Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease: The Revolutionary, Scientifically Proven, Nutrition-Based Cure
A powerful call for a paradigm shift in heart disease therapy.
Based on the groundbreaking results of a twenty-year nutritional study by Dr. Esselstyn, a preeminent researcher and clinician, this book illustrates that a plant-based, oil-free diet can not only prevent and stop the progression of heart disease but can also reverse its effects. Written by "a former surgeon, researcher and clinician at the Cleveland Clinic" this book is a must read for anyone who has a history of heart disease or who's family history puts them at risk of heart disease.
The first half of the book is what is important - it comprises the full discussion of the issue with a straightforward presentation of the evidence and what you need to do to avoid the onset of heart disease and for those with a history, to arrest it and in some cas...more

Rip Esselstyn in The Engine 2 Diet and Forks Over Knives
First off, I'm not sure why I didn't read this book sooner. Second off, there is no questioning why Clinton was impacted by this book. Third off, read this book (though I would start with The China Study) even if you don't know a single person with heart disease or affected by it (which is highly unlikely) because it will impact you.
Like Campbell, Esselstyn has a way of writing scientifically but putting it in layman's terms. He even makes it fun. I couldn't put it down and finished it...more

In November I travelled to Georgia to visit my daughter. While there we had dinner with one of Morgan’s friends and her mom. During dinner this lovely, lean woman described the “diet” she had been following for the past 6 months. She described it as “the Bill Clinton diet” and said she had learned about it from a book written by a doctor named Esselstyn. She described the plan, in a nutshell, as no meat (nothing with a face, nothing with a mother), no dairy, and no oil – not even “healthy” o...more
I would highly recommend this book if Dr. Esselstyn's thesis was that a whole foods, plant based diet is an effective lifestyle change because it tempers the human condition against overconsumption of the fats and sugars that are present in today's environment. He offers great information educating the reader how to achieve this diet. I for one am a proponent of this way of eating. Unfortunately, Dr. Esselstyn error is that he reaches too far in his hypothesis of what this diet can achieve. ...more
I purchased this book after watching Dr. Sanjay Gupta's special on CNN entitled "The Last Heart Attack." Dr. Esselstyn, although not a cardiologist, has been doing research regarding plant based diets and the prevention, arrestment, and in some cases reversal of heart disease. He has stories of some of his patients who had had heart attacks, and either were not candidates for surgical intervention or chose to try his diet instead. All of his patients, after only a few weeks on his plan...more
Interesting explanations about heart disease and diet.
The good news: a low-fat, vegan whole grain and plant based diet will lower one's cholesterol and either remove or diminish one's risk for heart disease put themselves at risk for due to eating a diet rich in animal food (depending on how long that person has been eating badly!), and actually a number of diseases and conditions that most Americans are at high risk for - such as several cancers, diabetes, obesity, dementia, stroke.

This ball got rolling when I saw "The Last Heart Attack" on CNN. My dad had just had heart surgery, so I was looking for something to help him, and to help me to avoid the same outcome. When I watched the CNN special and saw the amazing things a plant-based diet was doing for President Clinton, and the others that were highlighted, I knew I had to do some more research. I looked up Dr. Esselstyn's book, and immediately downloaded it to my Kindle. The electronic pages blurred by as ...more
Esselstyn is candid about his extraordinary approach to heart health requiring extreme commitment. Changing eating habits formed over a life-time is certainly a radical approach, but the research findings described in the book are compelling.
The author is a bit repetitive as he tells the stories of many of the individual subjects of his studies, but each one presents another reason to adopt a plant-based, oil-free diet in order to prevent or reverse heart disease. I found that skim...more

This book has life saving information. I would put it in my top 3 most influential books. A must read for every American. I love the recipes in the back which are all perfectly combined to keep you heart attack proof!
Premise: Heart disease can be prevented and reversed with strict adherence to a NO fat diet.
-Don't eat anything that has a mother or a face.
-No oils, no dairy products, no nuts
Eat fruit, vegetables, beans, lentils, whole grains

3/4 of the world doesn't have heart disease.
Get cholesterol below 150. 150mg/dL is the number; used to be 250, then 200, no 150

Well this gives you food for thought, and for little else, since it appears that just about everything we eat is going to kill us through heart disease, cancer or certainly something else! However, I expect he is quite right. Our western diet is incredibly bad, and if I knew I had heart disease I think I take his advice and abandon all thought of eating meat, fish, eggs, dairy products and fat straight away. However, living with a confirmed carnivore surrounded by more of them, it's a trifle dif...more
Fascinating book about stopping and/or reversing your heart disease. If you want to be heart attack proof, or if you find yourself in heart-trouble, this is the book to read.
Dr.Esselstyn was a surgeon at the Cleveland clinic for 35 years and eventually saw angioplasty, bi-passes, and all other invasive techniques as a bandaid to symptoms of a serious disease rather than a cure. Essy repeats himself rather a lot, but that certainly makes the message clear. I also like that the chapters are short and focused, so that the reader doesn't feel overwhelmed by the info, and if you want to return to a topic for reference or review, it's easy to find what you're looking for, because the chapter titles can be pretty precisely representative of their focused content. I borrowed this from the library and will definitely be picking up a used copy.

This book can be revolutionizing in it's approach to health. I loved a quote that said, "Why is changing someone's diet so radical when cutting someone open is considered conservative?" So true. Why not more stars. The book was repetitive. Could have been better edited. I still enjoyed it though. I am not ready to go vegan, but I already live some of the guidelines. No dairy in our diet because of my son's food allergy. I hate the taste of read meat, but chicken and eggs would be hard ...more
I have heard about this this book on several news programs and finally picked it up. I read this book because I am interested in lower my chances of heart disease. This was a really good informative book with a ton of recipes that sound really good. I plan on making a few. I will admit that going vegan is something that will be really hard for me to do. I am going to try being vegan a couple of days a week. I love vegs and fruit so that's not the problem. The problem is giving up meat, dairy, an...more
Dr. Esselstyn gives a lot of information about his group of 23 cardiac patients who had no more hope with the surgical medical community who came to him for his nutrition program which advocates NO fat--not even the so-called "healthy fats"- olive or canola oils, NO animal products, and lots of vegetables, some fruits, and lots of whole grains on a daily basis. The book includes about 150 pages of recipes starting with breakfast and moving on through the day. The ones we have tried ...more
I've had this book on my "to read" list ever since seeing Forks Over Knives. I'm glad I finally got around to reading it. Very interesting, especially where oils are concerned. The science behind this way of eating, combined with the atrocities of factory farming are definite motivation to change. This isn't a detailed technical study, but rather a summary of findings and a recommendation on diet, so don't expect a science-heavy read - there are other books where you can find that.
He brings up many good points regarding diet - however there are other populations that ingest much in the way of "heart healthy" fats/oils ( Greeks, Italians - EVOO, Polynesians - coconut oil) and they have VERY little heart disease - so not sure we can attribute heart disease to ingestion of healthy fats -
Also ? study size which was very low - would love to see larger group of persons in this type of study - however diet is extremely restrictive -

I also read this book for exhibition. This book is about how doctors attempt to treat heart disease without using drug and simply changing the patient's diet. It also includes recipes inside to tell what patience can eat so they know what they can eat instead of what they cannot eat.
I think this book is helpful. However, I wouldn't read these book for leisure because heart disease is not something that I worry about.

he provides a lot information regarding our life style. I was surprised by some facts like the olive oil or yogurth. Those products are on his not allowed food list. I thought that eating olive oil was good.
Like he said and like everyone know, making change in your life is not easy, but I will try step by step to adopt his idea, because If i can avoid surgery and having a better life, this effort is worthy.

This book makes a good companion piece to The China Study. Dr. Esselstyn recommends a plant-based, oil-free diet to prevent and reverse heart disease, based on solid research. His wife compiled a lot of recipes to get you started. Read this book for the recipes and heart disease-specific information and The China Study for a more comprehensive guide (chapters on all the major American diseases).
It's not like it's great literature, but he is passionate and emphatic to say the least. I am persuaded, though the thought of not even being able to consume oils is, I confess, daunting. Living without meat? Started that 12 years ago. Living without dairy? Sure, not a big deal, really. But not even oil? Yipes.
I'm going to do some more reading on the subject.

Very interesting and hopeful information on using nutrition and diet to eitehr prevent or reverse the plague of cardiovascular problems that haunt the people of this country, which, according to Dr. Esselstyn is caused by bad diets and poor nutrition, that is an excess of meat and other animal products, and too much fat. I'm working on it.
I read it in hopes of gaining some knowledge that will help me down the road. Now I am scared. The book pretty much goes through the science of how meat, dairy and oils ruin your body. So I am more scared then ever! It was slightly repetitive, but it made me realize I have some choices to make down the road in order to live longer.
I liked this book enough that after the library version I bought my own copy and am encouraging everyone I care about to read it along with Forks Over Knives by Colin Cambbell. These two men are changing the way America eats and I predict they will also change the way medicine is practiced.
Anyone who has heart disease or knows someone with heart diseease NEEDS to read this book! It is so informative and empowering. I especially enjoyed reading the case studies of people who have completely turned their health around using a fork. I have also tried many of the recipes included in the book with great success
It's not enough

if you are a victim
of heart disease
according to this author
there is no such thing
as heart healthy fats and oils
I buy it because my weight
has not dropped dramatically
and I need to take the next step

I got this after hearing him speak at Healthy Dublin. For someone with heart disease in my family and personally have high chloesterol/borderline type 2 diabetic this book is great. I am trying to follow the principles and make lifestyle changes .........easy book to read
What a wonderful book! Dr. Esselstyn has proven, beyond any doubt, that changing to a healthy lifestyle will stop and even reverse heart disease. This is extremely important, because heart disease kills at least half of all people in the country.
somebody lent me this book hoping it would help with my current GI condition, but not really. it conflicts a lot with my doctor's dietary recommendations.
some recipes look nice, anyway.
also, fear of death is not going to make me give up sushi.

“Here are the facts. Coronary artery disease is the leading killer of men and women in Western civilization. In the United States alone, more than half a million people die of it every single year. Three times that number suffer known heart attacks. And approximately three million more have “silent” heart attacks, experiencing minimal symptoms and having no idea, until well after the damage is done, that they are in mortal danger. In the course of a lifetime, one out of every two American men and one out of every three American women will have some form of the disease.”
