The author describes the events so vividly that I was even scared at some points :) Also he/she kept me absorbed in the book as I was always curious about the things to happen next. Overall, the book was good but it is my not my favorite.

I gave up on the title fool. I thought that this is the same "Sleepy Hollow", under which filmed the movie with Johnny Depp, and regret I had to take a minute to check whether it is indeed. It turned out that due to anything besides the two "riders" can not be combined with each other.
Light, a bit funny story with the criminal vein. What do mustangs hunter from Ireland, the beautiful Miss Luisa and the old trapper? Why the mysterious headless horseman is so difficult to catch?

good for young adults, some adventure, some detective story...poor description of characters.
I am really happy, that I finally have read this book. And I loved it so much, I finished it in a few days.
This book returned me to my childhood and reminded me what a big fan of wild adventures I was.
I enjoyed reading about old Texas times. Actually I was a little bit jealous, that people used to live this way. They could live in forests and woods, hunt, drink from rivers, live with nature in peace and didn't really need much. I think it's obvious that the main and good characters of this book...more
Man vienmēr licies, ka šī būs padrūma grāmata par tumšajiem viduslaikiem, jo anotācijai biju tikai pavirši uzmetis aci. Nekā nebija. Stāsts risinās saulainajā Teksasā tās sulīgajās prērijās un notikumus diktē karstais meksikāņu temperments.
Pretēji iepriekš lasītajām klasikas grāmatām biju patīkami vīlies, kas negadās bieži.
Nav nekāds spraigais sižets, intriga tiek kāpināta lēni. Tomēr, ja neskaita detalizēti aprakstīto notikumu sīkumus, romāns bija paredzams. Faktiski intriga bija līdz brīdim, k...more
This is the first book by Mayne Reid that i read. And i'm sorry to say, it's most likely the last one.
I really, really wanted to like the book and his style of writing.
And while the first proved to get better towards the end, his writing however, is not my taste.
The constant "toying" with the reader "Who was this rider? He was wearing this and that (previously described on a character), went there, did this, oh who could it ever be?" " It was, indeed *insert name* "
Like, i'm not that stupid, i ca...more

I read this book about 35 years ago. Yes, it was one of those books that was considered a classic and great reading material in Soviet Union. Every kid must have read it and I was not an exception. While being a timid and not a very tough kid at the time, I took a deep dive into the land of cowboys and Indians, mustangs, wild horses and fighting. Love, of course what boy doesn't want to be cool, tough and in love with a beautiful woman or be loved. That is as much as I can remember, since it was...more

Особой художественн...more
I liked that although all sounded so mystic, the solution was pretty exciting and natural. It was first and so far only western-criminal book I have read.
Very interesting and fascinating book. The novel's plot is a detective story. The headless horseman appears as a nonsense to a reader. Neither the characters nor the narrator know who is it. A mystery is around this typical setting of Texas. The narrator talks to his reader through the main character Maurice Gerald. The book becomes even more entertaining when romance between the main characters occurs. The ending is culmination of everybody's guesses which composes complete picture of a puzzle...more

The book in general is good, but the pacing was a bit slow and because of that i got tired after reading 10 pages at a time. The actions of the characters were very obvious. Also i think there was no grey zone in the book. By this i mean the characters were either good or bad. Because I read the book in Mongolian the language was sort of awkward too. The translation was bad. Planning to get a copy in English, maybe then my impression about this book will change.
I have no idea why I read this book so late - it's brilliant! Full of adventure, love, hatred, jealousy, mystery and the descriptions of nature are so beautiful and detailed, gosh! I guess i would've been even MORE fascinated if I read it at the teen age. Anyways, HIGHLY recommended :) I loved it.

The Mayne Reid writing style is unique, a bit unusual but i loved it as well.
Great story - a classic, the tale that every child grows (or, in my humble opinion, should) up reading. Romance and mystery spun into one make it a wonderful read - and although by the end the answer to "whodunnit?" becomes rather obvious, the action and intrigue are wonderful.
"That's for kids, too simple and naive" - my friends said. Have to agree now. Though I still consider it reveals enough bits of American culture of that time in between the lines to be interesting.

"Captain" Reid wrote many adventure novels akin to those written by Frederick Marryat and Robert Louis Stevenson. He was a great admirer of Lord Byron. These novels contain action that takes place primarily in untamed settings: the American West, Mexico, South Africa, the Himalayas, and Jamaica.
