There was a LOT of information in this book. If you want a detailed history about the Middle East and mistakes that America has made this book does a very through job.

Honestly I think I could have read the introduction and the last three chapters and that would have been good enough to get the idea. For a while it read like those chapters in the Bible about who begat whom (only with terrorists). Som

Finished Devil's game. Boy was that a long read. The book was rambly,
he overstated his case, and it retreads some of the familiar
territory, like the Taliban's cooperation with the US and Unocal's
ideas of building a gas pipeline to the Indian ocean through
Afghanistan. They were hoping to create another Saudi Arabia out of
Afghanistan (Although, that arsehole in Nebraska who created a
"Taliban primer" to teach kids to count using dead Russian soldiers
and kalashnikov rifles deserves a special place i

Just finished reading Robert Dreyfuss' Devil's Game: How the United States Helped Unleash Fundamentalist Islam (New York: Metropolitan Books, 2005). Dreyfuss originally interviewed by Jon Stewart on the Daily Show intrigued me. Dreyfuss' book outlines in incredible detail how Great Britain and the United States aided the development of political Islam or Islamism. Beginning in the 19th-century and leading up to the present day Dreyfuss details how Anglo-American interests used political and econ ...more

A book with a wealth of information... An eye opener and inspiring book... The book revolves around one essential idea - how US and Political Islam interests were aligned during the Cold War against communism and how the U.S. helped to build the Islamic extremism of today....A very long read.....There are 300 of the 400 pages that are redundant and could have been removed with no impact to the reader

This is a history of a cold war strategy that backfired on us. We have supported Islamic fundamentalists against secularists and nationalists in Middle Eastern countries because we considered Islamists to be more reliable partners against communism. A well-known example is the help we gave to the Taliban to kick the Soviets out of Afghanistan. Ignored at the time was the future consequences of this strategy such as the spread of Islamic fundamentalism that is troubling us today.

it's a fascinating book. it's all about the consipracy theroy regarding the Amercian Empire.
on the other side, it could be shocking for most of the readers new to this subject.
it providesmany answers to the current situation for what so-called "arab spring".

Very insightful, very depressing. Fundamentalism in Islam is entwined with colonialism, fostered by the British as a means of separating people within the empire.
