many ways. If the band attached to one of the baby's limbs the baby could be born with out a limb, webbed fingers or toes or a disfunctional limb. What could Jermey and Lexie do now? Nothing. They can't do anything to fix it all they can do is wait and see if it attaches. A week before Lexie goes into labor the band still hasn't attached. Will everything turn out ok? If you like drama and sort of lovey dovey books this is a book you might want to consider reading. (less)

I had a hard time with this book. The whole time I was reading I thought it was stupid and lacked chemistry between the main characters - which is obviously crucial in a love story. Jeremy and Lexie get pregnant and decide they want to spend their lives together. They buy a house and begin renovations, planning on moving in right before the baby is born. They get married during the pregnancy, and look forward to meeting their little girl until one day during a routine ultra-sound the Technician finds something wrong with the baby. When the doctor was called in, they found out the baby might be born with Amniotic Band Syndrome, a disorder that can cause severe mutilation to the baby and can end fatally. The rest of the pregnancy is filled with stress and worry for Lexie and Jeremy as they are hoping that the amniotic band does not attach to their baby. To their relief, the baby is born healthy and the band did not end up attaching or affecting the baby in a negative way. Just as the new parents are excited and relived about the birth of their new, healthy daughter Claire, Lexie unexpectedly takes a quick gasp and passes out. The doctors immediately ten d to her to see what just happened, but it’s too late. She died in childbirth because some fluid escaped her uterus and traveled into her lungs. The doctors are unable to do anything to save her. As Jeremy and Lexie’s Grandma, Doris, are shocked at the news that their perfectly healthy and young wife and granddaughter has suddenly passed away, they are conflicted with many emotions and fears. Doris had raised Lexie and can’t grasp the fact that her granddaughter passed away just like that. Jeremy is confronted with feelings of anger and hatred towards the baby. To him, she is the one who murdered his wife and caused her death. If the baby hadn’t been born, Lexie wouldn’t have gone through childbirth and none of this would have happened. With the help of Doris putting things in perspective and telling Jeremy that Lexie would have wanted him to care for their young child, he gets up enough courage to go and see his new daughter. Although he originally did not even want to see her, when he lays his eyes on her he falls in love, and knows he never wants to lose her. With Claire by his side, Jeremy is able to keep living life; loving his daughter and remembering Lexie every day.
I really enjoyed this book. I found it to have a good balance of romance, suspense and drama. Although the ending was sad, it had a really sweet twist with Jeremy and Claire talking about Lexie. The book held my interest, and had a very good story line. I enjoy Nicholas Sparks’ writing because he is very creative and always has a very good romantic element without taking it out of hand. This book was very good because it showed situations that really happen, and how real people can always get through them.
I would suggest this book to anyone who enjoys a good romance novel with a twist. It holds one’s interests and makes for a good, enjoyable read. It’s not a hard read, but still mature and interesting.

‘At First Sight’ is about a famous writer, Jeremy; who comes down from New York City to Boone Creek. At first, Jeremy visits this small and mysterious town for an investigation and then he meets Lexie. Lexie is a librarian who was born and brought up in Boone Creek. So, she always had the first hand information about everything and anything happening in this small town. Jeremy takes her help in every step of his investigation. As days gone by, Lexie and Jeremy become very close and they get engaged.

Things go smooth till Jeremy starts receiving weird mails from an unknown, which were meant to mess up the budding relationship between Jeremy and Lexie. Jeremy, who was already apprehensive to start a new life after a divorce, who is yet to accept the fact that soon he is going to be a parent, who loved New York City but convinced himself for a promising life with Lexie, who couldn’t concentrate on writing after moving to Boone Creek and which was everything to him; had to believe in the trust of his relationship with Lexie.

Will Jeremy be able to continue his writing career, without which he can’t earn a single penny? Will he be able to find the truth about his relationship with Lexie, which was buried under the lies? Will he be able to stay in the Boone Creek leaving all his luxuries behind? (Like he had to drive 100 miles just to watch a movie) Read At First Sight to know more about this enthralling yet a tragic story.

Best things which I noted about this book would be; Nicholas Spark’s books are usually predictable but this book is very distinct from others as it has many twists and mysterious loops throughout the story. Also, the flow of the story is very smooth and appealing which won’t let the readers put down the book. This book conveys a message; “Long-lasted relationships are built upon the foundation called trust.”

I would like to suggest this book to all the readers who would like to; lie on their backs reading a pleasant book and enjoy every piece of it. And of course to all the Nicholas Spark’s fans; if you haven’t read the book, bet you have to hit the book-store today to have your own copy.

I’m going to post the rest of this review with spoilers, so don’t read if you don’t want to know what happens or if you haven’t read the 1st book since it spoiles what happens originally.

Now from the 1st book “True Believer” we knew that Jeremy and Lexie were pregnant and going to have a little girl. I was really happy with how the 1st book ended, but it did leave at that cliffhanger, so I was really happy to see where things ended up with them. And knowing how Nicholas writes, I knew something tragic was going to happen.

It was really good seeing everything that led up to the wedding and seeing how everyone played a part. Plus, I hated how Jeremy and Lexie were arguing about things. But the big shock for me was how Jeremy’s friend Alvin from the 1st book totally backstabbed him and made Jeremy think he wasn’t the father of the baby only because he didn’t know Lexie that long. I totally didn’t see that coming. Then the storyline about baby Claire and her possible birth defects was sad and I was worried that was the bad thing that was going to happen.

I totally didn’t think Lexie was going to die during childbirth. OMG that was SO sad and I started balling. From reading the prologue, and Nicholas’ other books & films, I knew something bad was going to happen, but I really didn’t want it to be that. It was just SO sad and I felt bad for both Jeremy and Claire. Plus, Claire was going to experience what Lexie went through being a orphan and raised by her grandmother. At least Jeremy and Claire had each other.

But even with that, the ending worked perfectly with Jeremy taking 4-year-old Claire to see the lights at the cemetery, which we knew from the 1st book weren’t ghosts but lights from a train. But it brought everything full circle since Claire was having the same nightmares her mother Lexie had as a child about her parents dying. So little Claire said she got to meet her mother, just like Lexie said she met her parents that way!!!

I just LOVE these books so much, even if they end so tragically. I guess it just shows how girly I am. LOL But I totally recommend this book and all of Nicholas Sparks’ novels!!! He is just a FANTASIC writer!!!

This book is about Jeremy Marsh and a very painful memory of his. His memory is talked thru out the book. His memory is about how he met Lexie, the love of his life. After breaking the Notre Dame school record as part of a relay team in 1985 as a freshman (a record which still stands), he was injured and spent the summer recovering. During that summer, he wrote his first novel, though it was never published. He majored in Business Finance and graduated with high honors in 1988.

He and his wife Catherine, who met on spring break in 1988, were married in July, 1989. While living in Sacramento, he wrote his second novel that same year, though again, it wasn't published. He worked a variety of jobs over the next three years, including real estate appraisal, waiting tables, selling dental products by phone, and started his own small manufacturing business which struggled from the beginning. In 1990, he collaborated on a book with Billy Mills, the Olympic Gold Medalist and it was published by Feather Publishing before later being picked up by Random House. (It was recently re-issued by Hay House Books.) Though it received scant publicity, sales topped 50,000 copies in the first year of release.

He began selling pharmaceuticals and moved from Sacramento, California to North Carolina in 1992. In 1994, at the age of 28, he wrote The Notebook over a period of six months. In October, 1995, rights to The Notebook were sold to Warner Books. It was published in October, 1996, and he followed that with Message in a Bottle (1998), A Walk to Remember (1999), The Rescue (2000), A Bend in the Road (2001), and Nights in Rodanthe (2002), The Guardian (2003), The Wedding (2003), Three Weeks with my Brother (2004), True Believer (2005) and At First Sight (2005) all with Warner Books. All were domestic and international best sellers and were translated into more than 35 languages. The movie version of Message in a Bottle was released in 1999, A Walk to Remember was released in 2002, and The Notebook was released in 2004. The average domestic box office gross per film was $56 million -- with another $100 million in DVD sales -- making the novels by Nicholas Sparks one of the most successful franchises in Hollywood.

The film rights to Nights in Rodanthe, True Believer and At First Sight have been sold, and Nicholas Sparks has written the screenplay for The Guardian, though he has not offered it for sale at this point.

He now has five children: Miles, Ryan, Landon, Lexie, and Savannah. He lives in North Carolina with his wife and children.

His ancestry is German, Czech, English, and Irish, he's 5'10" and weighs 180 lbs. He is an avid athlete who runs daily, lifts weights regularly, and competes in Tae Kwon Do. He attends church regularly and reads approximately 125 books a year. He contributes to a variety of local and national charities, and is a major contributor to the Creative Writing Program (MFA) at the University of Notre Dame, where he provides scholarships, internships, and a fellowship annually.(less)
