i am 8-bit: Art Inspired by Classic Videogames of the '80s
Pac-Man. Frogger. Super Mario Bros. Nostalgia is a powerful thing. Who doesn’t love a tiny reminder of their youth to deliver a welcome wave of fuzzy gut warmth? The ever increasing popularity of all things deemed old school speaks volumes to that notion. It’s possible an image of Mario riding a GT Pro Performer with Optimus Prime on the pegs could cause a grown man to knee buckle tumble into a teary mess. I don't really know much about art but I do know a ton about video games. I thought that a lot of the artwork in this book was engaging as a gamer. It's nice to see people inspired by video games do something productive with their love of it as it is a fairly solitary activity. My favorite piece was the one of Hunter S. Thompson holding the Nintendo Zapper.
I can't entirely say that I've read this book cover to cover, but from leafing through it once at Books-a-Million, I became totally turned off by it. I don't like any of the images. I guess if you are into repulsive and offensive art, this book is for you, but definently not for me.
